Backwashing the pool filter this morning, and having recently watched Dune, can't help but wonder what the first Fremen off-world must have thought when they encountered people throwing away gallons of water just to clean some crud off their sand...
One also wonders how they dealt with the problem of their hidden sietch water-hoards getting all algified and gross without losing or unusablizing some water in the process.
@wesdym@jesusmargar The major problem with that thesis is that - unlike Luke Skywalker - Paul Atreides is very much not a hero. Kind of the point of the first few books: despite his best efforts he still ends up being a genocidal monster with the blood of billions on his hands, and infinitely worse than the Emperors and Harkonnens that preceded him. He is only a hero in the sense that he can see this outcome and tries to prevent it happening. Yet fails miserably.
@wesdym@jesusmargar Joseph Campbell is an absolute racist, sexist hack and his bullshit "hero's journey/monomyth" only applies to one specific form of white, colonial storytelling
I wonder if this will eradicate the stench of Dune Part Two. It would need to be epic to do so. Given the travesty of the recent film “adaptation”. I’m still angry they fucked it up so much.
New on my blog is the second half of my top 10 imaginary worlds. I get a bit deeper this time (or go on a bit more!), as these are ones that have shaped me as a writer.
I have finished reading Chapterhouse Dune. My fools errand is finished. It’s not good, and of course ends with loose ends.
I think my personal recommendation is reading the first two books. Although just one or even zero are solid choices. Three is alright, except it’s a trap if it makes you curious and want to read more.
I’m tempted to revisit Heinlein who I haven’t read in at least twenty years, but I’m also afraid he’ll be disappointing.
