KatS

@KatS@chaosfem.tw

50-ish trans woman; aspiring ladylike dyke. At least as feline as the profile pic implies.

Alleged software developer and occasional musician, former and possibly future infrastructure engineer, goth (ever and always, body and soul).

AuDHD-type.

Far more politically-engaged than I'd prefer, and salty about the fact that it's been made necessary.
I'd prefer that my music and code be more of my identity, and that my gender be in the background with hair-colour and handedness, but here we are.

I miss crows. Crows are nice.

#Goth #CommonLisp #Bass

Profile picture: a charcoal sketch of a cat sitting on a tree-stump, looking away from the viewer.
The cat's head is tilted in a way that makes it look contemplative but, honestly, they probably just slipped a mental cog and now their brain is in some kind of phantom neutral.

I find it fascinating that we talk about over engineering as if it's a thing in software engineering. It's not, cut it out, stop talking about that.

If I'm a contractor and I over engineer something, guess what? It works for that use case and all the future ones. The only thing I wasted was money and time. Did you make a 10 ton capacity deck when you only need 2 tons? Cool... It's still a deck.

Software engineering? We don't have over engineering. We have "building to solve the wrong problem"

KatS,
@KatS@chaosfem.tw avatar

@hazelweakly Nicely said.

The one thing I disagree with is about YAGNI: it's part of identifying the shape of the problem.

KatS,
@KatS@chaosfem.tw avatar

@hazelweakly Fair: it's a design technique that's as easy to misuse as any other.

What I've learned to do is make sure the design allows for adding it later, while avoiding as much as possible of the actual implementation. It's been an effective way of deferring the maintenance burden until there's a concrete use-case that makes it worthwhile.

Interviewer: It looks like your previous job only lasted three months. Can you share why you left?

Me: Sure! All new employers are subject to a 90-day probationary period, during which they are evaluated to make sure they are a good fit with my personal culture and can perform their duties satisfactorily. Not all companies make it.

KatS,

@maxleibman Yes yes yes!
Probation goes both ways, and not enough people realise this.

I have an increasing hunch that blank nodes in are just a local minimum byproduct of ppl insisting that all names need to be globally unique, and if u relax that then u can avoid a lot of the graph isomorphism probs at the expense of having some mechanism of referring to nodes relative to one another

KatS,
@KatS@chaosfem.tw avatar

@jonny I think you're describing the reason I came up with dependent resources.

I'm finding it very useful to be able to define things that only exist in the context of (and with some specific relationship to) some set of other things.
Among other considerations, they only need to be unique within the context of their parent resource.

KatS,
@KatS@chaosfem.tw avatar

@jonny Now I do: https://www.sysc.at/display/Wikipages/Syscat_HTTP_API_-_conceptual_overview

It's a first draft, but sticks almost entirely to the conceptual, without getting bogged down in the details of the API itself.

Your yearly reminder that ‘layoff season’ is an American invention that infected the rest of the world.

Layoffs cost a company 35% more than retaining a core staff over 3 years.

The only purpose is for inflating investor reports.

Layoffs in tech immediately degrade the product, reduce security, create safeguarding issues, and inevitably destabilise the future of a given product.

KatS,
@KatS@chaosfem.tw avatar

@SecurityWriter I had no idea that "layoff season" was an established phrase.

However, I do remember when Citigroup laid of 10% of their IT workforce in September without notice, to improve the bottom line for the annual investor report.
Three years running.

And how, for the two more years I was with the company, senior management noted with concern that morale in the IT department plummeted alarmingly in August.

The thing is about Australian wildlife is that most Aussie animals won’t back down from a fight, but most of them don’t go looking for a fight either.

If you’re worried about visiting Australia because of our deadly fauna, here’s a hint. If you see an Australian animal, walk away from it.

A kangaroo has trouble disemboweling a retreating person because its attack involves rocking back on its tail and kicking you with both feet. It’s not really able to do any damage on something that’s moving away.

Magpies will generally let you know where their territory is, and if you stay out of it while they’re nesting, they won’t knock a hole in your head.

You literally have to get in the water to be bothered by sharks or crocodiles. Swim where the locals swim.

Snakes and spiders are about the only thing that you might happen upon by surprise and they tend to be happy to let you leave, but will happily fuck you up in self defence.

Y’see, Aussie wildlife mostly kills idiots who approach it, try to pat it, or catch it. Our animals mostly kill and maim stupid people.

I guess, my point is, we don’t have anything like lions or bears that will chase you down, pull you out of your car and tear you to pieces.

Also, the chances of being shot in this country is almost non existent.

Australia’s a pretty safe place to visit, comparatively.

You jest, but...

A while back, somebody solved the mystery of crop-circles in Tasmania when they spotted an unconscious wallaby beside one.

See, there are poppy plantations down there, to supply the hospital painkiller industry. Plants don't understand fences, so the roads are lined with medical-grade poppies.

Fences don't slow wallabies down much, either.

Turns out some of them were getting into the poppy paddocks, filling their bellies with these delicious flowers, getting monged out of their tiny little brains, then hopping around in a circle for hours until they passed out.

Eventually they'd wake up and bugger off, leaving a ring-shaped WTF for humans to puzzle over.

NZ only has katipo, which are basically redbacks that wanted less-crowded beaches. Other than humans, they're it.

However, in both NZ and Australia, the creepie-crawlies are really just decoys. It's the countryside itself that'll kill you.
@dgar

KatS,
@KatS@chaosfem.tw avatar

@dgar
Isn't that more of a huntsman trick?

I have heard of tree wetas leaping onto people, causing them to soil themselves, but they're not directly dangerous to humans.

Granted, that changes when you factor in second-order effects, that is, damage incurred due to any leaping, whirling and screaming in fright. Especially if you were (past tense) in control of heavy machinery at the time. They may be harmless, but they do look terrifying.

Sometimes I think about how brands like 7up and Pringles made 16bit video games for marketing purposes, and wonder why Uber and DoorDash haven’t done the same thing. But that recognition is spreading, too.
