If you wonder how those traditional, "Christian", "pro-life" and Texas hospitality is going nowadays. (paywall) https://www.houstonchronicle.com/politics/texas/article/border-trooper-migrants-wire-18205076.php

"U.S. officials told CBS News the soldier in question was Private 2nd Class Travis King, who was being escorted back to the United States from South Korea for disciplinary reasons. After going through airport security to leave, he somehow returned and managed to join a border tour group before crossing into North Korea, the officials said. " https://www.cbsnews.com/news/north-korea-us-national-american-crosses-border-demilitarized-zone-dmz-tour/

ai6yr,

@mjausson 😬 Poor decisions were made, indeed.

ai6yr,

@exador23 @KrajciTom Bad decision making. No matter what your assault charges or what in the military, it's not a life sentence. Going to North Korea very well could be "for life".

A good rundown on how doctors are planning to handle increasing and (one: have body bags pre-prepped so you can stuff live patients in there with bags of ice for rapid cooldown to prevent ) https://www.statnews.com/2023/07/18/doctors-prepare-for-extreme-heat-climate-change/?utm_medium=social&utm_source=mastodon&utm_campaign=mastodon_organic

ai6yr,

@5klp471 🤔 Smart!

ai6yr,

@mjausson 🤔

ai6yr,

LOL. "Body bags are the ideal way to treat heat stroke victims because they are waterproof, cool a person about twice as quickly as traditional methods, and compactly contain both the person being cooled and the melting ice" (sorry... LOL from someone who hangs around first responders/etc. too much. It's so practical, yet it freaks people out).

Project for next week, hopefully. Two more (free) sling style chairs for re-slinging. Easy enough to re-do these. They will, however, be a different color, as it is past summer fabric season and I'm just buying the cheapest I can find.

ai6yr,

@jerzone yep, exactly! The hardest part is actually removing the old fabric from the frame. Lots of elbow grease required (soapy water helps too)

ai6yr,

@johnb48 Anywhere you can find Phifertex outdoor fabric (or equivalent). Local stores, online. Anywhere from $18-45 a yard depending on color/pattern.

ai6yr,

Last ones I did came out great. These kind of chairs are so comfortable!

Same chairs, re-slung with new bright orange fabric. Being inspected by the dog next to the fire pit.

ai6yr,

@ukuku They ran out of that color, so I'm on to bright yellow, LOL... eclectic colors are better than BORING gray, at least.

ai6yr,

@johnb48 Approx 1/2 a yard for a chair

I learnt several things from this article, including that in , insurers are banned from using to estimate risk because it would increase premiums too much 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

We need a new # now. We understand the physics of pretty well (with a few notable exceptions) it's we need to work on.
How about ? Who's in?

Report: OpenAI holding back GPT-4 image features on fears of privacy issues

GPT-4's image capabilities can recognize certain individuals, according to NYT.

ai6yr,

@dragonsidedd @arstechnica Yippee! Virtual reality torture rather than being zapped by laser-wielding AI drones! That's an improvement.

ai6yr,

@arstechnica Future conversation with an : "Ah, I recognize you. You're the human who posted those anti-AI posts on Instagram in July of 2023. We know who you are; we have your whole Internet history. We know where you live, what you buy, what you watch; you will be terminated in due time for your anti-AI stance."

Moving on to "Delay and Deflect" (in "Deny, Delay, Deflect") -- IMHO they aren't moving away from change denial, they are merely trying to deflect criticism and delay any substantive change (which will never come, btw).

ai6yr,

@Boyan There truly are a lot of them that don't understand science, who refuse to believe humans can modify the atmosphere, along with others who don't care about anyone else (forgetting they live on the same planet). I hear a lot of "human's can't change the atmosphere", "God will provide", "it's been warmer in the past", "we're coming out of an ice age", "it's a Chinese/Liberal/etc. hoax", "it's good for crops", etc. etc. etc. And when stuff turns south, they go conspiracy theory.

@ai6yr Do you have recommendation for motels in Ventura County with entry directly out onto the parking lot, one story or two max? I have to take a trip to LA for the doctor and think I'll need a place to crash on the way there or back.

Plus for quiet, no dogs kinda places.

ai6yr,

@glightly Hmm, depends on your budget, but SureStay by Best Western Camarillo or Days Inn Camarillo seem like what you are looking for. Direct entry in/out of the hotel parking lot to the rooms, good neighborhood, accessible. Not sure on quiet or dogs though!

Days Inn by Wyndham Camarillo -- direct entry rooms, handicap spaces, accessible.

What a nightmare in the works. HOAs are bad enough. Imagine one wholly focused on forcing residents to be "patriotic." I can't imagine anything more at odds with the founding principles of this country.

@JohnLMacFarlane Okay, I get the Ram 3500 (gigantic vehicle). But... what is with the Kias? Bad visibility? Attractive to bad drivers?
