So I've spent several hours trying to debug a problem with booting #postmarketOS on x86_64 systems that use 32-bit EFI...
I tried to document the issue and current debug here[1], just in case any bootloader, firmware, or kernel people would like to have a look and offer ideas 🙏
For those wanting to give #Lomiri a try on #postmarketOS based on my last post, I wrote a quick shell script to set up the pmaports environment for you. All you have to do is run the shell script and then run pmbootstrap init and make sure to select "y" when prompted "Build outdated packages during 'pmbootstrap install'?".
All parts of #Lomiri have been upstreamed from #postmarketOS to #AlpineLinux!!! Now it is super easy to test Lomiri yourself! Only the pmOS UI package needs to be built manually. I might write a quick post explaining how to do it if people are interested.
#phosh works great on the #uConsole running #postmarketos 😊 @agx do you know a way of booting in Landscape mode? Currently I have to switch to Landscape mode at each boot using the quicksettings.
I’ve tried setting rotate=90 in phoc.ini but that just rotates the lockscreen.
What's the go-to these days for a non vender android to put on devices? I've got a Samsung SM-T580 (Tab A 2016 model) that I've found myself thinking could be more useful if wiped and Termux installed.
Okay, quick check suggests LineageOS is the current big non-vender Android but that I could also just ditch Android and use PostmarketOS to run a version of Alpine Linux on it. I'll have to dig more. Any opinions out there in the benevolent hivemind? #lineageos#postmarketos
#Lomiri on #postmarketOS running on systemd! It is in a very early state and barely anything works yet, but I am excited about the prospects of not having to dance around the OpenRC polyfills anymore!
That "edit your podcast using Vim" program (recently mentioned on the #postmarketOS podcast) now supports #microhttps://github.com/scateu/tsv_edl.vim because I realized I have a project that this is a good fit for, and I write micro plugins #lua. It's nice to have a lightweight audio/video editor that works in my favorite text editor.
Well, in celebration of #KDE#Plasma6, I thought I should give @postmarketOS another go on my old Samsung Galaxy A3. The documentation was not at all straightforward, not thanks to #Nix shell I manages to get all required software ready and it booted into #PostmarketOS.🍾
This was the good news. Now the bad news: the PostmarketOS documentation reads "if the image has a pin on it try 0000, 1111, 1234, or 147147". I tried them in order and the phone died and doesn't turn on anymore 🤔
I have recently taken interest in reviving old tech, which people have stopped using but the hardware of devices is still pretty much working fine.
Recently revived a Samsung Galaxy Tab 8 (2015) which was last running Android 7. Hardware of the device has no issues. Found out a build of #postmarketOS and installed it. And now it has Linux kernel 6.6 and Plasma Mobile running well enough to be used to read RSS feeds, listen to music and browse the web. Even to toot with #tokodon
There is a call here for small projects by #NLnet for free and open source hardware, software and open access scientific papers. Perhaps you could get some fund to port your favorite Linux mobile distribution to some phone?
After #postmarketos announced support for systemd, I saw several people asking why we cared at all about how #alpinelinux developers felt regarding this news.
#postmarketOS relies on #alpinelinux for some very important things... like their vast packaging and binary repo. They maintain it by providing stable releases, security patching, and updates for the apps there. We built pmOS on top of this.
The folks at Alpine also maintain our favorite package manager (apk).
That's a LOT of stuff we get. We try to return the favor by helping to maintain some of those packages, like the ones we contributed. We care about Alpine Linux's opinion because we would like to continue to rely on their great work.
Also if there's anything #postmarketOS could be doing more of to support #alpinelinux, I hope they let us know :D
