I've wondered and maybe someone can tell me, instead of built into programs why not have an ad-drainer? When you block the ad you tip off the source that you are blocking, but instead just read the ad stream and discard it instead of displaying it. The source will not know. Seems easy so am I missing something?

Have you seen ads for these on your phone where they claim to estimate you based on how well you do? They seem to imply that if your brain age is high/old then you are feeble and if it is low/young then you are sharp/smart.

What is IQ? Intelligence quotient. Mental age / physical age. The higher your mental age the higher your .

It seems like they have it backwards. An older brain is smarter.

Putin insisted today that the residents of four Ukrainian regions that Moscow illegally annexed a year ago “made their choice—to be with their Fatherland”.

The address was released in the early hours to mark the first anniversary of the annexation of the Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions following the concert that was held in Red Square yesterday.

Looks like is limiting its booster program (when it’s ready) to over 50s? I don’t get it. Surely the goal should be to limit spread as much as possible and it’s not only over 50s who are spreading this airborne virus… or suffering from long Covid.

(Interesting footnote about speaking to your GP if you’re not eligible. I wonder if you can get it via referral even if you’re under 50 or something.)

Everyone is vulnerable to catch COVID and when they do they spread it.

The vaccine doesn't prevent you from catching COVID, it lowers your odds of dying if you do, and mostly it's older people who die from it.

So vaccinating everyone doesn't lower the spread of the disease, just the death toll.

Ah yes, this is a great way to turn “Can I see your driver’s license?” into “Can you hand me your unlocked phone so I can rifle through it?” at a traffic stop.

Yes, it’s more convenient than having a separate card, and it may serve as a great backup in case your physical card is lost or damaged. But please don’t use this as your only driver’s license, especially if you are an often-targeted demographic.

Several schools in Arkansas are defiantly teaching AP African American history. The state has warned them that the students will earn no credits.

Republicans continue to describe Black history as "indoctrination" and "teaching children to hate America" -- showing that they might benefit from the course themselves.

“Demand drives up price” is such a ridiculous and hostile concept really (and also a lie), but we so often take it as some sort of universal truth.

An economy that serves the people would recognize high demand as an imperative to lower cost, and increase access, not as a chance to extract profit.

Demand doesn’t drive up prices, greed does.

Don't talk about illegal things (abortion in certain places, DIY HRT, etc) on facebook messenger. Don't do it on whatsapp or via SMS or Instagram DMs or Twitter or Mastodon or Discord or whatever.

Use signal. Use a PIN on signal. Turn on auto-destruction of messages. If your data is not fully end-to-end encrypted, that data can and will be handed over to police and it will be used to prosecute you.

As thankful as I am to the Fosstodon admins for hosting this instance, any time there's an outage I start to wonder if it's better for more users to self-host their own instances with simpler software like snac2 by @grunfink.

I know that there's high potential for runaway disk space usage (among other problems) but it sometimes feels risky to depend on larger servers run by people in their free time.

Administrating a Mastodon server with a decent amount of users must be a major headache.

Alriiiight so Musk finally took a step it didn't even occur to me he'd take. Twitter's gone completely private. You can't see any page unless you're logged in. Not tweets, not profiles. (Embeds still work.) You can't even see whether a profile exists without being logged in.

Or maybe it's a bug? Twitter has literally no messaging anymore even on huge policy changes.

Anyway, I'm giving them until July 30, if they haven't fixed it by then I'm hosting an offsite archive and deleting my Tweets.
