I'm Owen Tyme and I'm a novelist.

I prefer to write action-filled science fantasy, though I sometimes write fantasy or science fiction, when the inspiration takes me there. I love grounding what I write in science, even when writing about dragons, witches and wizards.

Though I currently call Liberal, Kansas home, I was born in the California Bay Area. I've come to enjoy the mild climate of Kansas. I'm a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

😂 seagate developed a bad rep now. on a serious note i use Cryptsetup and LUKS - open-source disk encryption as described here https://www.cyberciti.biz/security/howto-linux-hard-disk-encryption-with-luks-cryptsetup-command/ for my system 🔥

@nixCraft I don't like Seagate, but that's all based on personal experience. Both Seagate hard drives I owned died within six months to a year of purchase.

Maxxstor was even worse. Weeks. Eww.

I tried Western Digital and never looked back, because they do what they say on the tin, which is all I ask for. I've only seen two WD drives go bad. One of those failed a SMART test the day I got it home. Took it back, got a replacement. It happens, fair enough. The other lived 8 years, first.

Just about every example of Film-Noir uses a classic trope: the Femme Fatale.

In She Hunts Demons, this role is filled by a teenage girl by the name of Isabel Grant.

She initially presents herself to Little Miss Secret and Simmons as a terrified victim of the demon, Otto Vogerath, but she soon has them wrapped around her little finger.

@nixCraft Have any of you actually tried to use StableDiffusion or something like it for a serious purpose? I have.

Before I started selling my novels, I had some of them up on Wattpad. They needed cover images, even though free.

For each cover I spent days (or even weeks) of my time fiddling with prompts and trying to get something usable.

Prompt refinement and selection of images isn't as easy as you all think it is and its actually a valuable skill.

Still, I prefer an actual artist.

Clayton Simmons is the private investigator partner of Little Miss Secret, in She Hunts Demons. He affectionately calls her 'the boss', because she's been a part of their agency longer than he has, though she actually plays the role of muscle, while he's the brains and face of the operation.

The half-demon protagonist of She Hunts Demons has no known name, but instead a series of nicknames. Her friends call her The Boss, Little Miss Secret, Little Miss or LMS, while her enemies call her lots of unpleasant things, the least offensive and repeatable of which are half-demon brat or simply brat. She calls herself The Hunter.

@nixCraft Reminds me of a thing I often say to teenagers:

"You're a special and unique individual with talents, gifts and abilities all your own...just like everyone else."

It always gets a laugh and then they go about their lives a little more thoughtfully.

Teens need to know they're valued for being unique, but the amusing dichotomy is that they also have a desperate need to fit in, so my little saying addresses them both in a way that gets them to realize it.

So add:

@bookstodon Inevitably, an indie orders a bunch of their to sell in person.

Hopefully the rest of you won't make the mistake I did: blowing a bunch of money on author copies, only to realize, after the fact, I also need a business license from the city and a state seller's license, so I can collect and pay sales tax. Whoops.

I should be talking with an accountant soon, to rectify that.

Until then, I've got 35 books I can't sell.

Reddit is going public via the IPO route. Last year, the CEO got $193 million, but moderators are not paid and expected to work free past IPO. Only some moderators and active users in the USA can apply for Reddit's initial public offering to buy stock at a special price. Most Reddit users are motivated by fake karma points and likes. Also, they banned all unofficial Reddit mobile clients. Meanwhile, the CEO profits while everyone provides free labor.

@nixCraft Old enough to have been a small child when Space Quest was released.

Old enough to have played video games that booted from floppy drives and displayed on an EGA monitor on an IBM XT. Old enough to think those games were really awesome at the time.

@nixCraft My system is all open source software, right up until you hit my Steam installation, but that's because I'm using an AMD GPU, which doesn't require closed-source drivers.

I'm fine with closed source games. That's how the gaming industry works, but I'll never accept the idiotic shenanigans of Nvidia.

Nvidia doesn't support open standards and they actively fight against them, because their ultimate goal is total control of the GPU industry, rather than fairly competing in it.
