I don’t know what I’m doing, either.

I do a fair amount of boosting which, for me, means “this post has value”, so not necessarily that I agree with it.

Following is open, no worries if you dip in and dip out. I tend to wait to follow until I’ve interacted with you a bit first.

I have a theory that the men who reply to posts with some version of "not all men" do so because they see some of themselves in whatever statement was made and they don't like it.

WhiteCatTamer,
@WhiteCatTamer@mastodon.online avatar

@Loukas @talia_christine On the one hand, I get that you are responsible for only your actions.

On the other hand, if you see someone hit six people that look like you, do you flinch, or think “but they don’t want to hit ME”?

There’s a nasty tendency in supposedly progressive circles to tack on an extra modifier when one is really going after a group that it’s generally not cool to go after; see “the problem with white cis women is” and then just being misogynistic.

The more I think about it, the major problems in tech and in society in general is that all the investment is going to solve problems that white affluent men have

@danirabbit That does explain why there’s more effort put into making AI girlfriends than making laundry-folding machines.

I think someone should devise a fun Buzzfeedesque quiz which asks fundamental questions in a sassy way that will tell you which party you need to vote for.

WhiteCatTamer,
@WhiteCatTamer@mastodon.online avatar

@StillIRise1963 I remember seeing (and taking) this quiz that determined how likely you were to be conservative or liberal based on your sense of disgust, which correlates well with those views.

If I remember correctly, one of the questions was, if a fly swatter had been cleaned well and used to stir soup, would you eat that soup? It was an interesting set of questions!

@StillIRise1963 @MaryAustinBooks @Aviva_Gary Here’s the study it was based on: https://www.cell.com/current-biology/fulltext/S0960-9822(14)01213-5?_returnURL=http%3A%2F%2Flinkinghub.elsevier.com%2Fretrieve%2Fpii%2FS0960982214012135%3Fshowall%3Dtrue

In the Results page, the people who made the quiz note that obviously there’s a bias involved around medical professionals.

@Alice Oh I tried that, but I guess there’s some sort of unspoken limit to how often they can help you, because they slowed down after 16 calls and did something that I consider uncalled for and drastic after 57.

Anyways.

At the Role-Playing Games club today, a fun debate. The whole campaign is on this ice-locked ship in the arctic: the DM introduced the possibility of sirens.

One player declares their character is ace and therefore immune to romantic seduction.

Not so, says DM these sirens call out with "whatever you desire most" ... another player wonders if, since their character is monk seeking enlightenment and the death of all worldly desires are they immune?

Apparently the sirens do enlightenment too.

The Google AI summary suggesting that people eat rocks is amusing, but it's not a great example of AI "hallucination". The text is a pretty straight and accurate summary of a satirical Onion article. This isn't a complex algorithm synthesizing bogus conclusions from good data (something that's definitely a real risk in AI systems). This is simply Google mis-categorizing non factual input as factual, something it could have (and has) done just as easily without "AI".

WhiteCatTamer,
@WhiteCatTamer@mastodon.online avatar

@mattblaze @PlasmaGryphon While true, there’s a big difference between a search returning text that claims A with no clear source, simply presented as fact, and returning a link that has text that says A, where the link itself tells the story.

And he places much of the blame for the court’s allegedly illegitimate intrusion into redistricting on a surprising culprit: Brown v. Board of Education," wrote Stern.”

    Likeliest in my view of actual Balkanization would be Abbott and cronies pushing too hard on Texit for the purposes of drumming up votes that several counties declare their secession from TEXAS, and then we have two options: Abbott’s Texas National Guard aides the federal forces, or opposes them.

    @andrew @law I don’t know what’s worse: that Microsoft has done a risk analysis of losing all those professions that can’t operate with this level of spyware and deemed it worth moving forward anyways because it provides some greater value (the argument that it can be used to train AIs to replace even more office workers makes sense), that they haven’t done it, or that they have and just rejected the idea that they’ll lose customers because enshittification is the norm.
