@RyanWelsh@mstdn.social

At home: I take photos, teach and cast #ElderFuthark #runes, build #WLED projects, occasionally #FireBreathing and #firesafety, and #MedievalReenactment. I want to rediscover why I fell in love with social networking before it was all run by mega corps.

At work: I'm a #KnowledgeAnalyst #KnowledgeManagement for a #cybersecurity company's #CustomerSuccess org. I help run our #KCSv6 program to drive self-service and #casedeflection. Sometimes, I publish threat/vulnerability content.

RyanWelsh, to Cybersecurity

Better late on an #introduction than never. I’m no good at them.

40-year-old dude who still can’t believe he’s not in his early 30’s anymore. #CatDad. Doing #KnowledgeManagement for a #cybersecurity company, focusing on #KCS. Obsessed with #pkm / #secondbrain stuff; #Obsidian’s my jam. Missing #ttrpg time. Interested in starting #hydroponics.

I don’t post a lot: #Introverted #ADHD wallflower who’s alright at replying, shit at starting a conversation.

Well met.

So I ate a clif bar tonight... and I'm still nauseous hours later.

Ugh.

Anyone else have issues with protein bars/powders, etc?

RyanWelsh,

@britt 👋 Reporting in. Several flavors of Luna bars do that for me. I get instant heartburn, sometimes acid reflux with it.

RyanWelsh,

@britt Nope! Haven’t figured it out. Just some sweet flavors just set me off. I had full blown GERD in the past. It’s under control now but yeah, certain flavors.

I also avoid artificial sweeteners like the plague. Holdover from being a former epileptic. So it’s not that. 🤔

  • RyanWelsh,

@hq1 Welcome! What's your mission? What are you seeking to achieve with it?

    RyanWelsh,

@hq1 Obsidian is a great option to start. At its core it’s just a Markdown text editor where you connect notes. Try not to get overwhelmed by, and over complicate your journey with all of the amazing community plugins. Get used to taking those notes.

But don’t wait to start processing those notes. Turn data and experiences into knowledge.

    RyanWelsh,

@hq1 Lots of great resources. I learned a ton watching FromSergio https://youtube.com/@FromSergio, Linking Your Thinking with Nick Milo https://youtube.com/@linkingyourthinking, and @nicole https://youtube.com/@nicolevdh (esp if you’re a nerd.

@fortelabs https://youtube.com/@TiagoForte also has a lot of content not necessarily specific to Obsidian.

Remember taking notes nets you little. Processing them is where the gains lie.

    RyanWelsh,

@hq1 @nicole @fortelabs Absolutely! It’s been awesome finding homies to geek out with here. Especially new Obsidian homies who are just getting started. That’s exciting shit.

    I’m sickened.

Just drove by someone’s property going south near Vancouver, #Washington on the way to Portland & passed 3 huge flags on tall flagpoles. One was the Confederate flag, (couldn’t make out one, and 1 🇺🇸). I’m just livid.

Livid & sick to my stomach.

Yes, I know it’s a red area, we drive through every time we take our Canada trips, but the flags were new. Lots of Trumpy & religious signs, but this… is a 1st.

    RyanWelsh,

@GottaLaff It's been my experience that anywhere in the greater Seattle metro area, things are pretty chill and safe feeling. The second you get some distance, the absolutely ginormous Frump signs & flags, Confederate BS, etc comes up. Especially west over in the islands.

Even around me in Lake Stevens, quite a bit of it. Huge pickups coal rolling and intimidating other drivers with giant US, Dump, and Snek flags.

I'm not surprised anymore, just disappointed.

I have nearly nothing negative to say about the except: Battery life… it sucks… a lot.

I can’t finish a gaming session without having to plug it in.

    RyanWelsh,

@britt Been thinking a lot getting one. But have been wondering about that. Thanks for the data point.

Have any general examples? A few titles you’ve tootled around in and how long you got out of the cells?

