Russian Foreign Ministry Speaker Maria Zakharova told reporters that if French President Emmanuel Macron sends troops to Ukraine, the Russians will consider them legitimate targets.

"If the French appear in the conflict zone, they will inevitably become a target for the Russian armed forces. It seems to me that Paris already has evidence of this," she added.

Why aren't they considering to transfer them to Ukraine?

They are similar to F16, and they are also configured to use missiles.

amayer,
@amayer@rheinneckar.social avatar

@elCelio It would be much easier for Ukraine to get them more F16s.
There should be enough to go around; more than 4600 have been built.

amayer,

@elCelio "the will not provide aircraft"

Well, why not?
As for 'don't care', there's always the option to pay those countries. Most of them care for money.

I'm not saying don't provide other planes. Just that it will be difficult for Ukraine to implement the necessary logistics for yet another new system, especially one as sophisticated as a modern combat aircraft. It has been more than half a year already, to do that for F16s.

Shouldn't western powers not mark some kind of red line with regard to the russian advance in western-Ukraine, with the assumption that Russia will not risk world war 3 for conquering that part ? Or will in the end EU and NATO just watch while Kyiv and Lviv are overrun by Russian forces ?
The risks are enormous i am aware but that's also true for the scenarios where we let Russia just conquer Ukraine.
@geopolitics

amayer,
@amayer@rheinneckar.social avatar

@ErikJonker @geopolitics I’m all for setting red lines for russia, but there is no real risk that the russians could get to Kyiv any time soon. Much less Lviv.

Horrifying news from Ukraine: According to Ukraine Army Commander Oleksandr Syrsky, Russia has broken through the frontline at Novobakhmutivka in the Donetsk oblast.

You can see the progress on these screenshots from DeepStateMap. First picture is April 10. Second picture is yesterday.

Syrsky mentions lack of equipment as one of the reasons, Ukraine is now retreating.

Mike Johnson truly deserves a Hero of Russia medal.

@randahl No, they have not broken through. Please be careful with the wording.

@t_mkdf @anderspuck @randahl @DeeGLloyd I’m a bit confused. Maybe Biden was opposed to splitting the bill, but since all aid bills passed, I don’t see how that was a defeat for Biden (or some kind of win for Johnson).

randahl, to random
@randahl@mastodon.social avatar

@anderspuck BTW I saw, ATACMS were mentioned directly in the bill. Have you heard anything about actual numbers?

amayer,
@amayer@rheinneckar.social avatar

@anderspuck @DeeGLloyd @randahl Relevant text:

┈┈┈┈
Sec. 505. (a) Transfer Of Long-Range ATACMS Required.—As soon as practicable after the date of enactment of this Act, the President shall transfer long range Army Tactical Missile Systems to the Government of Ukraine to assist the Government of Ukraine in defending itself and achieving victory against the Russian Federation. (1/3)

amayer,
@amayer@rheinneckar.social avatar

(b) Notification.—If the President determines that executing the transfer of long-range Army Tactical Missile Systems to the Government of Ukraine pursuant to subsection (a) would be detrimental to the national security interests of the United States, the President may withhold such transfer and shall notify the congressional defense committees, the Committees on Appropriations and Foreign Relations of the Senate, and the Committees on Appropriations and Foreign Affairs… (2/3)

amayer,
@amayer@rheinneckar.social avatar

of the House of Representatives of such determination.
┈┈┈┈

I think this is important because a) it explicitly mentions long range ATACMS, which Ukraine hasn’t gotten at all and b) the president, should he decide not to deliver them, will now have to explain his decision to the Senate and the House. (At least that's what I guess 'notify' would imply.) (3/3)

amayer,
@amayer@rheinneckar.social avatar

Oh, and also noteworthy is, that this paragraph explicitly mentions "achieving victory against the Russian Federation".

@NatureMC @patkane You don’t have to imagine soldiers with joysticks. That is already daily reality in the war in Ukraine. It’s not going to go away either, because it saves the lives of those soldiers since they don’t have to run around on the battlefield.

No matter how terrible you think those technologies are, they help win battles, so they are going to get used.

amayer,
@amayer@rheinneckar.social avatar

@martinvermeer @VikingChieftain @hanse_mina || also: people trying to be classified as disabled in order to escape drafting.
Hundreds of thousands?

If the total casualties are around 350,000 the number of disabled should be no more then 250,000.
That would leave 250,000 people unaccounted for.

Oh well, I don’t think we will be able to figure it out from here.

amayer,
@amayer@rheinneckar.social avatar

@VikingChieftain @martinvermeer @hanse_mina I agree. But I don’t think those are enough to account for the difference.

The strong dip in 2022 is suspicious, so my guess is that there was something going on with accounting. Maybe the official numbers weren’t as desired and were 'massaged' for some report? And now they are back at normal (+ war casualties).

Maybe someone who can read Russian feels like investigating further. :}

amayer,
@amayer@rheinneckar.social avatar

@anderspuck @kyivindependent Hm. I still think something like C-RAM should work against surface drones. You’d probably need four on any ship to be able to defend against multiple drones.

Theoretically, Russia should have equivalent systems, but from what I have seen, they either only used small arms fire, or those guns simply don’t work as they should (surprise).
