People can tell themselves whatever lie they want about not voting for Biden. It still amounts to a lack of maturity in thinking opting out sends a message, of empathy for those who will suffer under Trump, and of logic for the stakes in 2024.

Read about Project 2025 and decide if you want to vote to unleash that on the nation and world. Because not voting is still a vote--a vote that says the world can burn unless you get everything you want. Decide which side you're on.

aeischeid,
@aeischeid@mastodon.social avatar

@augieray so much of the discourse around voting seems to reflect a knowledge that our only real way to vote is to vote against the major party candidate who is the worst - Essentially saying that voting FOR a candidate is silly and counterproductive, but avoids saying that, I suppose because saying that outright has to acknowledge that the "democracy" we have is fundamentally flawed

This is funny. OpenAI, who scraped the entire internet to build its product, is now enforcing copyright via notices. They still don’t give credit for stealing content from everyone, yet now acting like holier-than-thou https://www.reddit.com/r/ChatGPT/comments/1cnvyzp/

aeischeid,
@aeischeid@mastodon.social avatar

@nixCraft maybe others have pointed out already, but copyright and trademark violation are quite different, and OpenAI seems to be asserting on trademark not copyright in spite of the text here talking about "copyrighted logos" it seems more about unauthorized use of trademarked logo

Not that I want to defend OpenAI, but if you want to pin them on something I don't think this would be it

Over the weekend I applied this neat little CSS trick for implementing color change effect on the pagination component of my blog. One little CSS rule solves it for both light and dark themes!

@Techaltar Cool Stuff!!

Very briefly you mentioned how this might be useful for solar PV. Did you learn more on that?

Theoretically it makes sense since silicon cells generate current from a certain wavelengths of light, meaning some of the sunlight is essentially unused, so putting some quantum dots in a layer to absorb those unused wavelengths and emit them as useful ones does sound like it would have a lot of promise, but I am sure there are reasons its not already being done.

New Kobos are a lot cheaper than most no-name color e-readers you can buy.

Big Tech is extremely unimpressed by Apple’s EU App Store changes

"It took about an hour for app developers to realize they had been screwed."

aeischeid,
@aeischeid@mastodon.social avatar

@arstechnica Not just big tech!

devs or dev teams that aren't big enough to maintain apps in various app stores and wrestle with all the arbitrary approval hoops are also pissed. A lot of them just want PWAs to be a realistic option. Many already had working PWAs that will now be broken.

Your focus on "big tech" sets up a Google & Meta vs Apple frame. but Apple vs the web and indie devs, while maybe less dramatic is probably where the real impact lies for most users and devs

Visiting Las Cruces, New Mexico. A few thoughts.

Las Cruces is comparable to Ames, IA in that similar population and a College town,

but even more car dependent, which I am surprised by. It more spread out, very little public transit, bike infrastructure seems almost non existent outside of unusable, laughably unsafe bike gutters.

aeischeid,
@aeischeid@mastodon.social avatar

The number of houses and businesses with rooftop solar is surprisingly low. This is a nearly ideal climate for solar pv and solar thermal water heaters but seems like most of the houses have gas furnaces and water heaters.

aeischeid,
@aeischeid@mastodon.social avatar

hot rod type cars and lifted modified trucks are everywhere, and a few but very noticable small motorbikes with no mufflers to speak of. just a few steps away from a mad max scenario at times. so dumb. Very few trees or denser vegetation, and just lots of rock and hard surfaces means sounds carries, the suburbs are noticeably louder because of this.

aeischeid,
@aeischeid@mastodon.social avatar

Keep coming back to the no solar water heaters thing though. Those feel like an absolute no brainer in this climate, even in the winter the sun is STRONG here. you could easily heat your house with some solar water heater and radiant flooring situation, maybe a electric heat pump for a longer cold spell, but no, natural gas (methane) is clearly dominant.

@QasimRashid maybe that shouldn't be covered though, I am very skeptical of obesity meds and their peddlers - esp considering their history - maybe this isn't something we should have the public footing the bill for just yet. Seems to be better options w improved longterm outcomes & fewer downsides for less $$. govt could help with some of those!