    RyanWelsh,

@britt Awesome, thanks for that context. Honestly 90 min is plenty of time given how little time I actually have for gaming.

I feel like it’s nearing time to either 1. Build a new gaming desktop, 2. Try the gaming laptop idea again, ehhh, or 3. Steam Deck! Kinnnnnda leaning on 3.

    Appreciate you!

Have you been to a LAN party?

    RyanWelsh,

@neil Used to run 12 he LAN parties every other Saturday at Northern Michigan University from 2001-2006. College organization called the Organization for Interactive Computing (OIC). Got a Bawls sponsorship and everything (think that was the only way to procure a bottle in all of Upper MI at the time!).

Great memories. Miss that a lot.

Once upon a time -- many, many years ago and late one night -- I entered the ARPANET (the Internet's ancestor) computer room at UCLA to do some work on ARPANET host #1 -- the DEC PDP-11/45 that was UNIX UCLA-ATS.

But something was wrong. The system was behaving very oddly. It was up, and not under heavy load, but ... it was as if it kept starting and stopping. When I'd type there'd be activity -- I could see it on the front panel lights, but when I stopped typing ... everything seemed to stop. I could get keyboard echos, and then a response ... but then everything would stop again.

Normal boot wasn't working either, but it was possible to reboot from the emergency DECtape.

    But still clearly failing overall.

When we ultimately found out what the problem was, I was quite amused. The real-time clock hardware had failed, so the process scheduler was not cycling properly. However, whenever someone typed, the keyboard interrupt would push the scheduler so there'd be some action -- but then it would stop again until there was more typing and more interrupts.

Basically, the system was operating as if on a hand crank. Live long enough, and you see almost everything. -L

    RyanWelsh,

@lauren Such a cool memory. Thanks for sharing that one!

Today's gravel ride. I was 1mph faster than last time I rode this route. That's progress towards getting back in riding shape.

My main goal is 60 mile days. My secondary is a bikepacking trip and riding/hiking the Minnesota Low-High-Low Route. I had the goal of riding the Northern Minnesota Berserker Route, but that isn't going to happen this year. I'm starting from a too low level of fitness for a 120-mile day ride.

    RyanWelsh,

@bryanhansel Not gonna lie, I was momentarily very confused by the photo with the commentary.

My first thought was, “what kind of bike do you have that lets you bomb down stream trails?!? I wanna try…”

It’s been a while since I’ve posted some #RetroComputing goodness. Time to fix that!

This is my 2020 13” #Apple MacBook Pro running System 7.1, thanks to Mini vMac. The environment is running at 640x400—the native resolution of the old 100-series PowerBooks. Much to my surprise and delight, this is a 16:10 aspect ratio, and it appears perfectly proportioned on this display.

And this isn’t a toy. I set up a PDF printer, and the PDFs can be passed to the host machine for viewing and printing!

    RyanWelsh,

@digichelle That old school Mac font tho…

Funny. I was just watching “Past Tense” and apparently that’s the font everything uses in the near future.

In case you missed it, all links on Mastodon count as 23 characters towards your limit, no matter how many characters the link really is.

So, you don't need to use link shorteners on Mastodon as they won't actually affect the link's length.

Mastodon does this because it's better for everyone's privacy to avoid link shortener services, it means people can see what they're clicking on, and the link won't stop working if the shortener service shuts down.

    More info at:

    RyanWelsh,

@feditips My random thought on this:

How did the decision land on using 23 characters of the limit for URLs?

Or for that matter, why does any standard emoji (not instance emojis) – like ⁉️ – eat TWO characters from the limit instead of just one?

These are the things that live rent-free in my brain, apparently.

    RyanWelsh,

@ChrisPirillo My wife and I make these for breakfast at home almost every weekend. Best damn breakfast sammiches i think we’ve ever had.

We do ours with Violife cream cheese but the garlic aioli is an excellent choice.

Impossible’s spicy breakfast sausage patties give it a great kick.
