This week's episode of (with the "time bug") was my favorite Trek thing in ages. It was classic Trek, including a strong theme of problem-solving and cooperation and listening to others. And Sonequa Martin-Green knocked it out of the park. I found the ending incredibly moving.

@charliejane I’m loving how the writing this season has sharpened on Burnham as smart problem solver working for & with her crew, guided by Federation values. S1 esp stood out for this. She played well off Georgiou in S2-3 & Book in S3-4, but it felt like she was written as daughter first, girlfriend first, even as captain.

This season we’re finally seeing her as captain first, whose leadership stands out, reflecting who she is, who she’s become. This episode distills that into crystal clarity.

OpenTable is joining GlassDoor in making previously anonymous reviews public by updating them to include the first name and profile picture of the user.

While I expect this helps with fake reviews it’s a huge breach of user trust. reviews

Has anyone built a tool that maps which instances* federate with which —something to visualize who’s federating (or not federating) with whom?

bc that would be an awesomely useful resource when picking a new community to join/migrate to

  • above a given membership threshold obvs bc there are a gazillion fedi instances

Thought for the day: can you imagine "2001: A Space Odyssey" if HAL9000 had the truthiness of ChatGPT?

LLS,

@cstross “I estimate a high likelihood someone will be able to fix the AE-35 unit on Jupiter.”

“Jupiter?!”

“Repair can be done by at least one of Jupiter’s 210 billion people.”

“210—how do you figure?”

“Earth’s population is 13 billion. Comparing surface areas, Jupiter’s estimated population is 153 billion people.”

“HAL, nobody lives on Jupiter. It’s uninhabitable.”

“Correct. In order to secure repair of the AE-35 unit, we should change course for Saturn, where 93 billion people live.”

Rather than “upgrade” for the (very few, very small) sites I manage, I’m thinking I’ll just remove it. I can’t be arsed w “content marketing,” don’t do ads, scarcely look at the stats anyway … and Google is so far down the path, I don’t see much of a downside. What am I missing?

I almost don’t want to link to the article even though it’s a pay wall bypass link, so they won’t get any money anyway. But for me, the New York Times has done so much damage with horrible reporting, analysis and outright misinformation that I personally canceled our lifelong subscription to it not long ago. I know why there are chronic absences post 2020 and so do you. See previous posts https://archive.md/2024.03.29-191726/https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2024/03/29/us/chronic-absences.html

Of course you can answer by posting which movie, which role and which actress it is. If you want, you can also write whether you liked the movie and the acting performance. I look forward to your answers :)
