Welcome to Autumn 2023 Day 02, 1 Sep, Bruxelles - Paris - Morlaix - Roscoff, onto ferry

Today I’m crossing these borders

@jon probably same reason why the are border controls on trains but not on roads.
If you are on a car, you are a redirected member of society; if you're not, you're intently suspicious as a potential illegal migrant and terrorist.

I still cannot get over the wonder and mystery of what gall wasps can do to plants. This is bio-engineering! The wasp lays her egg and somehow the plant makes a structure that is not a fruit, it is not a seed, it is not a leaf or stem. It's a wholly recombinant architecture customized to the needs of the growing young larva. The plant provides food and shelter-- It's like a cancer, but with a purpose.

How did it evolve? How is it done!?

IngaLovinde,

@olav @futurebird I don't understand, the opposite of domesticated figs would be wild figs, and the opposite of imported figs, local figs?
So how does one determine whether these figs in a grocery store have wasps in them or not?

IngaLovinde,
@IngaLovinde@embracing.space avatar

@futurebird @olav I understand that they're completely dissolved and that it's impossible to detect them. Still, the thought of eating something that might contain an animal is very offputting to me (I wouldn't go as far as to say that figs are definitely non-vegan, but still).

Sevilla (popn. 680000) - Huelva (popn. 144000)

117km by train, takes 90 mins

They built a new station in Huelva for high speed trains
https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estaci%C3%B3n_de_Huelva

But high speed hasn't come so far...

So what do they get meanwhile?

3
TRAINS

DAY

3 effing trains. That's it

Like what effing 💩 is that? Jeeeez.

IngaLovinde,

@alan @jon we had a tool for that in Russia; it was called: only releasing seat blocks for sales from intermediate stops gradually, in batches.
(Similar to Renfe: SNCF's two daily trains from Paris pass through Lyon (the largest city on the line, population 2.5m) without stopping. But there I guess it's dinner to save five minutes of travel time, so that it can stop every 15-20km at such exciting places as Sete (population 44k), Beziers (population 78k) and Agde (population 29k))

IngaLovinde,
@IngaLovinde@embracing.space avatar

@jon @alan and not only that, but e.g. going from Frankfurt to Barcelona not via Paris (and without crossing Paris to change stations): not only Frankfurt to Marseille direct TGV passes there after Paris to Barcelona TGVs already departed (so the overnight stay is needed), but they also travel on the same track for 250km (from just north of Lyon to just north of Avignon), have several stops there, but not a single shared one. Just... why

jon, to random
@jon@gruene.social avatar

Another reason why I 🤬 hate rail in Spain

Stupid and unclear booking horizons

My trip is Madrid Atocha - Sevilla - Huelva, 23 October

Tickets and times for Madrid - Sevilla are known, and indeed the cheap tickets for some trains are already sold out. But times are not known, and ticket sales not open, for Sevilla - Huelva.

What do I do? Book the first bit now, assume the Sevilla - Huelva timetable does not change, and book that second bit later? 🤔

IngaLovinde,
@IngaLovinde@embracing.space avatar

@jon today I've looked into Barcelona-Malaga after October 16th, and it has connections, but only some (two high-speed plus one slow per day). No connections departing Barcelona after 12:00.
Tickets for individual trains Barcelona-Madrid and Madrid-Malaga can be booked just fine; times are known and sales are open and cheaper tickets are sold out already; but through tickets just aren't even listed.
I wonder what are the passenger rights for two separate tickets, if through ticket cannot be booked...

IngaLovinde,
@IngaLovinde@embracing.space avatar

@quixoticgeek @Squig @jon afaik China has this. They only open sales like two weeks in advance; and before that, you can reserve your place in the queue for free. The downside is that, of you want to book way in advance, you won't know if you actually get a ticket until two weeks before departure (although very likely you will), and that, if you want to buy at the last moment, they might be all sold out.

I look at myself, at my body, in the hotel mirror, and I try not to judge myself any more harshly than I would if this body belonged to anyone else. If I were looking at the photo of another woman, would I still think "what a fat, lazy slob"? Would I look down on her for always falling so easily onto her fast metabolism that she barely needed to pay attention to calorie intake, and now that she is nearly forty and all of a sudden that fast metabolism has betrayed her, she's rapidly gaining all the pounds she once ignored? I like to think not. I like to think that it is very easy to feel towards another, after I have worked (and continue to work) to unindoctrinate myself from the that my childhood and society have instilled in me. But it is so, so, so much harder to apply that same kindness to myself.

