I missed 's filtering ability in . The dired-goto-file works when you aim at one single file, but it is not enough when you have tens of files and you want to "narrow" your view to files that match certain pattern (regex, glob, or fixed string).

Turns out there is a nice package called dired-narrow that does exactly that with very handy defaults.

Give it a shot!

@Mehrad
Or use consult-lines, part of consult. Offers narrowing for all buffers, not just dired.

My supervisor at CERN uses Emacs with a plugin to emulate Vim bindings! 🤯

He is the true winner of the Vim vs. Emacs wars.

And the plugin's name is (probably) 'evil'...

Just updated my desktop to 46, and I have the impression that the display looks sharper now. Can that be true? Did the font display change, or something like that?

Am I the only one who unequivocally thinks that philosophy has made progress? Perhaps I have a different definition of what progress means, but surely I can't be the only one?

The number of theories and arguments that philosophers uncovered, as well as the clarity and breadth of their analyses, is certainly progress.

Progress compared to when? And on what sense does philosophy 'uncover' theories? Why not say 'make up'?
@philosophy @academicchatter

apublicimage,
@apublicimage@berlin.social avatar

@ninokadic
Well coherence is surely not a truth-maker, nor is being part of a tradition. I think the whole idea of progress in philosophy is dubious, it's not science.

I had my first Emacs coaching session with Prot today. It was even better than I could have imagined.

We focused mainly on the minibuffer:

Out:

  • icomplete
  • fido
  • which-key

In:

  • vertico
  • marginalia
  • orderless with customized matching rules for different completion categories.

No, Kant did not point that out. Kant rather argued that we can find out apriori laws precisely because experience is part of the world. And the brain, of course, does draw a distinction between inside and outside. Hegel already pointed that out.

Apparently, Arch finally got GNOME 44! Well, 44.1, so you’re directly up to date.

And I’m wondering: is it a policy for Arch now, to wait for the first point update before shipping a new version of a desktop?

Interesting article on how is already polluting the internet with faked stuff -- and how this relates to the bigger problem that the publishing industry is trying to suppress free access to books and to archived internet sites. In times of faked content circulating freely in the net, it becomes more and more important to retain public access to the "originals" -- books, internet sites, other sources. Is real information going to be a privilege?

Little more hands-on with a certain for some time now.

Once I learned what the "stop sequence" is actually good for, my instinctive ascription of at least a little bit of personality to the thing disappeared immediately.

It does not "know" how to stop by itself.
