Again for people (racists), complaining about falling birth rates:

The birth rate for women over 40 is not falling. The birth rate for women over 30 is not falling.

What's happening, is girls 15 to 17 are having fewer babies. Kids are having fewer kids.

Also, this is an interesting way of saying that "Teen pregnancy is down, due to sex education and contraception."

In 1991 25% of 15 year olds gave birth before they turned 21. That's bad. Now it's 6%. That's better.

@adambkaplan @mekkaokereke In Quebec, subsidized (and regulated) daycares helped increase labor participation, particularly among single parents, and it lifted a lot of families out of poverty. This, in addition to a year of parental leave that can also be split between parents.

The program has flaws re: the early childhood education aspect, but did what it was supposed to do.

There’s a proposal from CAP to create a different US version based on tax credits. https://www.vox.com/2015/9/8/9262901/high-quality-child-care-tax-credit

it's like a scene in a horror movie when you're laying out in your lawn enjoying the sun and idly looking at the grass and then you slowly realize one of the grasses is a foxtail and then the camera pans out and YOUR ENTIRE LAWN IS GREEN WITH FOXTAILS*

*we have to rip these out by hand every spring to keep our dog safe and it's time 😭

I like It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia because every single member of The Gang is absolutely insane—almost psychopathic—and yet they continually debate morals and ethics, not because they actually care, but because they’re desperately trying to disguise their amoral and unethical behaviour.

And, sadly, this is how much of the world works. Most organizations are similar to Paddy’s Pub. What separates The Gang is their incompetence.

ajkandy,
@ajkandy@mastodon.social avatar

@atomicpoet I think Seinfeld kind of pioneered that, but this took it further

Back in the mid-1990s, Atari computers were still extensively used in the electronic music scene. German sequencer company C-Lab licensed the design of the Falcon 030 - Atari’s final personal computer - and manufactured their own version, optimized for their own Notator music production software, with audio, MIDI, and SCSI ports plus a Motorola DSP chip.

The final version, the Mark X, shipped as a sleek 1U rack-style box.

ajkandy,
@ajkandy@mastodon.social avatar

C-Lab became Emagic, Notator became Logic, and Apple bought the company in 2002.

But even though doing audio stuff on Apple products is relatively easy, there’s something to be said for the “dedicated hardware” approach. (Fewer distractions, for one.)

Apple devices, except for the eye-wateringly expensive Mac Pro, are only expandable via Thunderbolt and USB; which means investing in lots of external boxes.

ajkandy,
@ajkandy@mastodon.social avatar

A moderately complex setup to integrate an audio interface, a small MIDI controller, dual monitors and external synthesizers means maxing out all the ports on a Mac Mini, requiring the use of at least one Thunderbolt dock, and possibly additional USB hubs.

Oh and if you want DSP for effects processing with realtime monitoring? Be prepared to drop a couple of grand for proprietary interface/plugin combos and external DSP expanders!

Right now we’re in an interesting time where CPUs are powerful enough to handle large multitrack audio projects on their own, but they suffer a bit from being multitasking machines. I can’t help but wonder if there isn’t a market for a modern C-Lab Falcon; a dedicated music workstation in a small box, running on its own realtime OS, with direct connection to built-in audio and MIDI?

Microphone tech people I need your help. I broke the screw that attached my yeti nano to the desk arm. I don't want to buy a new arm, just the screw. It's a 3/8" apparently. Any idea how this is called (and where I can buy a replacement)?

The broken screw parts in details once detached from the arm

ajkandy,
@ajkandy@mastodon.social avatar

@stephaniewalter Hmm. That part is the mounting stem and it looks like a bespoke part from the arm maker. I would contact them to see if they can ship you a replacement. That said, it doesn’t look like quality metal if it snapped off like that, you might be better off buying a better one. (I have an extra Rode PSA-1 if you want to pay for shipping!)

    "In 1978, the Cray 1 supercomputer cost $7 Million, weighed 10,500 pounds and had a 115 kilowatt power supply. It was, by far, the fastest computer in the world. The Raspberry Pi costs around $70… weighs a few ounces, uses a 5 watt power supply and is more than 4.5 times faster than the Cray 1."

    Okay, sure, but Cray came with a built-in couch to sit on. Checkmate, Raspberries.

    I'm digging the MacOS Sonoma video aerial screensavers which "slow to a stop" when you log in, but they missed the potential for one with entering / travelling / exiting through hyperspace. There could be Star Wars and Star Trek variants of this.

    @grammargirl Hi Mignon! I wonder if you’ve noticed an odd spelling trend online - spaces being omitted between words, but consistently. We’ve seen “alot” and “abit”….a lot. But also “infact” and just today, “incase.” Where do you think this comes from, and why is it becoming more common?
