Every time a fellow programming contractor I enjoy working with leaves a project, I immediately wish I had enough money to hire them to work on my own projects.

There's no better interview than working together with someone for months on end on someone else's dime.

Amazon plans to charge a fee for future versions of Alexa to offset the cost of LLM features. The pressure from ChatGPT is immense.

But how long this business model can last when Google is going to provide LLM features for free as part of search and Google Assistant?

LouisIngenthron,
@LouisIngenthron@qoto.org avatar

@carnage4life Yeah, but how long can Google continue to offer it for free as customers continue to leave due to enshittification?

Keep your seatbelts fastened. Snugly.

Another Boeing airplane (777 this time) exhibited a sudden altitude drop during turbulence over SE Asia. One passenger with a heart condition died; seven are in critical condition.

In March, a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner lost elevation on a flight from Oz to NZ. Reportedly an uncovered cockpit switch was involved. Boeing “recommended that airlines inspect the cockpit seats the next time they perform maintenance on their 787s”.”

@LouisIngenthron@qoto.org avatar

@kegill Non-Boeing airplanes aren't immune to turbulence either.

In this case, the plane and its manufacturer are irrelevant. The weather is at fault.

And the "rapid descent" was intentional, to get out of the rough air, not a second problem.

LouisIngenthron,
@LouisIngenthron@qoto.org avatar

@kegill Yes, all of that is true. But it doesn't mean we should rush to blame them for problems that aren't their fault.

"Just use Linux" is much like "just ride a bike" or "just shop at a refill store" - accessing the non default option can be time consuming, expensive or unavailable locally. We need to recognise you need a certain degree of privilege to have the capacity to complicate your life voluntarily. We need to be trying to make the better, harder thing more accessible, not blaming people for not using it.

LouisIngenthron,
@LouisIngenthron@qoto.org avatar

@afewbugs Yuuup. I'm an extremely tech-savvy professional software engineer and I just failed miserably at installing Linux (see linked thread).

The idea that the average person could do this without major frustration and disruption to their lives is ludicrous.

@fasnix @hazelnot It's like language. Everybody speaks the one they learned first, and makes it look easy. But few have the motivation or discipline to learn a second, even if the new language is arguably easier and makes more sense.

It's just a limitation of our biology afaik. 🤷‍♂️

Here’s an question that I vacillate on: what about colors? Obviously some blind people were previously sighted and so including colors in alt text is helpful to them. What about people who were never sighted? What makes for good description for those people when we’re trying to convey the variation and definition that color brings? Should we just use regular color terms because people know how to navigate those terms, or is there some different emphasis that would be helpful?

LouisIngenthron,
@LouisIngenthron@qoto.org avatar

@D_J_Nathanson Don't overthink it. Just describe the elements that are key to understanding what's being conveyed by the image. If the color is unusual or important, mention it. Otherwise, that's probably unnecessary fluff.

More importantly, I can't imagine that I can describe the essence of "red" in a way that would make a never-sighted person understand it better than they did before, so I'm not gonna try.

Ugh, Windows' short support life for 10 is far more egregious due to its absurd hardware requirements. The amount of e-waste that's going to be generated in October of 2025 is going to be ridiculous, and should pay for that.

Continued misadventures with trying and failing to install :

I re-downloaded the Fedora image and it still failed to validate before installation.

I tried the latest bleeding edge version of LinuxMint and it only shows up on one monitor (even though the desktop covers the others). Once I update the graphics driver, it stops showing up at all, and all I get after login is a black screen with a frozen mouse.

PopOS installed easily enough, but whenever I tried to adjust the display settings, I'd lose all displays and have to reboot. Also, running apt-get upgrade caused the whole OS to crash.

Anyone got any other suggestions for distros that might actually work for a dev machine with a 3080?

LouisIngenthron,
@LouisIngenthron@qoto.org avatar

@sustainrelease Didn't see any option for X11. Just tried Wayland but the whole install must be borked somehow now because any attempt to login just leads to a blank black screen with an endlessly flashing cursor.

LouisIngenthron,
@LouisIngenthron@qoto.org avatar

Final log:

I tried downloading #Fedora straight from the website and even that failed validation during installation, so I guess Fedora is just screwed atm.

Then, I tried #Ubuntu finally, which I was trying to avoid. It installed okay, but as soon as I log in, it goes straight to an "Uh oh something went wrong" crash screen.

For all the shit it takes, I haven't had any such problem with #Windows on this same hardware (at least not since the 95/98 days).

I don't know how #Linux can ever truly take off while such fundamental issues persist. But I also don't know how I can remain with Windows as they push ads and spyware into their OS.

Stuck between a rock and a hard place, I guess I'll just procrastinate on this issue until I build out my next rig.

LouisIngenthron,
@LouisIngenthron@qoto.org avatar

@idropyou Yeah, this was pretty much what I ran into the last time I made a serious foray into Linux (about ten years ago). Although, I am glad to say, I had to do a lot less console work this time around to get the basics done.

My guess about the hitch is that I've got a custom-built PC (which isn't too crazy; Intel/Nvidia) but I've also got 5 monitors (2 of which are 4K; 2 of which are portrait orientation). Windows handles that fine, but it's not exactly standard.

LouisIngenthron,
@LouisIngenthron@qoto.org avatar

@adamw Hmmm, thanks, I'll give it a shot. Strange that only that distro has the problem though.

LouisIngenthron,
@LouisIngenthron@qoto.org avatar

@tedherman It just gives me a black screen with a blinking cursor. 🤷‍♂️

LouisIngenthron,
@LouisIngenthron@qoto.org avatar

@tedherman Yeah, I remember that! Somewhere around here I still have an old slackware distro spread across 7 CD-ROMs, lol.

In my case now, though, it installs just fine, but starts failing after I log into the installation.

volkris, to USpolitics

I think whenever I see a headline or a person making some claim about the first reaction needs to be, “Okay, section 230 of what? What do you think that refers to?”

So many people have no idea what section 230 actually says, or does, but at least this response would help weed out the most uninformed of the people spouting out about it.

LouisIngenthron,
@LouisIngenthron@qoto.org avatar

@volkris Lol, and “what now-nonexistent piece of legislation is this a part of?” isn’t a trick question?

At least my question gets at the heart of how it works instead of asking about administrative trivia.
