Ugh!

I sang "1135809" to the tune of "867-5309" making a silly joke an hour ago, and just now realized that I still remember the number. I've accidentally memorized his prisoner number! And now you have too*. Sorry!

The human brain works in weird ways.

(*Your only hope is if you don't sing it. Sing it even once and you're doomed! We still know Mike Jones' Sprint mobile number.)

Watching “The Black Hole” (1979) with a first-timer. And me! I’m a first-timer!

ajkandy,

@virtualbri @tvaziri @CStamp @joesteel voiced by Roddy McDowall and Slim Pickens, no less.

I thought the practical zero-g wire work on the Palomino sets were pretty good, but like Logan’s Run, the way it was shot (film stock, lighting, etc) it felt more like a movie from 1965, more like Fantastic Voyage or Disney’s own 20,000 Leagues.

ajkandy,

@Jyoti It was kind of legendary. Mills-Cockell was also in an avant garde synth group called Syrinx (no relation to the Dutch synth!) There was a C64 synth demo of the theme that circulated for ages.

Do you compost?

#EvanPoll #poll

ajkandy,

@evan I would, if we had municipal composting here like we did back in Calgary. No room / garden to do it here. If/when we get a house we'll definitely do it.

If we were really worried about super-intelligent AI learning to self-replicate and evolve, we probably wouldn't let software developers incorporate code snippets written by ChatGPT. Who knows what kind of subtle, slight modifications -- undetectable to the human mind -- in tens of thousands of samples per day might actually do?

ajkandy,

@evan Given that “AI” at the moment is just autocomplete taken to extremes, I wouldn’t worry. The assigning of conscious intent or any kind of biological imperative to inanimate code is magical thinking and superstition.

More important to worry about AI fed bad data and incentivized by capitalism. Poor facial recognition sold by Amazon identifying innocent people as criminals, Uber testing bad self-driving cars on SF streets without a permit, accidental racial discrimination by banks.

ajkandy,

@stancarey @grammargirl this to me falls under the same mistaken backformation as “orientated” and “coronated.” It was lit in green, therefore greenlit. (similarly: lit by gas, therefore gaslit.)

ajkandy,

@stancarey @grammargirl Actually there is. Coronate is an adjective meaning crown-shaped, its use as a verb has been mistakenly back-formed from the noun “coronation” (a ceremony). The verb is “to crown,” so the past tense is “crowned.” The other verb is “to orient,” past tense “oriented.” Adding extra syllables is like saying “bakified” or “transformated.”

The joy of the live event production and DJ history in my life:

A drunk friend just called me up. "I'm at X Bar. We're trying to remember what it was used to be. I knew you'd know!"

There really needs to be a web app that shows you the history of everything an address used to be.

ajkandy,

@shawnhooper To some extent Google Street View can help because you can click through to see all the past captures of a given point. Other than that, old business records, phone directories or newspaper ads if they’ve been OCRed, if you can look it up by address.

On my walk tonight, I told a guy the surfboard rack on his bike was nifty.

Then I wondered where "nifty" comes from. I would have guessed it was a 1940s or 1950s word, maybe something from WWII. But nope —1868.

The poet who first used it said it was from "magnificat," but the OED is unconvinced. The etymology section says this origin is "unlikely."

    ajkandy,

@grammargirl Nifty (adj): having the properties of nift

Two pics, my mangled blade, and what the saw stop air bag looks like before use.
