As educators and scientists, we can and should communicate clearly that generative AI tools are not sentient, have no capacity for truth, and are merely complex statistical algorithms dressed up in a plain language outfit.

Sure this will be talked about for a while, but history was made today. And, I’m hopeful, justice prevailed. Here’s how it was reported by my local paper. https://wapo.st/3KoMJh8

Important poll for everyone -

I've done this before, but I need to ask again - favorite goose.

Vote now!

@mdmrn my vote is heavily inspired by Mary Oliver who wrote, “You do not have to be good.”

Oh mighty Hive Mind, I seek your wisdom. I use Windows on a fairly new computer. I'm getting "insufficient memory" error messages. But there is lots of memory. Why is everything going into the very red OS section and not the very empty D section? What can I do to be rid of the 'insufficient memory' problems?
(And will this solution let me continue using things without new extra steps?)
UPDATE: Moving the photo folder into D did the trick (screenshot in reply). Thanks all!!

DrFerrous,
@DrFerrous@hachyderm.io avatar

@AskPippa hm… it’s likely that all your programs and files are being stored on the C: drive, which is normal and the default. I recommend reorganizing and moving large folders over to the D: drive and then deleting from C. You probably can’t move any programs but photos, videos, etc can be moved and then later accessed from D. When you open or save files in the future, just use D. Does this help?

Overnight print is off to a solid start. I haven't done one this big in a while and I'm excited to see how goes the gradient filament. Also, the estimates for how long this print will take are crazy. Maybe it will still be running at 18:00 tomorrow?? That's not what Cura said. But we shall see!

DrFerrous,
@DrFerrous@hachyderm.io avatar

@pbl0m @suvidu yes! I am using octoprint and the estimates are just insane. Checked this morning and the job is nearly done.

I've used for my day-to-day work for a good 35yrs. I've had a couple of brief clusters of years where I had to use a Windows at work (but still had MacOS at home).

I've installed on many old machines to extend their lives a bit, sorting through distros, finding one that would work on limited resources with good results. Fun stuff.

But I'm curious to ask a QUESTION about new computer purchases…

DrFerrous,
@DrFerrous@hachyderm.io avatar

@ottaross I’ve been thinking about this too. Might get a Linux laptop myself.

The author’s direct observations at USC, backed up by national study: “With few exceptions, the encampments have been overwhelmingly peaceful, well-organized microsocieties.” “The image of a lawless, violent, antisemitic pro-Palestinian mob stands completely at odds with the reality.”

But people •were• violence at USC. Who?

DrFerrous,
@DrFerrous@hachyderm.io avatar

@inthehands similar story at my university. There were regular demonstrations/protests since January with no major fanfare or disruption.

DrFerrous,
@DrFerrous@hachyderm.io avatar

@bikepedantic I’ve written two “cease and desist” emails to individuals with whom I no longer wanted be in contact. Those were well-crafted daggers. I also wrote an email to counter my promotion salary offer… I ended up with a significantly larger raise.

@rasterweb day 4 of my staycation, more #3DPrinting, baking banana bread, laundry, and I may attempt to organize the chaos table in the kitchen. Oh! And I get to meet with my tattoo artist for a design preview! That’s something more fun haha.

@rasterweb yep, not work.

Zelda goddess statues; I’m putting them in my garden and making one for a friend.

I’m debating if I want to put cranberries and carrots in the banana bread. Walnuts will be included as usual. What do you think?

I really hate how journal spam now sends emails high priority and also they send follow-ups when you ignore them. 😭 AND it’s like the one thing that Outlook doesn’t decide to quarantine…

Also the field is almost always waaaaaay off. I guess this is just a (huge) numbers game??

DrFerrous,
@DrFerrous@hachyderm.io avatar

@cfiesler yeah, I get these too… they are definitely more abundant and certainly annoying. The invites for random conferences have also been increasing. Maybe it as a sign that we’ve “made it” and even the spammers see us as serious/respectable academics? 🤣

What other disciplines have an extremely strong set of visual icons and imagery like neuroscience? I assume "all," but eg. In neuro we have

the sagittal human brain shape,
the 2d blobby neuron (usually pyramidal-ish with projections ~1-2x body diameter),
graphs/networks (ok this is lots of things but ours usually have visible/larger than average nodes)
For icons, for visual style we have the cajal sepia/black monochrome... etc.

Definitely my bias but its easier for me to imagine a neuron icon than like an earthquake or metaphysics icon. I also wonder whose iconography would be the most illegible to ppl outside it (and why is it going to be number theory)?

DrFerrous,
@DrFerrous@hachyderm.io avatar

@jonny how about chemistry? beakers, flasks, test tubes, goggles… none are exclusive to chemistry, but they are all commonly used icons that represent it.

This morning, I took my friend (I’ll call her Mozart, since she’s a musician) to the clinic and pharmacy. Her mobility is super challenging these days and she has almost zero strength. It took 3 of us to help her navigate the stairs. She remains chatty and positive and I focused on being supportive and practical. I’ll help her request a handicapped placard later today so we don’t have to park illegally again. Also, f*%# … I am so worried for her.

My neighbor and friend was diagnosed with multiple myeloma (bone cancer). She is in good spirits and says “it’s very treatable”. This is true, but it’s also terminal and at stage 3 (which hers clearly is) has only a 30% 2-year survival rate. Her docs have not told her this and maybe that’s for the best, but the scientist in me is screaming inside that she should have more and all the information so she can make decisions about her care. /sigh/ I will focus on being her friend.

DrFerrous,
@DrFerrous@hachyderm.io avatar

@purplepadma I agree. I’m trying to be hopeful that she will come to a better understanding of what is happening, but she seems to prefer to just “do what the doctor’s want”. I don’t understand.

Just received this piece of #JWST memorabilia through the post from an ESA colleague (thanks, kainoeske@x.com 🙇‍♂️).

It has a Northrop Grumman logo, is tightly packed, & says “XL” on the side, so I’m hoping it might be a flight spare sunshield 🤞

I’m afraid to open it though, as my living room isn’t quite as big as a tennis court 🤪
