Prof. @davekarpf gives Marc Andreessen's freshman writing seminar essay thorough feedback:

Why can't our tech billionaires learn anything new?https://open.substack.com/pub/davekarpf/p/why-cant-our-tech-billionaires-learn?r=evw8&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web

@jeffjarvis @davekarpf First thing of which this reminded me: All the Nobel prize winners who won for something they did in their 20s, then spent the rest of their lives Being The Expert.

It is possible he was an iconoclast or a maverick when he was younger. Now of course, he's not Sticking it to the Man. He is The Man.

    Now that Monday has been cast out, here are 2 books to help exorcise other evils. One supposes that "demons" are really aliens and we should seek to communicate, rather than expel them. The other seems to presume that only women can be demon-possessed. Maybe that's why Stephen King's famous fictional Fury was "Christine", instead of Carson.

    someone told me today that young people can't afford homes because we spend all our money on "toys like boats and ATVs" and now I am desperate to meet the one Millennial Hell-Child commuting from their basement apartment in a speedboat and giving us all a bad name

    Grizzlysgrowls,
    @Grizzlysgrowls@twit.social avatar

    @AbandonedAmerica @VeryBadLlama I listen to a number of podcasts from financial pundits, and while I don't agree with them on everything, they say the reasons people aren't buying houses are high prices, low supply, and high interest rates.

    Not a lot of frivolous millenials in that bunch -- though it's likely some own boats and ATVs.

    @Grizzlysgrowls@twit.social avatar

    @AbandonedAmerica @VeryBadLlama I was puzzling over why the disinformation folks do what they do the other day. Came down to a critter I could call an "Attention Mosquito" or "Attention Leech." EDIT: "Attention Tick."

    They push lies, not because they believe any of it, but rather because they need attention and are of no interest on their own. They grab for importance by getting people with trusted opinions to respond to them. Then the response is the news, and their name is attached.

    Y'all remember the Wild West that was the early internet? So, after Napster got shut down, file sharing didn't stop, you know what it did? That's right kids, let's say it all together: DECENTRALIZED! This protected those sites from being sued and shut down. It's interesting to once again be moving around in decentralized networks again 20+ years later. The past and the future are colliding in such interesting ways.

    For that matter, since these actually -aren't- BBSes or constrained by doors... Maybe a federated version of the online Diplomacy? I liked TT Diplomacy, and the online system tempted me, but I never quite did it.

    In any case, the same -sorts- of games with a bit more modern tech and ActivityPub use, that'd be interesting.

    I think there's some confusion between Mother-in-law the lady, and mother-in-law the apartment (usually).

    Grizzlysgrowls,
    @Grizzlysgrowls@twit.social avatar

    @philip_cardella @derpoltergeist @wordstitcher @hawksquill @bookstodon Yup. US (I think) it's a mother-in-law something-or-other, not by itself. Sometimes apartment, sometimes a small house. Anyway, I guessed from the comments about missing words.

    Grizzlysgrowls,
    @Grizzlysgrowls@twit.social avatar

    @philip_cardella @ukaunz @bookstodon @derpoltergeist @wordstitcher @hawksquill A while ago I'd heard about a zoning concept in California of an ADU (Auxilliary Dwelling Unit). Basically it's a rule that allows an add-on residence that can be a tiny house, as long as it meets some standards and it's in addition to a "regular" residence.

    Grizzlysgrowls,
    @Grizzlysgrowls@twit.social avatar

    @ukaunz @bookstodon @derpoltergeist @philip_cardella @wordstitcher @hawksquill I have always heard the term referring to an apartment within the house, sometimes an apartment over a garage.

    @jwilker @bookstodon I think the reason Amazon has (only) two of my podcast books is they're grabbing them from , who bought Podiobooks.com. And most of my Podiobooks didn't have me as Author, because I wasn't, I was the Narrator. Oh, well. The rest are still on my podcast website, if you dig back a few years.

    @eivind @bookstodon It's seemed to me for a long time that Europeanization is really Romanization.

    Europe has been perpetuating the errors of Rome since they first saw them. Rome -is- civilization, to Europe, and to America. We are still making their mistakes.
