I have threads silenced on Infosec.exchange, .town, and fedia.social. That means people here won’t see stuff from threads, but you have the option to follow and interact or outright block the threads instance.

There are some, though, that are hyper opposed and not finding that to be sufficient. Hypothetically speaking, if I were to create another instance that did hard block threads (activitypub, DNS, firewall, etc), would what would be the type of instance would you like to see?

@jerry @howelloneill " I pisses everyone off, but mostly just a little."

This is often what our group tries to achieve - our saying is that we endeavor to treat everyone with equal disrespect.

    @GossiTheDog new phrase: Top Level Dumb. TLD.

    I think the real world test of "should we use AI to do $FOO" is less "can AI do $FOO perfectly" and more "Can AI do $FOO as well as the human being you have access to and can pay a reasonable amount to do $FOO" (ignoring the fact that an AI will be comically cheaper than paying a human in most cases) and the answer in almost every case is "I can ask the AI to do $FOO now and get an answer in ten seconds, or I can try to find/hire a human to do $FOO which will take days or weeks..."

    And then maybe you end up hiring a person at some point if you do $FOO enough or run into "we need someone who knows $FOO better than the AI" but I'm betting a lot of use cases will just stick with AI.

    People will argue that AI lacks the human artisanal touch, the warmth, the creativity, but the reality is most work doesn't require that (e.g. fast food hamburgers, TPS reports) and good enough would be.

    I can't afford to hire a good chess coach, but I can apparently make OpenAI do a GPT persona that will help teach me chess and improve my weak spots.

    I have no idea what this means for the middle class, but I suspect it's not good.

    Cjust,
    @Cjust@noc.social avatar

    @kurtseifried we need to have some quality benchmarks for expected outcomes of AI.

    I suggest that we call it the $FOO Bar.

    Cyber Threat intelligence is such a wild industry. In regular intelligence the government has near total monopoly and everything is classified at TS/SCI. Whereas in CTI it'll just be some dude named Brad who got really baked one night and yolo'd his way into a major APT's backend server.

    I partially solved an Infosec mystery recently. The mystery is “why do most incidents always happen on a Friday? And especially the Friday before a long weekend?”

    Well friends, after a lot of empirical data gathering I can announce that it’s because people who realized something was wrong had been sitting on the knowledge of something being wrong, but didn’t want to let it sit through a weekend, and especially not a long weekend.

    So like that last push to production on the way out the door Friday afternoon, people are often submitting incident reports as they take off for the weekend with a clear conscience and a spring in their step.

    Many people are surprised to learn that weak cryptography systems (including any systems of any ostensible strength with mandated or other backdoors) are vastly more dangerous than using NO cryptography at all.

    Why? Because if someone is lulled into complacency and passes their private information through a compromised system as defined above, it becomes vulnerable to criminal and/or illicit government abuse.

    On the other hand, if you KNOW that a communications channel is not encrypted, you know what the limits are about what you should or should not pass through that channel.

    Interesting, eh?

    Does Mitch McConnell have a family? Does anyone love him enough to talk with him about... the finite nature of life. The preciousness of hours, minutes seconds?

    How from dust we all have come and to dust we shall all return?

    He could be petting some kittens. Listening to the sound of a child's laugh-- Dude really wants to die in front of us holding a pen mid-way through signing a bill that forces orphans to work in coal mines or something.

    @futurebird can't have heartwarming feelgood stories about folks raising money to prevent orphans from being crushed in the orphan crushing machine if you don't have folks penning into law the mandate to use these machines.
