question... we're getting notifications for a fire ~50 miles away. Is there a set radius for notifications? I don't see anything on the website.

Maybe @ai6yr knows?

Does anyone know of a alternative for the Midwest?

Maybe @ai6yr ?

WatchDuty has turned on support for Texas IMMEDIATELY due to wildfires, they are enabling reporting and everyone is pitching in now to get scanner traffic up.

New sticker on the vehicle. Probably should replace the fire dept one.

Elsewhere someone just asked a good question: "You like better than ?"

They're rather different. PulsePoint is going to give you dispatch and other info depending on your settings. Might get news of a new fire start in the area sooner than WatchDuty. Bonus points for being able to turn on scanner audio.

But once a fire is going and growing, WatchDuty is going to be people like Ben (@ai6yr) & a few other scanner & disaster trackers who will be feeding all sorts of info - images from webcams, screenshots of air traffic sites showing the air support locations, maps of evac zones, etc.

Ideally you'd have both if you're in a fire prone area.

@MsMerope @ai6yr

Which reminds me. If anyone is in a position to donate to , it's an extremely valuable resource that can save lives and is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit run by volunteers, so it would be a tax write-off too if you need one.

has a $300k budget gap to fill. Please either join or donate to help. Watch duty was amazing to have this fire season. It actually kept me out of trouble on multiple occasions.

Please dig deep and make this a permanent thing.

After updating to , I am missing a lot of notifications and went searching to figure out how to change the new pleasant default notifications sound back only to find it cannot be done. I hope more third party apps allow custom sound for notification tone like app “The new iOS 17 notification sound is quieter, and there’s no way to change it back” https://9to5mac.com/2023/09/19/ios-17-iphone-app-notification-sound/

@BakerRL75 @ai6yr Amazing. So changed the default notification tone to a quieter sound and unless they let users customize that in the future I am missing a lot of fire notifications. I wonder if has a way of adding this feature in future…

30 minute delay between notification of possible evacuations on the fire in Lower Lake, California vs. WEA. Proof of the usefulness of having a team of volunteers listening to fires... that's a 30 minute heads up.

Damn. My “Watch Duty” app is going nuts with notifications today. There are like 50 or more burning around us on almost all sides. Still well away from the populated center along the I-5, but filling the air with smoke and keeping the tankers flying continuous loops (until the visibility stops them). Tanker base is just ten minutes from me, so we hear them overhead. I hope we get some significant moisture (and no more lightening) from the remnants of TS Hillary. Some of these fires gonna burn til October rains.