IngaLovinde,
@IngaLovinde@embracing.space avatar

@toplesstopics but also... on this photo your body looks pretty typical/average in terms of "pounds"? If that's ok to say so.
(I'm always surprised by how some men are eagerly accusing even women with far-below-average weight for "fatness" as if they imagine that an actual living woman should somehow not have a single gram of fat like all these photoshopped models on magazine covers or something...)

"Manifesting" has got to be the most annoying tiktock trend. "I have $40,000 in my bank account." over and over or "I am a successful real estate agent closing on my third house today..." "I own four luxury sports cars" etc.

The "theory" is that by pretending what you want has already happened you "attract" that future.

It's also a little sad how materialistic and limited some of the dream futures can be--

How big is a normal washcloth, the kind you'd use in the bathroom. Not how big do you like it to be... just how big would you expect it to be generally speaking?

IngaLovinde,
@IngaLovinde@embracing.space avatar

@futurebird do you mean towel? (This is what duckduckgo image search produces for "washcloth")
If it's for hands, then 40x90cm at least. If it's for body, then much larger.

IngaLovinde,
@IngaLovinde@embracing.space avatar

@BunRab @futurebird so... like a sponge?

IngaLovinde,
@IngaLovinde@embracing.space avatar

@BunRab @futurebird oh wait it's for face only, judging by the word you used? Or are facecloth and washcloth different things?

IngaLovinde,
@IngaLovinde@embracing.space avatar

@futurebird ah I see. Around here body towels are like 70140 or larger, hand cloth (used to dry one's hands after washing them, but typically not after full body washing because there is a body towel for that) are 4090 or larger, and we use sponges (typically with two different sides, rough one and soft-one) or luffas or luffa-like synthetic sheets (rougher than the typical rough sponge surface) for soaping the body.
Sponges are typically like 10x20cm and 5cm thick; luffas are 40cm long and 5cm in diameter; and synthetic sheet I'm currently using is like 30x70cm but it's thin and can be folded (and because it's really rough it doesn't slip against itself when folded), so half the time I'm using it when it's folded to be like 10x20cm and 1cm thick.
I've never heard of using a cotton towel-like thing to soap the body, this sounds reality weird and the thought makes me somewhat uncomfortable.

IngaLovinde,
@IngaLovinde@embracing.space avatar

@futurebird but... the towel is much more fussy than the rough surface of the sponge? Let alone luffa.
Like, you can only use it to spread soap on the skin, but not to actually scrub the dirt off it.
If I'd had to split the different methods into different categories according to gender stereotypes, I'd say that towels are the most stereotypically for women?
Or maybe we call different things sponges, too? This is what we call sponges here

IngaLovinde,
@IngaLovinde@embracing.space avatar

@futurebird so, luffas that sand your face off are considered to be girly and for fussy gentle women, while soaped towels are for brutal masculine men on frontier? Wow, stereotypes are weird.

veronica, to random
@veronica@mastodon.online avatar

Ah, the continues.

is a Swedish service many Scandinavian webshops use so you can get a proper bill instead of using your credit card.

It turns out they now:

  • Try to force you to install their app. Hell no.
  • No longer give you an invoice PDF.
  • Require you to log in with bank id, which is fine, but also demand to get your phone number. If you don't comply, you're logged out.
  • Do not allow you to contact support electronically without loging in.

Fuck you, Klarna.

IngaLovinde,
@IngaLovinde@embracing.space avatar

@veronica in Germany they require you to give them your username and password for internet banking so that (I guess) their server logs into your internet banking pretending to be you and then does the transfer, and you're supposed to hope that they didn't cache credentials anywhere or something, because these credentials give them full power to do anything (including e.g. changing the address your bank has on file for you).
I have no idea how this is even legal. I'm pretty sure a lot of banks have "never give your credentials to anybody except the bank website" in their terms and conditions, in which case Klarna requires users to violate rules of their bank (and lose all protection) as a main business scenario.
So, yes, fuck them.
