I really hope the future web installer will be much more reliable & performant than what we've had for the past 10+ years, because I suffer everytime I need to use the current version of . It's just super fragile.

It randomly hangs, crashes or slugs around, whether you're trying to pick the language, set up network (for the netinstaller), and to use the partitioning tool (any of the three variants). Everytime I have to touch this Ming vase, I ponder my distro choices.

adamw,
@adamw@fosstodon.org avatar

@nekohayo the web UI is just a UI. the backend code is the same.

however, I really don't recognize that description? we test anaconda a whole bunch and I really don't see it 'randomly hang' or 'crash' very often at all.

the partitioning UI is a matter of taste, but I really don't agree that anaconda in general is fragile. but if you can crash it...please file bugs.

adamw,
@adamw@fosstodon.org avatar

@nekohayo I mean, I run the installer quite a lot, and so do the other ten people on my team, and we have an automated test system that runs it several hundred times a day, and it just...doesn't do that. so I'm rather baffled.

adamw,
@adamw@fosstodon.org avatar

@nekohayo sure, I'd be down for that.

adamw,

@nekohayo try https://kojipkgs.fedoraproject.org/compose/39/Fedora-39-20231031.1/compose/Everything/x86_64/iso/Fedora-Everything-netinst-x86_64-39-1.5.iso . current f39 rc (probably the one we'll release, unless someone finds a blocker overnight).

adamw,
@adamw@fosstodon.org avatar

@nekohayo "advanced blivet" is really just the app called blivet-gui . there's still going to be a button in webUI to launch that app (though it will run in standalone mode, rather than embedded into the installer).

if you think it responds unacceptably slowly, sure, that's worth reporting. I don't remember offhand whether i've seen that myself.

today:

  • ran a very long and complicated 39 go/no-go meeting, unfortunately we had to slip another week, sent out announcements and updated schedule and calendar
  • a bit of testing and bug reproduction
  • filed a stable push request, will probably request a new candidate compose soon
  • upgraded staging instance to fedora 39 and latest openqa/os-autoinst builds, seems to be fine so far

Heads up, if you're lucky enough to be running on a AMD board - you probably want to update the firmware to version 3.03 (recently made available). according to feedback, it solves several problems folks were running into. https://community.frame.work/t/amd-ryzen-7040-series-bios-3-03-and-driver-bundle-beta/38655

Fedora Linux 39 Release Delayed Due to Last-Minute Bugs
https://linuxiac.com/fedora-linux-39-release-delayed-due-to-last-minute-bugs/

Due to some last-minute bugs, Fedora 39, slated for release on October 24, is postponed with a new release date of October 31.

adamw,
@adamw@fosstodon.org avatar

@linuxiac since this keeps getting shared, just to be clear: the bugs aren't "last minute". they have each been known and marked as release blockers for some time. the problem is that the fixes for the raspberry pi ones especially are not straightforward and are taking time to work out.

OK, this has annoyed me one time too many: How does one put in fullscreen mode? Why doesn't F11 work anymore?

adamw,
@adamw@fosstodon.org avatar

@ed @j3j5 f11 works fine for me on Fedora 39 with packaged Firefox on Wayland. I can't recall this being broken in the past (though I don't use it much). how is your firefox installed?

Are there any other users here with hardware? I've been using the spin of Fedora 38 for over a year now, and while I adore KDE and have for years, I'm having some issues lately and I can't help but wonder if Nvidia's crappy drivers are not a great fit for KDE. 😔

Have any of you lovely tried both and KDE on Nvidia? Is there any noticeable difference in performance/compatibility/bugginess? Would switching to Gnome be a better fit for my system, or would I likely see all the same issues?

In that same vein, has anyone had any luck getting Wayland to work well on Nvidia hardware? IIRC, 39 or 40 is going to cut X11 altogether, which is tough for me cause Fedora is my favorite , but Wayland is a terrible experience for me, at least with Fedora KDE and my RTX 2070 Super.

