This building was built in 1996. This panel looks like it's from 1966.

If the indicators' source of illumination is LEDs, then I'd label it "Modern."

This kinda stuff is so freaking conservative...Recalling the control panel on a giant centrifugal HVAC compressor: looked 30 years out of date.

"Conservative" all the way down, I guess.

I was wondering about that. Wrapped in foil (prevent light exposure), sealed (prevent oxygen exposure), and in a fridge or freezer, I imagine it might keep for quite a while?

I love the one where the teeny tiny orbiter with the comically small ion thruster simply DRAGS the asteroid along by gravitational attraction. Not the fastest in the world, but incredibly precise.

Often people mention the "pocket people" who live in their phones, or greet "the people who live in my phone" and as one of those people...

I kind of like that idea. It's weird, I know, but it's kind of funny to me imagining that there exists a tiny world a bit like that Emoji movie, in which little digital versions of us exist.

Are they partial or almost complete mimics? Do they realize they are digital ghosts? Would these tiny little versions of ourselves be playing the roles we present to the world, or living authentically? I want to read the story of these worlds...

I'm pretty out of it today... alarm went off late so I stumbled to my computer in a fog... coffee in hand.

Not much sleep last night... dinner disagreed with my belly, but my belly eventually won.

But bear with me. I'm totally out of it right now. I'll be fine once the coffee kicks in.

Isn’t it possible that JE was a vain little rich manchild who, when faced with actual consequences for his actions, talked himself into a suicidal depression? And that he succeeded not because of some complex conspiracy, but because of the inherent fuck-up-ed-ness of the carcereal system? (Shit practices, shit employees, utterly without care for those in its care?)

I admit, my description of things is lengthy and depends on widespread venality.

Finally other people started noticing.

"Each decade in the 20th century eventually developed a defined identity. And usually, a 20-year buffer provided a lens through which we gained perspective on the period. That was reflected on TV—Happy Days, The Wonder Years, and That '70s Show all debuted 20 years after the decade they depicted. You could have a '70s theme party in the '90s because life was drastically, hilariously different. That's no longer true."

Disagree, respectfully. Note that we happily putter about in a 2013 Transit Connect, the Pacer of the 2010’s.

But last night my sister’s 2023 Blazer (rental) was parked immediately in front of a 2001-08 Trailbllazer. Ho-leee crap are those front ends distinct. I had no idea.

The author of the article may be aging in ways they don’t fully understand. Or just doing their job of generating clicks by being reactionary.

And acting under its own authority, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission could approve the right-of-way for a power line located within a national interest corridor, overriding the objections of state officials if necessary."

Atlassian is so bad at UX that it boggles the mind that they're still in business. Jira is a monster that requires infinite patience to try to wrangle into submission. I hate every moment I spend in that tool.

Benhm3,
@Benhm3@mastodon.social avatar

@veronica

Oh dear god I’m so glad to hear someone else say this.

It blows my mind that Jira’s childlike 3 tier hierarchy is sold and believed to be a serious system-of-record.

I find all their products to be the “shoebox version of record keeping.”

Benhm3,
@Benhm3@mastodon.social avatar

@veronica

I hate to say ServiceNow is “better” than everything Atlassian has ever made…

Its UX is not for the faint of heart. Nor are the prices. But it is a serious ITSM product that has modules for damned near everything.

The trick is to NOT “leave it to the users” and train train train.

The Myth of Drug Expiration Dates

Hospitals and pharmacies are required to toss expired drugs, no matter how expensive or vital. Meanwhile the FDA has long known that many remain safe and potent for years longer. https://www.propublica.org/article/the-myth-of-drug-expiration-dates

The US Army did a big study on this. They found very specific values for efficacy. What I loved was they did a big test on albuterol rescue inhalers (asthma). I think they found +3 yrs past expiry.

But as pointed out earlier, cool, dry, and dark are the keys.

My dad's paid long-term care insurance premiums for 4 decades. Now he needs them, they and their outsourced inspectors find curiously no need to pay for help to a guy who can't remember to put on/pull up his pull-ups every day.

Don't bother. Bank the money in some index fund, instruct your heirs or trust to pay out of that when the time comes. Or sell it all then rely on the state.

But fuck those insurers, they exist to fuck the insured.
