THE ILLUSION OF MORAL DECLINE by Adam M. Mastroianni and Daniel T. Gilbert (Nature, 2023).

"In a series of studies using both archival and original data (n = 12,492,983), we show that people in at least 60 nations around the world believe that morality is declining, that they have believed this for at least 70 years and that they attribute this decline both to the decreasing morality of individuals as they age and to the decreasing morality of successive generations. Next, we show that people’s reports of the morality of their contemporaries have not declined over time, suggesting that the perception of moral decline is an illusion. Finally, we show how a simple mechanism based on two well-established psychological phenomena (biased exposure to information and biased memory for information) can produce an illusion of moral decline."

De Gruyter Handbook of Citizens’ Assemblies (2023) #OpenAccess #Book by M. Reuchamps, J. Vrydagh and Y Welp (eds.).

"Citizens’ Assemblies (CAs) are flourishing around the world. Quite often composed of randomly selected citizens, CAs, arguably, come as a possible answer to contemporary democratic challenges. Democracies worldwide are indeed confronted with a series of disruptive phenomena such as a widespread perception of distrust and growing polarization as well as low performance. Many actors seek to reinvigorate democracy with citizen participation and deliberation. CAs are expected to have the potential to meet this twofold objective."

THE PERIPHERAL (William Gibson, 2014; Spanish edition 2017).

First novel of the trilogy (not yet finished) the Jackpot. In 2020 the second novel, "Agency" was published (I am reading it now). I haven't seen the Amazon Prime version and I'm not sure I'm going to see it. The reason is that I don't think it can live up to the novel. Perhaps one of the best novels translating today's complex reality (past, present, fact, fiction, economics, politics...).

"Colonial statues in post-colonial Africa: a multidimentional heritage" by Sophia Labadi (2023).

"Is history being destroyed when colonial statues are removed from public space? This paper has explained that history is often being made when they are removed. Indeed, the hidden motivations for the construction and/or upkeep of these statues can then be revealed, along with their entangled colonial or racist legacies. Besides, their removals can aid in rectifying history, exposing in some cases the Eurocentrism of public spaces, and European epistemic domination. Such removal makes space for the erection of memorials for local heroes, who might have played more significant roles than colonial or racist figures".

"Why is the US far right finding its savior in Spanish dictator Francisco Franco?" by Jason Wilson ()

"Some US far-right figures have made renewed attempts to rehabilitate the 20th century Spanish dictator Gen Francisco Franco in recent months, praising him as an avatar of religious authoritarianism, and praising his actions during and after the Spanish civil war as a model for confronting the left in the US."

"The critics of this flurry of neo-Francoism say that the real target of this revisionism is domestic attitudes to US democracy."

"For Faber, parts of the the American right are captured by “the dream of order, where social order is more important than democracy, and democracy is a threat to social order”."

The idea of a "moral decline" is linked to the narratives we create about the past, in which events are idealised or simplified. On the other hand, human beings have a tendency to analyse events in terms of how we would like things to be. This example was published last year in the Times of India Reader's Blog:

"Moral values are fading these days. […] The culture is degrading day by day due to the effect of the western influence and movies which often mislead the younger generation.
[…] The low moral values have created unrest and turmoil in society. […] We can dream of a kind and honest world only if we nurture moral values and keep our ethos."

Such arguments, with many variations, can be found everywhere nowadays. The only problem is that similar arguments can be found in texts from many other periods in the past.

The conservation of religious heritage still in use poses a number of very complex problems: "Conservation of Living Religious Heritage" (Nicholas Stanley-Price Robert Killick Herb Stovel, 2003).

@academicchatter
@histodons
@religion

"Sometimes the conservator’s instincts (to preserve material fabric and to minimize change) run counter to the religious community’s interest in continuity and renewal. The traditional desire of resident
monks to renew painted surfaces can sometimes conflict with official conservation policy, as has happened at the World Heritage site of Dambulla in Sri Lanka. At Anthony Island on Canada’s West Coast, also a World Heritage site and home to the last surviving in situ cluster of Haida Indian totem poles, the choice of ‘continuity’ as the primary conservation goal has meant allowing poles to decay, while resisting calls from conservators to have them removed to museum environments".

AMERICA’S BIGGEST MUSEUMS FAIL TO RETURN NATIVE AMERICAN HUMAN REMAINS (ProPublica, by Logan Jaffe, Mary Hudetz and Ash Ngu, 2023).

"As the United States pushed Native Americans from their lands to make way for westward expansion throughout the 1800s, museums and the federal government encouraged the looting of Indigenous remains, funerary objects and cultural items. Many of the institutions continue to hold these today — and in some cases resist their return despite the 1990 passage of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act."

Transgression is an essential concept for understanding many of today's political dynamics.

POPULISM AS A TRANSGRESSIVE STYLE by Théo Aiolfi (2022).

