Indonesia's Ruang volcano erupted on Tuesday, spewing lava as lightning flashes lit up its crater, prompting authorities to raise the alert status and evacuate more than 12,000 people living on a nearby island. #Indonesia’s Ruang volcano off the island of #Sulawesi erupted on Tuesday, April 30, spewing #ash and #lava, after an eruption earlier this month led to hundreds of evacuations and an airport closure.
#MountRuang, located in in North #Sulawesi Province, first erupted at 9:45pm (13:45 GMT) on Tuesday sending billowing clouds of smoke and ash high into the sky.
Officials worry that part of the #volcano could collapse into the sea and cause a #tsunami as it did during a previous eruption in 1871 (#Krakatoa).
More than 800 people were forced to evacuate their homes in #Indonesia as the #Ruang#volcano continues its eruption.
A #tsunami watch has been issued for the entire west coast of #Tagulandang, Indonesia's North #Sulawesi province.
Indonesian rescuers stepped up search efforts for 21 missing Indonesian fishermen on Thursday night, officials said, with another survivor found after their boat capsized days earlier leaving two dead. At least 12 crew have been found after they survived for days by clinging to their boat when it overturned on Saturday in waters...
A brightly colored flycatcher living in hills and montane forests. Its limited range extends from Sulawesi to Maluku in Indonesia, as well as the Philippines.
Brilliantly visualised @Nature essay by @dyanilewis, photography by Ulet Ifansasti, on the stunning 45,000 year-old #CavePaintings in #Sulawesi, Indonesia - now threatened by dissolution and irretrievable loss:
Sulawesi Myzomela
Seen at Malino Highlands. Fairly common in the area.
Turns out they’re related to honeyeaters, a family that is mostly restricted to Oceania, with just a single species found west of the Wallace Line (the Brown Honeyeater’s range extending to Bali).
In a country that faces #deforestation crisis & attendant #HabitatLoss, the sprawling park, stands apart. It's home to some of the world’s most #diverse & #endangered#wildlife, including hornbills, tarsier & babirusas.
My latest #Wikipedia biography for #WikipediaAsianMonth. Hoo Eng Djie (c.1906-1960) was a Peranakan Chinese poet and songwriter from #Sulawesi who primarily wrote in the Makassarese language and other local languages, in traditional forms, eventually adapting them into a modern Kroncong orchestration by the 1940s. I may add a bit more to the article over time as he seems to have been a prolific artist and character who did a lot more than I've documented so far. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoo_Eng_Djie
