A Russian court on Tuesday fined the Wikimedia Foundation, which owns Wikipedia, 3 million roubles ($36,854) for refusing to delete an article on Ukraine’s Azov battalion, the Interfax news agency reported.
Wikimedia could not immediately be reached for comment. It has previously said information that Russian authorities complained about was well-sourced and in line with Wikipedia standards. #rusia#wikipedia#ukraine
This week marks 10 years since Edward #Snowden's global surveillance revelations started, including that the NSA's #XKeyscore program was specifically targeting #Wikipedia users.
The Electronic Frontier Foundation has published a recap of the past decade discussing the things we learned, the privacy battles we all won, and what we're still fighting for:
Here in #rural#Minnesota, our internet sometimes drops for hours, sometimes a day or two. For fun, I setup #Kiwix offline internet content server using and old laptop and WiFi router. Now we have our own private #internet that never goes down (except when the power is out, which is another toot).
We have #Wikipedia and lots of other useful content, all available #offline without an internet connection. To learn more, follow the Kiwix Project.
16-year-old User:Harry sidhuz hit the 50k mark, writing about a soap-like powder made from a bush that has been used for cleaning clothes in #Punjab. And that article doesn't appear to exist in any other language Wikipedias!
TUX
Tux is the penguin that Linux uses as a logo. In 1993, Linus Torvald went to #Australia and got bitten by a penguin in a #Canberra zoo. In 1996, Alan Cox made a cartoon design of a penguin that Torvalds found online.
The name #TUX has been coined by James Hughes, and it is the contraction of "Torvald's UniX"... Weird, as you know, #Linux Is Not UniX :D

Boulton and Park were two Victorian cross-dressers who went under the names Fanny and Stella. They appeared on stage in drag and—to the shock of Victorian society—did so in public and in their private lives.
The events surrounding the two are seen as key moments in the UK's gay history and is today's English #Wikipedia featured article:
#Wikipediabeing designated a Very Large Online Platform under the EU Digital Services Act sorta feels like it snuck past me... (admittedly I've been keeping a closer eye on the UK Online Safety Bill stuff....)
If you don't want to watch all 10 hours and 7 minutes of the 2016 film "Paint Drying", #Wikipedia has you covered with a 3-sentence synopsis in today's featured article:
The film is a protest against both film censorship in the UK, and the unfair cost to independent filmmakers imposed by the BBFC's mandatory classification requirement.
So today I arrived in #Swaffham, #Norfolk, #UK. The #Wikipedia page for Swaffham lists Stephen Fry @stephenfry as one of the "notable people". But on his own Wikipedia page there is no mention at all of Swaffham. So that seems a bit strange. But the page does include this quote on why Wikipedia is one of his favorite sites. Now I understand! 😂