I'm so tempted just to ditch Nvidia altogether, but I would miss DLSS and good performance with raytracing, so it's a really hard choice. 😥

adamw,
@adamw@fosstodon.org avatar

@ADHDefy One of the major reasons for the idea of dropping X support is that it should force NVIDIA to actually make their goddamn proprietary driver work with Wayland. As long as X support is around, they seem inclined not to bother.

Another angle on the issue is that https://www.collabora.com/news-and-blog/news-and-events/nvk-has-landed.html is getting somewhere: when that's a bit more mature, it should be pretty much the best option for NVIDIA users.

adamw,
@adamw@fosstodon.org avatar

@ADHDefy personally, though, I would stick with Intel or AMD graphics hardware. my test/games box uses an AMD adapter and the open source driver. my main work box is a laptop with Intel graphics only. makes life easier. but I'm not a super hardcore gamer.

I wouldn't generally expect there to be much difference between KDE and GNOME, but it would help if you explained specifically what problems you've been seeing.

knurd42, to fedora

In case you are (a) on 39 and (b) installed mesa-freeworld from to use GPU accelerated video decoding, any software that uses this feature might act up currently (video players, firefox, ...). A fixed package in on its way and can be found here: https://koji.rpmfusion.org/koji/buildinfo?buildID=26949

The problem is caused by a LLVM mismatch: Fedora for some reason had build its Mesa with llvm16, while RPM Fusion's buildsys used the latest llvm in the repo (llvm17) (both were build round about the same time)

adamw,
@adamw@fosstodon.org avatar

@knurd42 the "reason" is "we've no idea if mesa works with llvm17 yet and don't want to try it this late in the f39 cycle". the way the maintainer implemented this, though, is rather sneaky: they didn't use the llvm16 compat packages, they just created a side tag, tagged the old llvm build onto that side tag, built mesa in the side tag, then tagged mesa into updates-candidate! i did not realize that was possible, and I'm not sure it ought to be allowed, but...right now it is.

i really liked this article about tailwind https://joshcollinsworth.com/blog/tailwind-is-smart-steering (by a frontend dev who dislikes tailwind). I love tailwind and it helped me understand why some other people have a different perspective

adamw,
@adamw@fosstodon.org avatar

@b0rk It's a good article, but I find its take that the "builder" approach is worse for "long-term factors like ease of maintainability" a bit weird. I'm not well versed in CSS or tailwind, but in general, I tend to find that using (good!) frameworks/abstraction layers tends to result in more, not less, maintainable code. wdyt?

I was pretty shocked today what a terrible experience it is to run in on Windows. Is there a better free option? Perhaps VMware Player?

adamw,
@adamw@fosstodon.org avatar

@sesivany what's specifically terrible about it?

adamw,
@adamw@fosstodon.org avatar

@sesivany that seems weird. I did an install to a fairly minimally-specced vbox guest on Linux last week and it worked fine. The Register reviewed F39 Beta recently, using vbox on Windows, and didn't note any major problems - https://www.theregister.com/2023/09/27/beta_ubuntu_fedora/ - "the beta did install successfully in VirtualBox with only cosmetic wobbles."

adamw,
@adamw@fosstodon.org avatar

@sesivany how much RAM does the system itself have? how much is windows using?

xps 13s aren't that great at hosting VMs in general, really, but should be able to manage one. I run a 2022 xps 13 myself. it hangs if I try and run three at once. :P

adamw,
@adamw@fosstodon.org avatar

@lproven no problems. unfortunately I don't really have a viable windows host to test this on with windows - the only one I can use is an incredibly underspecced budget laptop which can barely run itself, never mind a VM on top...

Some thoughts about buying and selling apps on the desktop.

https://popey.com/blog/2023/09/there-is-still-no-linux-app-store/

adamw,
@adamw@fosstodon.org avatar

@popey @ted yeah, I get the impression the basic problem here is that whoever is in the position of running the 'app store' has a lot of liability issues to deal with. if you can reach the scale of Apple or Google or Valve, it's a money printing operation, but at a smaller scale it could be a money burning operation...

where do you go to find information about iptables? so far I have:

hey, at least it's not ipchains, though!
