Subumbral

@Subumbral@mastodon.sdf.org

I organize books for fun at the public library. Knit, crochet, cook, read a lot, walk a lot , look at things. Small menagerie of birds and squirrels. Petsitter.

Lived in Venice Beach in the 60's, Utah in the 70's, and Oregon ever since. Big fan of Alaska, Seattle, San Francisco, New York, and Hawaiian Beaches.

All photos are by me on a phone camera, unless credited.

Avatar photo is me wearing an orchid. Banner photo is a skein of waterfowl in the skies above Eugene.

Sometimes when you learn how something works, you think, Thanks knowledge, that really helped, everything makes more sense, and other times you look up how wrists turn, and it's like WTF?!

@RickiTarr How I walk around for miles on the tiny bones in my feet is a thing I wonder about sometimes

This was a fun one, so let's do it again. What is something you've learned that seems unlikely, even though you know it's true? Here's one I think about a lot:

Sight, while being something something many people are born with, is not an innate ability, but something we learn to do. People who were born blind or were blind for a long time, who get sight, have to learn to see.

@RickiTarr That without air friction a feather and a gold bar would fall at the same speed

Subumbral,
@Subumbral@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@RickiTarr Annie Dillard has a chapter on that in Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, the experiences of the first people who had lifelong cataracts removed... they had to learn about things disappearing behind other things, how things appeared smaller with distance

Gummi Worms are probably the best kind of worms I've eaten.

@RickiTarr I ate the one at the bottom of a bottle of mezcal, stick with the gummies 😩🤮 the texture was... memorable

Alright, lots of heavy discussions today, so let's talk about something silly!

What is a movie that always makes you laugh?

Personal pick:

Anything Mel Brooks, but Robin Hood: Men in Tights, it's just funny every time I watch it.

I had a dream months ago that I had suddenly realized that I had forgotten to die, it was a thing to do, like renewing a license or getting a booster, that I hadn't really had time for. So I went in to do it. 1/2or3

@RickiTarr That's definitely what living with me would be like. Hi, how was your day, solstice is coming and I've been thinking about the equation of time again. Is pasta ok for dinner?

Someone just told me to check out something at 8th and Broadway in Eugene, but they're parallel, they don't intersect. But it reminds me of when I decided to get a photo of 5th and Madison in New York because we have that intersection in Eugene, and I walked from Madison almost all the way to 5th before it dawned on me that they don't intersect. New York is distracting. 🤦‍♂️
