There’s a lot to chew on in this short article (ht @ajsadauskas):
https://www.bbc.com/worklife/article/20240214-ai-recruiting-hiring-software-bias-discrimination

“An AI resume screener…trained on CVs of employees already at the firm” gave candidates extra marks if they listed male-associated sports, and downgraded female-associated sports.

Bias like this is enraging, but completely unsurprising to anybody who knows half a thing about how machine learning works. Which apparently doesn’t include a lot of execs and HR folks.

@inthehands in a discussion I saw someone noted that a "removing AI from workflow" consulting company would soon be viable.

Tired of the SF Downtown is dying stories when (1) downtown has always been dead (2) it was planned that way (3) most of the businesses complaining about crime and poor sales are simply not relevant (4) no SF resident goes downtown for fun or voluntarily (even me, and I'm only a mile away)

It's so easy to blame homeless people, when imho it's much clearer to blame poor planning and poor business people for most of it

@skinnylatte I regularly walk in San Jose. Which isn't perfect but is far more interesting than SF these days.

I was pregnant with twins and bedridden during the entire O.J. trial. I watched every minute of it. Punditry became a thing since there was wall to wall, never ending coverage. In my mind, it was the beginning of the end for cable news.

StevenSavage,

@StillIRise1963 agreed. That's also when news became far more narrative.

Apparently the NCAA tournament is bringing out the racists. This is the second major incident on this topic (on top of the pickup-truck-intimidation-and-racial-epithets in Idaho last week). Also, this is an elected official.

I'm sure there are plenty of you who are blocking spam direct messages as fast as they can come in.

There's a setting in your notification preferences where you can block any direct message that's not coming from someone you follow. You'll also probably need to change your notifications to go off only if you get mentioned by someone you follow or someone who follows you.

Whatever is happening is probably not so much a spam wave as it is an attempt to undermine the Fediverse. For that reason, it may be better to not be so fast to block as blocking entire domains creates more fragmentation of the Fediverse and creates incentive for bad actors to sink an instance they don't like by opening up an account on that instance to harass already irritated people and create pressure for admins to block that domain.

I'll change my notifications and DMs back after the wave passes.

@sysop408 @KatM Thanks Sheldon. I appreciate this - and it's an example of how we can survive these attacks together.

The problem I have with many Nintendo fans is that they believe that the entire gaming industry should be Nintendo.

It’s true that Nintendo has a certain philosophy when it comes to gaming. It also generally—but not always—works for them.

But it’s a fallacy to believe that higher spec hardware inevitably leads to more expensive game development cycles.

How do I know this? Because PC, as a platform, has the highest specs available. Top of the line PCs almost always outperform consoles—even consoles that are newly released.

And yet, on any given day of new releases on Steam, few games require those high specs. Most games released on Steam require meagre specs. 10-year-old hardware can still run the bulk of new PC games.

As someone who owns an RTX 3080 Ti, it’s a rarity for any new game to push GPU—even on ultra settings. Even the most demanding AAA game barely puts my PC through its paces, and my card is almost four-years-old now.

So if top-of-the-line AAA made now don’t even cause my four-year-old GPU to sputter, what does that say about the bulk of hundreds of indie and AA titles released each month?

The ironic thing about all this is that many—perhaps most—of the 3rd party titles Nintendo fans love so much get released on PC first. They don’t start life as Switch games. They’re often PC exclusives for at least a year before they move to Switch.

What does that tell us? That just because powerful hardware exists doesn’t mean games require those specs. Better hardware doesn’t mean longer dev cycles and higher spec requirements. It just means that devs have more options for what’s possible on hardware.

You know who else agrees with me? Nintendo. If they believed higher specs lead to longer dev cycles and bigger production budgets with lower ROI, they wouldn’t keep releasing better hardware with each console generation—even if their hardware doesn’t usually have specs that match their competitors.

For God’s sakes, better specs do not lead to higher spec requirements. And they certainly don’t lead to higher devs cycles.

@atomicpoet I'm playing Dread Delusion, a retro rpg. It's very 90s. You could run it on very base systems.

It's also so good I've put in 19 hours in 10 days.

<Spy> "I feel you both don't understand the situation, yet understand it better than many."

Regarding previous Toots. A lot of people calling for civil war, you'll notice, also support autocrats. They'll participate in a war IF someone covers their ass, gives them a group to join, etc. They'll approve from the sidelines.

If involved, they will keep doing horrible things since they wouldn't be able to stop, they'd be too weak.

They won't start one, but they may snap or get too far into their bubble and do some smaller atrocities.
