Overhearing some guys speaking at this coffee shop.

Every time I hear the language, I like the cadence and tone of it, I recall that it has a writing system that's designed to be very easy to learn, and think to myself, "Could it be that hard to learn?" ;)

I like Japanese, too, and while hiragana/katakana are easy to learn, Kanji scares the pants offa me. XD

@RL_Dane
Hangul, the Korean writing system, is very easy to learn. For someone with a Germanic language as their mother tongue, I believe that the language itself is one of the harder to learn, though.

In 2023 I read 15 books.
My usual rate: 60-100.
I think I've lost the ability to read anything longer than a pithy essay on Substack 😭
I read essays, blog posts, articles, posts.
But, but ... I feel that I'm losing something with this.
It disturbs me that I can't even focus long enough to complete a chapter. And that all that social media blog content was affecting my mood somehow.
Am I blathering?
How do I regain my reading abilities? 😅

@liztai
That will be a lot more challenging unless you have experience reading in those languages. I'm excited to be able to read more than a word at a time in

please send me some oxytocin-bringing things. my feed is lopsided this morning, sorry if i've boosted or wrote more than you want to see; the last BL i watched was too much cortisol without enough oxytocin; i've seen my 3 minute series enough that my brain is a bit blind to it, need to take a break; the weather is dire; and the madcap story i used to make up to cheer myself up has stopped living in my head since i wrote it down so i wouldn't forget it.
so i could use a bit of help today x

EllenInEdmonton,
@EllenInEdmonton@mstdn.ca avatar

@emmaaum Ah yes, "too much cortisol without enough oxytocin" is how I'd describe When the Camellia Blooms, which I'm halfway through watching. However, I'm moving up in the ranks in Duolingo and should be able to progress to the next level this week! Also, is happening and skills are being attained. I don't know if these "accomplishments" will boost your oxytocin but they certainly boost mine!

hyperfixations are never on inexpensive things. I expect that's a personality defect.

EllenInEdmonton,

@senanthic
Really happy that my current OTT hyperfixation is . Subscriptions to 2 streaming services and the purchase of a textbook are my only expenditures thus far. The trip to Korea that I'd like to take in a couple of years is slightly less cheap.

I was the Buddha baby of Cholon district in 1975 & my family had to deal with one week of line ups from strangers who wanted to see/meet/rub my belly & touch my head for good luck.
It was weird as heck to be told that story & stories surrounding it all, in my early adult years.
You can't tell now but I was the fattest, roundest baby born that year. I emerged from Mom's womb with just one perfect square patch of hair on top of my head. I was round & had many rolls on my arms/legs.

Haha, that's interesting!
Now that I'm watching and learning , I noticed that what we call "Wisdom Teeth", molars that come in when you're 18-21, are called "Love Teeth in Korean!

Haha, I'd love to do a with @liztai but I've promised myself not to take on new languages/cultures in dramas until I've already sorted out to my satisfaction, especially while I'm studying . Also, too many episodes! I'm very happy with the 16-20 episode format, given how enraptured I can become with these alternate universes! Still, I'm interested to know how this goes!

EllenInEdmonton,
@EllenInEdmonton@mstdn.ca avatar

@liztai Yeah, checking off tasks doesn't give me as much of a dopamine hit as starting something new does!! 🤣
Anyway, I'm getting a lot out of learning while also enjoying . Gaining new skills is very rewarding for me. And, after 14 years of no TV at all, I'm getting a LOT out of Korean dramas. I'll try to avoid wavering as long as I can!

It's a good day. After a quiet, smoky day at home yesterday, I started in , made aloo palak with eggs for breakfast, watched the second-last episode of with my peeps in 3 countries, and now, it's time to finish the kimchi and get the laundry done.
I'll start yoga strong classes this week as well as a discussion group. learning is going quite well. I made a Quizlet set with a lot of common words/phrases in K-dramas.
coming up on Wednesday.

ATTN all who have been bitten by the drama or kpop bug or those who merely want to learn hangul: the Korean Cultual Centre Canada in Ottawa will begin registering on Aug 4 for Zoom autumn classes.

$50 for a 13 wk course and some resources are free. There appear to be multiple levels with each divided into 2 parts. If like in previous yrs, these will be offered again in the winter if you are ready for the next level.

I watched episode ten of See You in My 19th Life the other day, and then realized I only have two episodes left to the end of the series.

Now, I don't want to watch anymore because I just don't want the series to end.

I'm thoroughly invested in this show.

EllenInEdmonton,

Haha, I don't dare expand my countries or my platforms!! is already taking over my life. And, I lived in for a couple of years as a kid so I have a starter knowledge of language/culture. Dangerous. Already spending hours/week studying as well as watching . I need to wait until winter to expand on my indoor activities.

EllenInEdmonton,

Oh, that's totally it! I only started this in April but I think I just started my 10th series and I checked out a couple of others. I'm working my way through on Duolingo. I actually really appreciate the emotional workout that each new series brings. Noisy laughter, wrenching sobs, anxious anticipation. Just opened a account to track my new addiction.
