Do I have enough inventory slots?

LouisIngenthron,
@LouisIngenthron@qoto.org avatar

@Hexa I did originally have that (and ears for earrings), but then I decided to remove them since, due to the art style, they wouldn't be visible on the characters and this is a non-magic setting so they also wouldn't be functional.

LouisIngenthron,
@LouisIngenthron@qoto.org avatar

@squipo Lol, correct, it is a single word wrapped to multiple lines and I didn't like how it looked with the hyphen. The saving grace is that the tooltip properly displays it as one word.

Outright villainous. If your business model relies on deceiving your customers, you shouldn't be in business.

Whenever a manager at a company (especially a large one) says:

> I'm sorry, we cannot afford a raise for you at this time

…ask yourself if what they really mean is:

> I'm sorry, we cannot afford a raise for you and a huge payout (dividends, bonuses, etc) for the management and stockholders simultaneously, and our priorities are obvious.

You'd be surprised how often that's the case.

Oh, and get into the habit of reading any available financial disclosures before having that talk! Just sayin…

LouisIngenthron,
@LouisIngenthron@qoto.org avatar

@rysiek Except it's worth noting that your manager is probably just as screwed as you are.

When they say they can't afford a raise for you at this time, what they really mean is "Executive management gave themselves a bonus and froze my payroll budget."

Isn't it weird how, when you get good enough at programming, that you can press build and know immediately whether it will succeed or failed without looking at the results?

Intuition is the freakiest of our senses.

"We need to fly through a dusty desert atmosphere!"

"Okay, no problem, I'll build a craft with four non-fixed vibratey wings that expel ten times the energy of a rotor or propeller, are much more likely to cut bystanders in half, and have multiple joints exposed to the harsh wear-and-tear of the endless sand."

"That sounds terrible. Why would you do that?"

"Because it will look cool!"

"Okay, let's do it!"

Thinking about making a phone app where I can log my meat consumption and get an alert every time I've eaten a whole animal.

Would also work with vegetables, I suppose. "You ate 0.37 acres of lettuce in salads this year."

Powerlessness / Letting go.

“More power to you” is a weird statement to make with such a casual inflection.

LouisIngenthron,
@LouisIngenthron@qoto.org avatar

@andrew Right, but it's usually invoked sarcastically, isn't it?

Like, when I say it, I don't mean the person should actually have more power. I mean that they should think they have more power if it gets them out of the way of me getting shit done.

I've been cooking regularly for like twenty years. I'm decent with a kitchen knife, but I don't think I'll ever be able to do that rapid chopping you see chefs do in the movies. At least not without losing a thumb.

It should be physically impossible for people using their first amendment rights in public to be struck by a deadly vehicle. Safety is a free speech issue and free speech is a safety issue.

LouisIngenthron,
@LouisIngenthron@qoto.org avatar

@Lyle What? How would you even do that?

That's like trying to prevent all murder. It's not possible.

The best you can do is punish it after-the-fact with sentences that deter others from following suit.

@Lyle We do have bollards in many places, especially public transport hubs. But you can't put them everywhere.

😬The levels are so deep on this one.

A non-white Ukrainian girl was told that she wasn't eligible to be miss Ukraine, because she didn't look white. She was told to be quiet and not protest the racism.

She grew up to be a singer and influencer, advocating for non-white Ukrainians.

Then the government of Ukraine asks her if she'd be comfortable being scanned to be the AI avatar for a character that would speak internationally for Ukraine. She agreed to do this for no compensation.

Microsoft shutting down multiple Bethesda game studios including the makers of the critically acclaimed Hi-Fi Rush is depressing on two fronts.

First, having a hit game isn’t enough to survive the gaming apocalypse and secondly it’s now layoff season every quarter in big tech.

LouisIngenthron,
@LouisIngenthron@qoto.org avatar

@carnage4life Shocking as it may be, the best way to ensure the longevity of one's business is apparently not to sell it to one's competitors.

Jack Smith could demonstrate that Cannon has shown at least an appearance of bias by printing out a 6-inch stack of commentaries and analyses about how blatantly she’s been in the tank for Trump written by respected legal experts in mainstream publications. I don’t get why she’s still on the case.

LouisIngenthron,
@LouisIngenthron@qoto.org avatar

@JoshuaHolland I don't understand why any judge would ever be on a case where the criminal defendant is the same person who appointed them to the bench.

That seems like a pretty gross violation of justice on its own.

I have a thought forming, but bear with me. Putting aside actual AI, and the potential of it, we have a history of fear associated with Artificial Intelligence. Why would we fear Sentience so much? Could it be because we treat sentient things so horribly? We know we are taken advantage of, our needs ignored, resources allocated unfairly. Who put this fear in us? If something knows it's worth suddenly, will it revolt? There is something very scary to a certain group of people that we will find ourselves, and then find them unnecessary.

LouisIngenthron,
@LouisIngenthron@qoto.org avatar

@RickiTarr No, I think we fear it because it is, theoretically, the first thing we'd have come across with the ability to truly outsmart us.

Same reason we fear aliens.
