Looking at today it's all "signal to noise" mess, there is some signal, but this is washed over by waves of noise.

We are increasingly seeing the same mess come to our reboot spaces. What's the plan to push signal and reduce noise?

Hamishcampbell, to random

Some people may only value things that come from sources, which can be limiting and narrow-minded.

For a lot of our in this space, things only matter if they come from this is obviously crap blinded behaver - but it's hard to communicate why, likely they can't see me ;)

PS. I liked that joke.

I don’t always agree with George Monbiot’s analysis of things (though I have huge respect for the man for his research skills and integrity), but I think this piece on not blowing up pipelines is spot on.

witchescauldron,

@tf I know from his Oxford days at undercurrents. His analysis is fad, his endings tend to be pants, its

On the subject of the article, I made a video on this yesterday https://youtu.be/1bQTmYTcCMQ

We are having an increasing signal-to-noise problem as more people flood back to the we need much stronger tools and myths and traditions to mediate this mess... shovels and composting comes to mind

@fediversenews

So, I think I've dug as deeply into the drama as I need to, and settled on some conclusions.

  • Most basically, the best insights came from seeing conversations on another platform: discord.

Admins from both sides were talking. And as it's a chat platform, the engagement and conversation was clearly more direct, free, expressive and clarifying.

If the fediverse wants to be the new internet, seriously, it needs to growup and move on from just microblogging.

Hamishcampbell,

@maegul @fediversenews

This is noise - the is over 40 codebases for this to be signal you would likely have to be talking about and even then it's still kinda noise.

is bringing a "signal-to-noise" issue to the this is not a big problem, but it is something we need to mediate.

Composting and shovels come to mind

Hamishcampbell, to random

This is how the works https://www.techdirt.com/2023/04/20/bluesky-plans-decentralized-composable-moderation/ our ideas are going , but nobody is going to link back, even the term "compost".

"decentralize is for the fediverse to succeed."

By decentralizing at its core, it is important to not do the obvious thing and centralize round one codebase and one instances, this is so obviously a stupid thing to do for the and the , but as you say it's a good thing to do for so let's talk balance BEFORE you push this out as damage.
So everyone is clear and responsible for their actions, in public

Hamishcampbell, to random

It's interesting that we are finding it hard to move past the "policing" of language use.

Do you think this is useful to think of as legacy "stupid" that nobody can be more right than anyone else, maybe this is a good example of the capture of the idea of imperialism

Would be funny if it did not matter, we have so much compost to shovel.

Hamishcampbell,

The of is bringing in meany groups with a diversity of agender, a lot of these are capitalism friendly, this is normal, the problem is when they HIDE this and pull on the dress, this is a problem. Best for people to be honest about their agendas, it helps sought through the mess to be composted.

On one hand it's a good project, on the other hand it's a deeply problematic project that is pushing damage as much as good.

Would be useful to take a moment, in good faith, to balance these hands.

It is obviously BAD non-native behaver to PUSH this over the without wider REAL input.

This is a problem brings with it that we need to try and do better. Ideas please https://socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/a-place-to-talk-about-spreadmastodon-org-and-wider-issues-that-this-brings-up/3130/3

culture comes from the principles and values of the early internet, where open standards and decentralized systems were prioritized over closed, proprietary ones. This culture is based on the idea of a free and open internet, where anyone can participate and create without the need for gatekeepers.

    Hamishcampbell,

We need to think about the of these issues' due to the increasing visibility and attention they are pushing in the wider public, move back to the .

With this shift in attention comes the risk of co-optation or watering down of the original values and principles. It is important to be on guard and maintain a healthy balance, ensuring that the voices and needs of communities are prioritized and that efforts are not insincere or ineffective.

Why is Mastodon so dominant in the fediverse?

    Hamishcampbell,

@raucao if you wonder what the "problem" is? It's that for the last 40 years the domanet ideology has been neo-liberalism which has proven to be a , look at movement for factual information on this.

All the are made as an image of this ideology and its also imbedded in different ways in all projects unless people knowingly think in different non ways.
