I can finally say I’ve upgraded successfully to #Fedora40. It was not without hassle this time and it started with what seemed to be a system that did not even give me a prompt after #rebooting, although the update process had seemed to go smoothly and quickly. Luckily, the virtual screens were working and so I could #login to a #shell. Although #sddm didn’t seem to be working, #kdm was and so I was able to open a desktop session, but only in #Gnome
📆 Next Thursday at #EmbeddedOSSummit in Seattle, don't miss my colleague's Julian Bouzas presentation on #WirePlumber smart filters! There is also going to be a live stream, in case you are not attending in person.
After upgrading to #WirePlumber 0.5.0 I ended up without any sound outputs.
I had to manually remove configs from ~/.local/state/{pipewire|wireplumber} and ~/.config/pipewire to get it working again.
This is not how usable system should do migration to the new version. https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pipewire/wireplumber/-/issues/613
📢 As some users have been surprised by this, let me make this clear that #WirePlumber 0.5.0 uses a different configuration format, so any configuration files that you previously had in place will stop working after the upgrade ⚠️
I will provide a small guide on how to migrate things shortly.
I guess I'm a bit addicted to living on the edge. 😜🫣 For example, I switched to #wayland, #pipewire or #wireplumber early on, despite some "rocky roads".
I usually enjoy to try new things. I think that's why I like the idea of a #rolling#distribution so much. I often feel a bit like unwrapping presents at Christmas when I'm #updating my system. Hahaha, I haven't done the latter in decades. 😅
Question regarding #pipewire and #wireplumber - Sometimes when I boot my PC after hibernation my audio interface is replaced by Dummy Output - Is there a way to fix it by restarting Pipewire/Wireplumber somehow?
My current solution is to unplug/plug the physical device and then it works fine again 🤔
On #Fedora 38, #PipeWire (or #WirePlumber ?) randomly stops outputting sound (to my #Behringer USB DAC) frequently enough (once a week or so?) that I now have to put this in my #Linux workstation's ~/.bashrc because I'll never remember this type of magic incantation:
alias restart_pipewire="systemctl --user restart wireplumber pipewire pipewire-pulse"
#ArchLinux / #danctnix now ships #Linux#megi 6.4 which has all #PinePhonePro patches for correct camera rotation and location (front/back - used for automatic mirroring in some apps and better camera naming).
One of the issue preventing #LinuxMobile distros from shipping a #PipeWire / #libcamera camera stack is the fact that it requires #wireplumber as session manager, which again does not always play nicely with #pulseaudio, if that is still used as sound server.
Unfortunately switching to PW for sound is not always possible yet because some mobile-specific packages depend on PA. So if you want to help with camera enablement, please consider helping with issues such as https://source.puri.sm/Librem5/wys/-/issues/13 :)
Dreading the conversion of my #Pipewire media-session configs to #wireplumber once #NixOS 21.11 is fully released 😢
I've had some custom nodes wired up so I could manage #Discord audio specially and pass desktop audio through a second account. I'll have to play with wireplumber next month, there might be a better way to do it using the #Lua configs but I'm concerned about my ability to debug it 😅
