#DailyRetroGame 140: Last Ninja 2 (1988)

The original Last Ninja was style over substance – a good-looking but fiddly game. The sequel refined the gameplay and ramped up the visuals and audio. It still had annoying moments, but felt more fluid. The odd juxtaposition of the ninja in New York was also fun – not least how he used two toilet flush chains to fashion himself a nunchaku. Let’s hope he washed his hands after that.

Got the BBC B emulator back up and running. BeebEm.

There is a specific linux version, but it hasn't seen updates in two decades, so this is the windows version running under wine. Does a fine job.

Turns out I still suck at Chuckie Egg forty years later.

I've been doing some testing of MS-DOS games on the Anbernic RG35XX.

First and foremost...DOS games look GORGEOUS on this device. The pics don't do it justice, the colors pop and the graphics are super sharp. They also run super well, at least the games I tried from 1996 and earlier. I didn't attempt anything in the 3D realm (heh) due to control constraints.

Which is one of the big troubles with running DOS games on a handheld...no keyboard. As long as it's a run and gun or has Gravis support, there shouldn't be any issues with running.

Oh...and getting by copy protection is a hurdle too. Might want to whip out those cracked copies. :)

While this is far from my favourite Final Fight game, I don't believe it deserves this score at all.

Ok, can someone talk me out of this.

There’s the part of my brain which likes to make me procrastinate when I’m supposed to be doing something else.

And that part of the brain is currently saying

“You know like how itch.io is pretty great but they don’t like having the ability to assign retro platforms for games and they make you use tags, which is useless as you get stuff like ‘Atari inspired games’ - what about if you made a site like itch but just for retro platforms… 🤔 “

Today: Audio mute and pause

The DOSBox Staging audio master output can be manually muted using Ctrl+F8 (Cmd+F8 on macOS).

You can also mute the audio automatically when DOSBox Staging goes to the background with this config setting:
'mute_when_inactive = true'

Or you can pause emulation entirely when in the background with:
'pause_when_inactive = true'

Bon chance... and tough luck! A new Lock 'n Chase for the 2600

M Network was one of the underachievers among the Atari 2600's many third party developers. As a division of Mattel, the makers of the competing Intellivision, they had no reason to bring their best work to the 2600... and so they very much didn't. Games by M Network were almost certain to be vastly inferior to their...
