We need a very long, compound German word for the feeling here on the of missing a particular account from previous-decade social media enclosures.

You wish they moved over, and miss them dearly, but deep inside you know it's not going to happen.

The mute feature is such a nice gentle response to someone who is posting daily about their commercial services on writing hashtags. Farewell, overzealous promoter, farewell.

HartleyJames,

@alan

On the other hand, there is the block option for those that behave like self-righteous dicks.

Used it once so far here.

Multiple times elsewhere.

  • HartleyJames,

    @jynersolives But then you can still block them too.

    Also wonderful.

    likewise, to books

    When you find something in life that you love doing, make the time to do it. There are lots of things we like, but not quite so many that we love— it’s these things which are most important, because they shape the very core of who we are.

    Reading is mine.

    HartleyJames,

    @likewise @bookstodon Reading used to be mine, but then I acquired an internal editor.

    TBH, I haven't done Goodreads for a long time. Not since they were bought, anyway.

    You steal one person’s labour and they call you a criminal. You steal everyone’s labour and they call you AI.

    HartleyJames,

    @aral Steal from a writer, and you are called a Pay in Exposure Market.

    People in security and computing have been saying for years - there's no cloud. There's just someone else's computer.

    Right now, there's no AI. There's just someone else's work.

    Stop calling generative text and image programs AI. It's inaccurate and insulting. They are just the evolution of corporate creative theft that's been going on as long as media corporations have existed.

    HartleyJames,

    @ianrosewrites I repeat.

    We should rename it ASS (Artificial Stealing Software)

    Another magazine doing the get money shill.

    Awards: First Prize is $1,500, Second Prize is $750, Third Prize is $300, and up to ten finalists will receive $75 each. All entries will be considered for publication.

    Submission Fee: There is a $25 fee for each entry. With your entry, you’ll receive three months of complimentary access to **** (basically a blog)

    So 3.3k prizes. 1k or so entries. Do the sums.

    Gif of RDJ wiping hand across forehead.

    HartleyJames,

    Oh, and you can enter as many times as you want, but each entry must be accompanied by a $25 fee.

    HartleyJames,

    @oblomov Oh yes. That too.

    USA, USA, USA.

    Contract signed and sent off.

    The piece won't be appearing till next year, but the payment, though semi-pro is still 3c a word with the possibility of a further reprint fee down the track. So not too bad.

    HartleyJames,

    @BradRubenstein A worthy thought, but I did that one knowingly for the love.

    HartleyJames, to random

    Just submitted to a poetry mag.

    Now, here's the thing. They say they don't allow simsubs and that they may or may not respond after sixty days.

    Is this not utter entitlement? Does this not belittle the writer?

    I've submitted, but it has left a bad taste in my mouth. At least they didn't charge a fee.

    HartleyJames,

    @benjaminhollon Simsubs are your friend.

    HartleyJames,

    @benjaminhollon Yeah.

    Oh, I have form rejections coming in from some of them at around 350 days. It's a bit of a joke really.

    Stolen but true!

    Writers across all media: STOP WORKING FOR FREE. Your desire to be published that makes you give your work away devalues every writer’s work and continues to perpetuate this myth that writing should be done “for the love.” For the love doesn’t pay the damn rent. You need your work seen and don’t care about pay? Self publish and keep ownership. But every writer giving their work away for free hits the writers struggling to pay their bills.

    @allisonwyss Have you ever covered the question of how much a writer should remind readers of previous incidents? It’s a delicate balance. You don’t want to over explain and draw conclusions, but I’ve also been very thankful when the narrator recalls an earlier episode that’s pertinent.

    How much can we expect readers to maintain?

    HartleyJames,

    @Ashton @allisonwyss @orionkidder @colorblindcowboy

    What's a protagonist? Is that the same as protag...?

    HartleyJames,
    HartleyJames,

    @crcollins @Ashton @allisonwyss @orionkidder @colorblindcowboy

    And a followup question. What if your antag is a cabal? Is it multi, or one?

    Again, not really a serious question. Just food for analytical thought.

    A friend asked this on her #author page, and I thought I’d steal the idea. Do you collect anything besides books?

    For me, it’s Loungefly bags, Disney cats, Disney pins, and model horses.

    How about you?

    HartleyJames,

    How many times a week do you look at the guidelines for an anthology and say to yourself "Nah, not writing for that?"

    I am finding it more and more often.

    Particularly after I look at the pay rates.

    I mean really, there are so many bullshit anthos out there. Why be a part of them?

    HartleyJames,

    @sharonecathcart Yep. It's made worse by the whole self-pub capabilty. Everyone thinks they're an editor.

    Also, too many people desperate to see their name in print no matter that it might be dross.
