Turns out nuclear power is a lot more expensive than renewable power.

https://reneweconomy.com.au/nuclear-option-costs-six-times-more-than-renewables-study-finds/

Alexlee,
@Alexlee@sciences.social avatar

@billbennett I totally 100% agree nuclear is insanely expensive, often dangerous, unsustainable and leaves a massive problem of radioactive waste. However, as Brett Christophers says in The Price is Wrong about energy - renewable energy generation is cheap - but distribution is expensive and rarely factored in. Renewables require redesigning the grid to transport from and to different places that are often quite remote. So needs public investment in distribution to take advantage of cheap prices

Joe Biden should be next

"Joe Biden has done more than arm Israel. He’s complicit in Gaza’s devastating famine" https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/gaza-famine-biden-israel-hamas-b2542961.html

@FrankFrank @Lassielmr @palestine I trust that the ICC know their shit, probably more than you, unless you are an expert in international law (you don't appear to be)

Alexlee,
@Alexlee@sciences.social avatar

@FrankFrank @Lassielmr @palestine I think the ICC know about the Rome Statute

Alexlee,
@Alexlee@sciences.social avatar

@FrankFrank @Lassielmr @palestine saying "others are allowed to do genocide why are they picking on us" isnt a defence. Its suggesting you understand israel is doing genocide and then defending it with whataboutery.

While i think its important to engage with people we/I dont agree with, im not willing to engage with people who are aware that a gecocide is taking pace but stil defend it. You are blocked.

@palestine the other protest was against China's banning of Falun Gong, a bizarre ban given that Falun Gong is mostly a set of exercises like tai chi and not exactly a major threat...

Informative, moving, galvanising Palestinian Solidarity Campaign () event here in Eastbourne last night. In a packed room of over 100 old and young, we heard Yara Hawari’s brilliant analysis from West Bank and Andrew Feinstein powerfully talk about apartheid and the pivotal, corrupting influence of the global arms trade on the world order and Western leaders.

As Yara said: “this is a moment of clarity”.

Wonderful to have this moment together, with your neighbours. 1/6

In an era of post-truth, the strategy of rigidly defending your version of truth and attacking other people's view of the truth is a largely self-destructive excercise that just creates a never ending argument

Understanding the logics and rationales of those people we disagree with is a far better way but requires humility and nuance

Naomi Klein in Doppelganger and Büscher in The Truth About Nature show us how this can be done with , and

I personally think the concept of logic is unhelpful in a post-truth world.

Lakatos explains this well in his work. Those with different paradigms or worldviews cannot agree on a common rationality because they have literally different worldviews.

This is increasingly true in the post-truth era. There is no common worldview, so therefore no common rationality.

Emotion is a good approach. As is how worldviews are created, e.g. by narrratives.

Sorry, corrected my post... I meant Kuhn not Lakatos (it was a few years since I read this)

What's the point of Ofcom if it an't see an egregious breaking of rules?
GPLB: "Ofcom launches investigation into whether Rishi Sunak's People's Forum Q&A on GB News broke impartiality rules"

Alexlee,
@Alexlee@sciences.social avatar

@fkamiah17 It happened just up the road from me. A friend applied to go on the show but was phoned by them and was asked what her question was. She said it was about aid to Gaza. They didn't sound impressed and unsurprisingly she was not invited to the show. I believe this is a clear breach of OFCOM rules...

Julian Assange’s moment of truth has arrived – and the stakes are high

#Assange is a #criminal arse (#rape) and a self important one. Selective revelations were misguided and damaging to all. BUT amongst WikiLeaks material, 'These revealed details of US activities in Iraq and Afghanistan, including attacks on civilians. They also revealed details of the US treatment of prisoners in Guantánamo Bay’

https://www.theguardian.com/media/2024/feb/18/julian-assanges-moment-of-truth-has-arrived-and-the-stakes-are-high

We can not allow US hubris and indignation to rule us.

His refusal to be tried could be largely narcissism, protecting his heroic self-image. But could be other things. Many sex offenders are repeating traumas that have been done to them and trying to block these experiences out, but through failing to come to terms with them, and end up repeating. Logically yes it would make sense to be tried, but his refusal to be tried for rape may well be connected to all sorts of traumas and psychological stuff we dont know about
