An old tram track embedded in a cobbled lane behind the former Coplawhill Tram Shed in the Pollokshields area of Glasgow. Built in 1893, this depot closed in the 1960s, and now houses The Tramway, an internationaly renowned arts venue.

One of Glasgow's few surviving stone tramways on Cleveden Crescent Lane in the west of the city. Consisting of slabs of smoothed granite, they reduced the friction between cartwheels and cobbled streets, while the setts in between the tramways provided grip for the horses' hooves. This allowed one horse to pull what it would otherwise take two horses to move.
In Britain, this started with the creation of the Birkenhead Tramway in the 1860s, which, rather oddly, was built by the American George Francis Train!

On day 2 of our Germany trip we took the Kirnitzschtal tramway from Bad Schandau to the Lichtenhain Waterfall, where we started our hike. It was a lovely way to start the day, especially since the cars in use are historic.

Je sais qu'il existe des trains, à écartement métrique, qui ont une crémaillère utilisée sur les rampes les plus fortes. Exemple: Le MGB.
Mais je sais pas si il y a assez de place sur les bogies de tram pour un système de crémaillère. Et j'ignore si la crémaillère peut être intégrée à la route, comme les rails.
