Eugen Rochko recently posted a thought:
"I think it comes down to, AI has no place in the arts. Machine-generated art has the appearance of what it is emulating, but no substance. Like cake made entirely of fondant. Or cardboard."

'Aiono' replied: "Also even if it could, like why would you automate one of the most entertaining part of being a human?"

Replace 'art' with 'writing'.

Right!

Happy writing,
Roger

@paul_ipv6 @creative_xl8 @RogerRemacle @bookstodon I've heard the reason Jerry Lewis was a big celebrity in France was he has a really gifted fella playing him in the French voiceovers.

Voice recognition mistake of the day: "Itchy tentacle back?"
(Is she tempted to go back?) Now I'm getting creepy crawlies up my spine. Is there a cream for this?

@KrisBock @bookstodon I would suggest Bailey's Irish Cream. Might need a lot.

@NeurodivergentBC @actuallyautistic @allautistics @neurodivergent @academicchatter @edutooters I don't fault universities for being what they are. I could not convince myself to go to a college after years of abrasion from high school.

At the time college was the "normal" next step, and intellectually college would have been good for me, but I just couldn't stand being around all those noisy people. Went to vocational school, but it wasn't better, and I didn't finish that.

My spouse watched and it made me realize how ridiculous the trope of projecting broadcasts on the side of tall buildings is. Imagine like you're trying to catch a nap before your shift in the button pressing factory and some politician is droning on while using your bedroom window as a loudspeaker. You/i would absolutely riot.

Grizzlysgrowls,
@Grizzlysgrowls@twit.social avatar

@kitoconnell Actually goes back to Edward Bellamy and "Looking Backwards," where they'd display that stuff on the sky.

Been a minute since I read that.

i find nice smells comforting so I let my parasocial relationship with a YouTuber convince me to sign up for . Of the ones I've received so far:

Michael Germain—Sexual Steel, wonderful warm old fashioned scent, cringe name that will make you come up with creative answers to "what scent are you wearing?" I'd buy it again and just say "Something by Michael Germain, I forget the name. Sex panther maybe,"

Mémoire—Cabin Retreat, the sandalwood notes make it a little more floral, less woody than expected. Still deciding if I like this one. At least I can say "Cabin retreat" with a straight face.

Grizzlysgrowls,
@Grizzlysgrowls@twit.social avatar

@kitoconnell I suspect it was called "Sexual Steel" because repurposing "Blue Steel" would have been too obvious. And Ben Stiller declined to do the ads.

Grizzlysgrowls,
@Grizzlysgrowls@twit.social avatar

@kitoconnell I had to go Google it, had a vague mental image but couldn't remember details. Anchorman had a reference, too? Never saw that...

Grizzlysgrowls,

@kitoconnell And now you need one that smells of leatherbound books.

Helen50, to books

when do you abandon a book?
I'm not very good at it, but I might be about to do it again.
@bookstodon

Grizzlysgrowls,
@Grizzlysgrowls@twit.social avatar

@ericsfraga @Rhube @bookstodon @Helen50 I read on one of my Kindles, for various reasons. One of the upsides, if I "abandon" a book I don't like, there isn't a half-read book sitting there giving me bad looks. Gone is gone.

Grizzlysgrowls,
@Grizzlysgrowls@twit.social avatar

@jd @ericsfraga @Helen50 @bookstodon @Rhube I am likewise impacted by book length, but I am more likely to take a longer series. At the library I'd grab that big SF book before the small one.

Getting my money's worth? Maybe once I immerse myself, I want a longer swim. But if it's a -bad- long book, I can dump it as easily, especially from my Kindle.

@izzyamar @pluralistic (chuckle) I am of an age where that can't be ruled out. Another Old Guy aspect: "Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom" is getting to be a rather old book.

A question prompted by "Crime Wave at Blandings", the first story in "Lord Emsworth and Others, which I currently . PGW has Lord Emsworth saying "dooce" a lot. In my quasi-literate ignorance, that seems like an Americanism, the sort of thing PGW might have picked from living there. Would a very English Earl of the era have said "deuce" as "dooce" , or would he have been more like to say /djuːs/ ? @bookstodon

Grizzlysgrowls,
@Grizzlysgrowls@twit.social avatar

@ronsboy67 @ancientsounds @bookstodon Was fascinated hearing about first close looks at Sanskrit, and finding in it the roots of many of the European languages. Do love me some history!

Grizzlysgrowls,
@Grizzlysgrowls@twit.social avatar

@ancientsounds @ronsboy67 @bookstodon I'll buy that -- the examination that led to the discovery were a very long time after that "proto-" stage.

The Collapse of Complex Societies

Political disintegration is a persistent feature of world history. The Collapse of Complex Societies, though written by an archaeologist, will therefore strike a chord throughout the social sciences. Any explanation of societal collapse carries lessons not just for the study of ancient societies, but for the members of all such societies in both the present and future.

@curmudgeonaf @appassionato @bookstodon So who would be the tragic version?

Grizzlysgrowls,
@Grizzlysgrowls@twit.social avatar

@curmudgeonaf @appassionato @bookstodon That's an interesting perspective. So the conquering and enslaving was by accident?

Grizzlysgrowls,
@Grizzlysgrowls@twit.social avatar

@SusanHR @curmudgeonaf @appassionato @bookstodon Well I'm out. Don't like olives. 🙂

Grizzlysgrowls,
@Grizzlysgrowls@twit.social avatar

@SusanHR @curmudgeonaf @appassionato @bookstodon I don't mind olives on pizza. But then we're back to the Romans. Actually the Neapolitans came up with what we call pizza in the US.

Grizzlysgrowls,
@Grizzlysgrowls@twit.social avatar

@mutinyc @curmudgeonaf @appassionato @bookstodon For my part, it is not an apologetic for anybody's slaving. As I've said elsewhen, it's a shame how European society kept repeating the Roman's mistakes. Europe learned "civilization" from Rome, and Rome (a) conquered and (b) enslaved, so That's How Civilization Is Done.

Grizzlysgrowls,
@Grizzlysgrowls@twit.social avatar

@mutinyc @curmudgeonaf @appassionato @bookstodon One evil of Rome was proliferation of money lenders. Most who ended up hating Rome hated the debt.

Julius Ceasar was appointed governor of a small patch of Gaul, and only that. But he was in debt, so he started invading the rest of Gaul, destroying the armies and sending the rest back to Rome to sell as slaves. To pay his debts.

Grizzlysgrowls,
@Grizzlysgrowls@twit.social avatar

@mutinyc @curmudgeonaf @appassionato @bookstodon Speaking of the charming and loving Romans, I'm listening to a podast episode about Boudica at the moment:

Book 2: “Cat Burglar Black” by #RichardSala.

I saw some of his art online and thought it looked like “Invisible Hands” from Liquid Television, which I LOVED. Same artist! This didn’t have quite the same level of twisted, creepiness as that animated series, but I was so happy to find his work in comic form. There’s more too.

Someone stitched together all the “#InvisibleHands”. The voice acting is 🤌🏽 https://youtu.be/n5sP4yRb8Mw

Panel 1, someone in bed, their head covered in bandages, eyes staring and teeth bared. A weak whisper: "Come closer, Katherine. Let me see you..." Panel 2 a severe looking older woman with her hands around the shoulders of a tentative, white-haired teen: "Don't be shy. Say hello to your aunt."

@patl @bookstodon @ottsatwork I just got the first 4 of the Spiral series. My KU is now full, and I'd have to drop books I haven't read yet to get more. I'll consider it later.