"As a consequence of its performative turn, the critical literature on populism has dedicated increasing attention to its sociocultural and stylistic features. Among the most prominent concepts underpinning this approach is the notion that populism relies on the “flaunting of the low” or the use of “bad manners.” This article engages in an extensive discussion of the way this concept is used in the literature and showcases its main limitations. In replacement, I then suggest the alternative concept of transgression, understood as the violation of a norm, which has the substantial advantages of being more flexible and versatile as well as less reliant on a normative binary".

One of the thinkers who has influenced me most is the sociologist John Law, one of the creators of Actor-network theory, along with Bruno Latour, among others. I especially like his book "After Method" (2004), very influenced by the amazing work of Annemarie Mol (especially her "The Body Multiple"). For those who want to know more about Law, I recommend his website http://heterogeneities.net/ There is a lot of very interesting material (papers, projects, etc.).

How to study the messiness of social realities? ➡️ "I want to argue that while standard methods are often extremely good at what they do, they are badly adapted
to the study of the ephemeral, the indefinite and the irregular".

DIGITAL ARCHIVES AND COLLECTIONS
CREATING ONLINE ACCESS TO CULTURAL HERITAGE by Katja Müller (2021) (Made available under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 license).

"Museums and archives all over the world digitize their collections and provide online access to heritage material. But what factors determine the content, structure and use of these online inventories? This book turns to India and Europe to answer this question. It explains how museums and archives envision, decide and conduct digitization and online dissemination. It also sheds light on born-digital, community-based archives, which have established themselves as new actors in the field".

Museums are undergoing a transformation: MUSEUMS, EQUALITY AND SOCIAL JUSTICE (2012)

#OpenAccess #Museum #SocialJustice

"Perhaps the most positive response to the rights revolution is a generosity of spirit and an expression of solidarity with the human condition and, in particular, with those who are marginalised. As the chapters make clear, however, good intentions and generosity are not enough to sustain positive social change. The contribution of any social institution is only as good as its analysis of society and as the role it chooses to play in response. Thus, the rights revolution also confronts museums with a series of intellectual, political and ethical tasks as well as cultural and emotional learning. […] As some of the contributors venture to suggest, museums have unique contributions to make as agents of cultural activism, as leaders, and as revolutionaries".

‘It’s totally broken down’: tourism surge forcing Ibiza’s workers to live in car parks” by Sam Jones #TheGuardian

“In Ibiza – as in neighbouring Mallorca and in the Canary islands – it is increasingly obvious that neither the island nor its housing market can put up with the huge numbers of tourists that arrive each year.

“Over the past five years – but mainly since the pandemic – people have been feeling that everything’s oversaturated, that there are more and more tourists, and that leads to roads and public services becoming overloaded,” says Rafael Giménez, of Prou Eivissa (Enough Ibiza), a group that is campaigning for limits on the number of visitors and vehicles onthe island.

“Ibiza’s an island, so housing is limited by definition. The law of supply and demand has totally broken down.”

"‘Recipe for disaster’: Venice entry fee sparks confusion and protest on day one" by Angela Giuffrida

"On the first day of what the mayor of Venice has hailed as a bold experiment in reducing over-tourism, day-trippers faced a €5 (£4.30) charge, which kicked in at 8.30am on Thursday and will apply on 29 peak days until 14 July as part of a trial.

The scheme is intended to help the city better manage the millions of tourists that visit every year, even if it only applies to those coming just for the day – and even if, as critics argue, the relatively low cost is unlikely to prove a deterrent."

"Most of the day-trippers arriving at Santa Lucia came prepared with a QR code proving they had paid the toll, but there was still confusion among people with hotel bookings who were unaware they still had to go through the process of confirming their exemption online."

Huge Soviet-era monument taken down in Kyiv as Ukraine continues 'derussification' #TheArtNewspaper

“A Soviet-era monument believed to glorify Ukraine’s ties to Russia is being dismantled on orders of the Kyiv city government in the latest stage of derussification following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Kyiv’s Department of Territorial Control announced the start of the monument’s removal in a Facebook post on 30 April, stressing its massive size: “The sculptural composition is large, consists of about 20 elements weighing between 6,000kg and 7,000kg each. Due to the complexity of the design, dismantling may take a few days.””

Theft of Bronze Age gold artefacts from UK museum sparks fresh concerns about lack of government investment in sector by Joe Ware #TheArtNewspaper

“The theft of a Bronze Age gold torc and bracelet from a UK institution has sparked calls for greater government investment in the museum sector.

Police are yet to make arrests and are appealing for information to track down two thieves who broke into the Ely Museum, Cambridgeshire, on 7 May and escaped on electric scooters.

With gold prices hitting a record high in recent months experts are worried that the precious artefacts, worth £220,000 in their current form, might be melted down for their scrap metal value.”
