After a long slog, I've finished an initial test of this idea: a few of the longest rivers (depending on how you measure) in Michigan, modeled after the comparisons that were popular in the 19th century (e.g. https://www.loc.gov/resource/g3200m.gcw0013960/?sp=6&loclr=blogmap). When time/energy allow, will do more later. Your feedback is welcome! See this thread for a few bits of context, highlights, and some detail images.

Belgium’s Mapper of the Month is @joost_schouppe.

If the name sounds familiar to you, it might be for many reasons. It could be for his past involvement as OpenStreetMap Foundation board member, for leading the Belgian community chapter, or being a very active mapper.

Read the interview at https://openstreetmap.be/en/motm/2023/08/01/joost-schouppe.html.

Last year at It was really nice how people were customizing their name badges to say more details about themselves, languages they spoke, country they were from, etc...
Makes it so much easier to talk to people and know WHO someone is when you've never seen their face before.
So for I figured it'd make one beforehand.
I encourage others to make something like this as well, even if it's hand drawn or something. (recommend laminating it, taping it or something, though)

@thibaultmol Suggestion: add your profile picture. Sounds strange, I realize, but I’m often very familiar with someone’s profile picture but at doubt if it’s really them when I see them in real for the first time (even more if they use an avatar as profile picture and go by a nickname online).

Not clear yet what the concrete benefits are, but it’s worth noting #OpenStreetMap has been registered as a “Digital Public Good” by the Digital Public Goods Alliance (#DPGA), which is a multi-stakeholder United Nations-endorsed initiative.

how hard is it to get a complete map of EV chargers?
Apparently very hard.

Around my apartment building there are 2 chargers. 1 of them has been here a few years (Allego), the other was installed last year (Vattenfall). But some map apps show one but not the other and vice versa.

is aware of both of them though, but that app doesn’t show the costs.

A screenshot of another EV charge map app that can show the location and costs of the Allego charger, and through Apple Maps accidentally the location of the Vattenfall charger without the costs information.

I'll install debian on it. UK keyboard (so no apple). ~14 in screen. I'd prefer smaller & compacter, to powerful. But shouldn't be too slow. Relatively high budget.

@amapanda @mtmail On the other hand, the “On the ground rule” has a clause about obvious mistakes(*): “exception to this could be obvious misspellings on signs like John-F.-Kennwdy Square.” Applied to this case, a visitor will easily notice the error. An armchair mapper will easily notice the error as well. If memory serves well, Osmose or Keepright give a warning for POI whose address have no such named highway in the surroundings.

Question for the community:

I have hundreds of POIs to upload to OSM. Most of those will be newly created, but some already exist.

What is the easiest method to do this semi manual work?
My thoughts: I'd like to generate links to iD with the map location and tags prefilled, so I can just check it's all good and validate, but I can't find how to do that?

Pinging @Doudouosm for reach (or if you have any ideas) 😃

Doudouosm,
@Doudouosm@en.osm.town avatar

@grlodi Indeed, I was going to suggest a MapRoulette challenge to complete or improve the data. It would help to know the details of your project to help more specifically, but this Wiki project of a past project in my area could already help give ideas for an approach on how to import nodes with a first set of data: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Import/Catalogue/ibpt_belgium_antennas. If talking of hundreds of nodes to be created, it’s worth also checking if this work would qualify as an import.

I was asked on a compliance questionnaire today if we process data with "innovative technology". It was like they wanted to say AI but also wanted the question to stand the test of time. So they made it even more vague. Now the Next Big Innovative Thing is also in scope.

I hope we're all more secure for this forward thinking.

Doudouosm,

@markstos In EU, it’s probably related to GDPR art. 35: “Where a type of processing in particular using new technologies (…) is likely to result in a high risk (…), the controller shall (…) carry out an assessment (…).”

Interesting paper from about “Mapping with ” concludes it delivers unique advantages, such as:

  • lowering the barrier to producing maps
  • boosting the efficiency of massive map production
  • and understanding geographical space with its spatial thinking capability.

Limitations cited are:

  • its unequal benefits for different users (need to have some expertise already)
  • and necessary user intervention for quality control.

I'm really starting to get into editing and now have the desire to organize an editing event in which one or two people are boots on the ground, livestreaming their perspective walking around an area in a Discord call while others are editing and adding features to the map as they are reported from the people walking around.

Seems like the best way to get pedestrian amenities - stairs, benches, bins, emergency phones, bike parking, etc - effectively and accurately.
