I am currently uploading the rest of my eBooks to #Smashwords and #Draft2Digital to finally have everything published wide. I did make more money with #KindleUnlimited but I think with #AI generated #eBooks on the rise, this would no longer be the case anyhow.
I believe in publishing wide both for doing a small part in fighting the Amazon monopoly and not putting all my eggs in one basket that can change the rules on me on a whim.
I like that idea - I've done the somewhat self-effacing one person stand against Amazon by not publishing there. so #smashwords it is. Now if I can only make up for it with a modicum of promotional ability I'd be fine...
The last day of the Smashwords sale is today. Making my books free for the week has resulted in so many extra downloads that I have to conclude (gulp) strangers are reading them. Scary but exciting!

I am honestly kind of amazed that so many #DRMFree bookstores don’t carry romance or are for sciFi and Fantasy books and no other genres. If there is a DRM free bookstore that sells all genres and both indie and big name authors, let me know! I’m having a really hard time finding one, legal, bookstore that I can go to. Since I can’t immediately locate one, you know, if you wanted to make such a store, I guarantee you, you would make a fortune off of this. I know Bookshop is working on one but I really did want to see if they weren’t reinventing the wheel that someone else has already created. It appears like the DRMfree bookstore that sells multiple genres, including romance and erotica, and also including independent as well as big name authors simply doesn’t exist yet. Just saying, if anybody wanted to make such a store, you would be making easy money, I guarantee it. #Publishing#bookstodon
It's an independent bookstore and may lack some big name authors whose works you're seeking. That may not be the fault of the authors who are often bound by contracts with publishers.
Some bad news for me this morning: Draft2Digital have just confirmed to me that their Creative Commons policy will remain the same following the merger with Smashwords: banned.
Side note: it would have been nice if Smashwords had told me this. I asked them back in Feb 2022 when the merger was announced, and their response was "we haven't discussed this yet". (No reply to later follow-up email.) It would also be nice if those with decision-making power in the publishing industry had learned the difference between Creative Commons and PLR.
This means that I am now looking for other options for the two (soon to be three) fantasy novels and one humorous nonfiction compilation that are currently being vended through Smashwords and their distribution network.
Fortunately, I can do the formatting myself. Know of any CC-friendly online vendors? Reliable ecommerce plugins? I'd particularly like to make sure the books are still accessible to libraries.
