As educators and scientists, we can and should communicate clearly that generative AI tools are not sentient, have no capacity for truth, and are merely complex statistical algorithms dressed up in a plain language outfit.

Sure this will be talked about for a while, but history was made today. And, I’m hopeful, justice prevailed. Here’s how it was reported by my local paper. https://wapo.st/3KoMJh8

Overnight print is off to a solid start. I haven't done one this big in a while and I'm excited to see how goes the gradient filament. Also, the estimates for how long this print will take are crazy. Maybe it will still be running at 18:00 tomorrow?? That's not what Cura said. But we shall see!

Second reservoir done. I think I'll use white for the inner pot. I love how the color transitions turned out with these two!

This morning, I took my friend (I’ll call her Mozart, since she’s a musician) to the clinic and pharmacy. Her mobility is super challenging these days and she has almost zero strength. It took 3 of us to help her navigate the stairs. She remains chatty and positive and I focused on being supportive and practical. I’ll help her request a handicapped placard later today so we don’t have to park illegally again. Also, f*%# … I am so worried for her.

My neighbor and friend was diagnosed with multiple myeloma (bone cancer). She is in good spirits and says “it’s very treatable”. This is true, but it’s also terminal and at stage 3 (which hers clearly is) has only a 30% 2-year survival rate. Her docs have not told her this and maybe that’s for the best, but the scientist in me is screaming inside that she should have more and all the information so she can make decisions about her care. /sigh/ I will focus on being her friend.

I miss the days when buying software meant you could use it without being connected to the internet or logging in.

Tonight, I bought a new dress and shoes for the teaching awards ceremony next Monday. I was tempted by a pair of gold Sam Edelman heels, but opted for sparkly sneakers instead. The DKNY dress has short sleeves so my ink will be out and it is like nothing I would normally wear to work. Tomorrow, my mom arrives for the weekend and to attend the ceremony. Life is feeling a bit surreal these days.

We had a super fun (surprisingly tiring) afternoon watching the #eclipse. The big zoom lens, telescope, and solar filters worked great. Neighbors came out and we watched the sun spots get covered up. The telescope had enough detail to see the craggily edges of the moon. Milli enjoyed the sun and observed some diffraction from inside. One neighbor said “you have the coolest gizmos on the block!” All things considered, it was a lovely experience, no regrets. #Astronomy #Astro #Eclipse2024

About 1/3 of the sun is being blocked by the moon, photo shot with 600mm lens and solar filter, dark sun spots are visible in a couple of places
Outdoor scene in a neighborhood, silver cylindrical telescope mounted on a tripod sits in the grass, blue sky with white clouds above, a large tree is on the left and a row of houses is on the right
Milli, a small grey cat, walks on a beige carpet in the sun from a window, small crescent moons are visible where the blinds have diffracted the light from the eclipsed sun

TIL there’s a comet currently visible in the night sky. Also, I don’t have to wait for the monthly astronomy event at my local dark sky park. They have a space for observation every night! Time to resume my hunt.

Good Monday morning, friends.

I have a meeting in 10 min about my annual performance review; I don't have any reason to be nervous, but I am.

It's opening day at Nationals Park. I'm hopeful the rain will take a break for the afternoon game. Excited to watch some baseball today! ⚾ 💞

I hope you find a pocket full of joy today.

Mulched the front beds and oak barrels. Gave the clematis more lattice to climb. Can’t decide where to put my sundial this year. Seeing my perennials come back after winter gives me hope.

“The idea that women can exist apart from men, that they can have lives and thoughts and preoccupations that do not center on men, is not only difficult to conceive of from within a patriarchal culture—it’s threatening. It strikes right to the heart of male hegemony.”

Tonight I hosted a screening and discussion of “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks”. Everything worked technically and there was a good audience. I am very grateful for my chemistry students who came and contributed to the conversation.

Even if you don’t know Henrietta’s story, you’ve probably benefited from her cells. You can read the excellent book (by the same name) or this: https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/henrietta-lacks.

I woke before my alarm. Today I have 2 difficult conversations this morning, class at 12, then daughter’s state wrestling tournament until 9pm. At some point, I guess I’ll eat a meal? Carrying grief around like a too heavy backpack. I also knew it was cloudy before opening my eyes, stupid sinuses. Happy Friday, friends.

5 days till spring semester starts and I definitely have a cold. Looks like the viruses going around my daughter’s school have found some traction at home. We are all less than well today. Time for a test.
