The #radiation ☢️ reached #Earth in just over eight minutes and ionized the upper layer of Earth's atmosphere — the #thermosphere — triggering shortwave #radio blackouts on the sun-lit portion of Earth at the time including #SouthAmerica, #Africa and the #SouthernAtlantic. https://www.space.com/first-x-class-solar-flare-of-2024-seen-erupting-from-sun-video

Seeing secondhand reports of aurora being visible in South Florida (Miami). Anyone out there able to confirm?

Hmm, quite the solar flare today, per the NOAA -- it appears aircraft radios were affected.

NOAA SWPC video of the solar flare that spawned CMEs... Expected to cause some great aurora activity, potential to also cause other mischief (mostly in space/high latitudes). Though it will probably wipe out ham radio too this weekend. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dr2BIlDGDk

Remember the X8.7 solar flare on May 14, as sunspot region 3664 was rotating away from earth?

The #CME from that flare reached Mars on May 19. Mars rover Curiosity took some nighttime images of the Martian sky hoping to catch an #aurora.

#Mars lacks a global magnetic field, hence Martian aurorae are not concentrated at the poles, but instead appear as a “global diffuse aurora” associated with Mars’ ancient, magnetized crust.

Not clear if Curiosity succeeded.

FYI, the CDC has a series of 3 CME (continuing medical education) courses for ME/CFS

"Expert Guidance on Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS)"

"The activities in this series will help clinicians recognize the ME/CFS symptom spectrum, treat those patients, and use evidence-based approaches to help alleviate or eliminate symptoms or comorbid conditions"

STRONG SOLAR FLARE: A sunspot directly facing Earth erupted today, Nov. 28, producing an M9.8-class solar flare only percentage points below category X. The explosion almost certainly hurled a CME toward Earth, joining 2 to 3 more CMEs already en route. These events set the stage for geomagnetic storms later this week. An hour ago, I wasn't hearing Romania on 720 kHz; instead I had Iran 😮
Now, I do have Romania back on 720, but it's missing from 711 kHz; instead I have... Iran :v

630 & 963 Tunisia remain outstanding, as are 558 & 1170 from Slovenia (but not 549!). But NO Egypt, even on 864!

Bulgaria wasn't really heard throughout the evening on 576, but now it's fairly good.

A mindblowing thing is SBA Holy Quran sticking out on 873 (10kW) but down in the noise on 882 (100kW!)

Bloody hell.
I'm disappointed that this solar wind impact from a succession on Coronal Mass Ejections spat out by the Sun will happen in the middle of the day here in New Zealandso I won't see the aurora at it's peak.
On the other hand I'm pleased that the other side of the planet will wear it. Sorry you lot.

I think I’m going to plug my computer back in. I don’t see any signs of weird power dips or anything, and it’s annoying just using my phone. Hopefully we don’t get anything that the surge protectors won’t stop, and stay at “pretty lights in the sky tonight” rather than apocalyptic

I've got a question.
Is the line around the equator here, an artifact of this rendering or is something else going on?

So far, no power outages (or at least, not any noticeable in US) due to the solar storm, per poweroutage.us (outages in Florida are due to wind/tornadic activity earlier).

Aurora from the Chicago suburbs. Need to color correct these, but was too excited. First time I've seen the aurora and it was over the entire sky! Incredible!!

The aurora borealis. Pink, purple, blue, and green colors in the sky.

It's not quite as active now, but the aurora was wild earlier. This was just a simple night lapse on my Hero11 - we could see colors and pillars with the naked eye, but the camera is next level
