Once Upon a Time it was the first week of September at an Engineering School... and salespeople for the HP15C and the TI-55 were in kiosks next to each other outside of the bookstore. The prices were the same & each salesperson was trying to out do the other with calculation performance. A crowd had gathered to watch... but so far each had calculated the other to a standstill.

Suddenly, the HP person said, "I can prove that the HP calculator is better than the TI calculator!"

The TI person replied confidently, "Oh really? How...?"

"May I have your TI calculator to keep?" asked the HP person.

The TI person, thinking of all the sales, said "Of course." and handed it to him.

"May I have two volunteers from the audience?"

Two students raised their hands and stepped forward.

The TI shattered into a hundred small bits of black plastic. The HP dented on one corner, but still turned on and was able to function.

The TI person did not make one sale that day.

TL;DR Sometimes there is more to Engineering than just the Math...

So the few times I've been to the US - once to California (which admittedly is different, on vacation rather than work), once to Corpus Christi, once to Arkansas (near Memphis) - I found myself boggling at how much open asphalt there was between stores.

I wondered if it was just because they had the space to expand, so they just did. It didn't occur to me that there were minimum parking rules. It was always very easy to park. Everywhere looked sort of empty/unpopular.

Ben, I know that area. The drivers on Rt3 are both horrible and bloodthirsty. Yes, people have (and sometimes still do) try to run across Rt3 and that that road has a body count.

I don't have up to date numbers, but it is significant. Should a tunnel or a walking bridge be built? Of Course... but no one will sign off paying for it (and no one will authorize shutting down Rt3 to build either of them.

    the attorney who wrote this fawning WSJ OpEd on is the same attorney who wrote earlier this week to the Senate Judiciary Committee rejecting the authority of the Committee over his private client.

    The client?

    Leonard Leo.

    Sure is a small world in those parts.

    Twenty-six paragraphs into this, we learn that the lead author is an attorney who has a major tax case in front of SCOTUS next term. Justice Alito met with him for several hours.

    Alito and thomas violated federal policy and take lavish gift that are prohibited. Then they rule in favor of the bribor.
