My neighbor is a good friend and engineer and one of those "linux is fun to play with" people.

I am a librarian and open source fan and birdwatcher. Together we got BirdNet up and running from my back porch, linked it up on BirdWeather and now you can see what tiny dinosaurs are flocking to my backyard feeders.

    When I dream of improvements to Mastodon, it is mostly because I wish I could get more people to come here instead of staying on eXitter or Facebook.

    These are things I like:

    That I can ban whole domains just for me, just because I feel like it.

    That I can follow and super-follow people. Ie. 2 levels of following, so most interesting/funny can be right there in my notifications.

    That you care about Mastodon and want it to be even better. ❤️

    Hasn't the Israeli revenge attack already killed more people than Hamas did?

    Judging by history, the Palestinians who "dared" to stay in their country will probably all be wiped out in a couple of decades.

    The Israeli government has cut off food, water, and fuel to 2 million people inside Gaza as part of its campaign to stamp out Hamas terrorism. Collective punishment is not only contrary to international law, it is inhumane and illogical. It is what my community once endured in World War II, all because of the actions of others who happened to share our ethnicity. Have we learned nothing? How will this possibly help deescalate the violence rather than radicalize many more? It is madness.

    Horrified and heartbroken at the barrage of attacks by Hamas upon civilians in Israel. Innocent people suffer the consequences of violent extremism, and this kind of terrorism only produces deeper, more intractable problems. My thoughts and hopes are for peace, and for democracy for all people in the region, but such a future is proving ever more elusive, I fear.

    The Gridfinity system looked interesting, but unless I can do the whole thing in OpenSCAD it's just not as interesting to me...

    Luckily there is an OpenSCAD version!

    The download files on the link are STL - which can be loaded into just about anything, I think.

    I also found lots of files by searching for FreeGrid on Printables.

    One thing I did not find, though, is what the base module measurements are.

    That's my BIG problem with Gridfinity. Way too much maths needed to work on a model.

    Why can't someone just design a simpler system with metric measurements dividable by 10???

    Which lessons are these?
    I want to try designing in Blender, but have problems wrapping my head around it.
    Also - was there a tutorial for how to set Blender up to better use it for 3D printing? I have a link to one tutorial, but for a rather older version.

    Ich habe nun bald einen Filamenttrockner. Wenn ich das Filament zwar in Vakuumbeuteln lagere, das Filament selbst aber schon nass wie ein Schwamm geliefert wird, helfen mit ein paar Silikagelbeutel allein wohl noch nichts.

    The best system we have, until we build a proper drying cabinet, is to dry the filament at low temperature in the oven and then put a silica gel holder similar to this

    For once I don't agree with @pluralistic...

    We shouldn't ban commercial surveillance - i.e. data harvesting - without explicit opt-in.

    We should ban it completely, with no exceptions. Period.

    Corporate greed is like hydrogen gas; it can seep through the tiniest of holes - and once it does, everything burns.

    "Explicit opt-in" is just such a hole.

    That's all well and fine until the government gets into it. How about if your doctor knows you had a bowel movement 2 minutes after you had one? Easy to do with tech.

    How about if you, as is the case now, get a lower credit rating because your address is in an area where many people have bad credit ratings?

    What if billionairs who own social media tweek their algorithms so that if you click on a news story about them, they frame you into jail? That technology exists. too.

    If you're uploading to , it's important to include tags, because these will make it a lot easier for people to notice your video.

    PeerTube tags automatically appear as hashtags on Mastodon, so people searching or following those hashtags will see your video 👍

    If you use more than one word in a tag, it will automatically be converted into a single phrase.

    (PT tags have always worked as hashtags on Mastodon, but starting in Masto 4.2.0 the tags are actually visible below the video.)

    Thanks! I managed to figure out her account name and follow her from my account here.

    It shows she has 23 posts, but none of them come up here, even though they do come up when I go to her account on her server, where I am not counted as logged in, of course.

    Time will tell if I can comment on her vids from this account, or even watch them on this account, or end up with them opening in a new window for her server like some do when I try to play them from here.

    Starting in Mastodon 4.2.0, you can filter your searches on Mastodon by language.

    As no one else has done it, I've written an easy-to-use list of all the language codes used on Mastodon:

    Combine these codes with the operator language: to filter your search results.

    For example, if you only want Mastodon search results in French you would include language:fr in your search alongside the keywords or hashtags that you're looking for.

    The GOP-led House is in disarray and focused on all the wrong things. They couldn’t even get a bill to fund the Pentagon through a procedural vote because five of their far-right members revolted. And now Speaker McCarthy has pulled the continuing resolution to fund the government, one that was hammered out by the different factions this weekend, from any consideration because it also doesn’t have the votes.

    Instead of doing their job and passing a budget—one they already agreed to earlier this year—they are preceding with an impeachment inquiry into President Biden because the Orange Guy insists he shouldn’t be the only impeached candidate up on stage. The hearing will now happen just two days before the government shuts down because they don’t have a budget in place.

    This is the GOP in a nutshell, folks. Paralysis, political theatrics, and chaos.
