Just got this little thing in the mail 😀️ (courtesy of the @risc_v DevBoard Program).

I guess I have some more upstreaming work ahead 😉️ :linux: :riscv:

So I have now published the source code to "Birdies", my latest pet project: a digital scorecard for your games, written in and relying on to make it perfectly usable on devices ⛳️🏌️

It's in a very early stage (it doesn't even have an app icon yet!), but it builds and run fine: https://gitlab.gnome.org/a-wai/birdies

And as a bonus, here's a screenshot of Birdies used for an actual game (yes, there's room for progress on the golf skills as well ☺️ )

Being more of a "low-level software" person, getting used to the concepts underlying GUI apps can be a struggle... But after a few days playing (fighting?) with -rs, widgets and other "weird" stuff, I finally have a kinda-usable app prototype for my new hobby 😁️🏌️⛳️

@postmarketOS I had to check the date, but no, it's not yet April 1st ;)

Congrats on all the hard work this surely required, and welcome to the ball!

Doing some evening hacking, bringing up the @PINE64 with upstream Linux (6.8-rc3) with only a new DTS and no additional patch!

So far it boots with working console output and eMMC/µSD, but that's about it...

@fosdem starts in about 9 hours now, so before I go to bed, I have to remind you all that starting 10:30, the "FOSS on Mobile Devices" devroom will welcome you and host an impressive number of quality talks about .

I'll even present myself, sharing some updates about @mobian at 17:30: https://fosdem.org/2024/schedule/event/fosdem-2024-3290-towards-a-bright-future-with-mobian-/

hasn't even started and we're already debugging random modem issues on a square in Brussels. This is going to be a good weekend!

The Call for Papers for the "FOSS on Mobile Devices" devroom at @fosdem runs until the end of this week! Now is definitely the time to submit your talk proposals at https://fosdem.org/submit 😉️

Don't be shy, all free/open-source projects related to smartphones and tablets are welcome!

In for the @debian MiniDebConf!

The talk schedule is at https://wiki.debian.org/DebianEvents/gb/2023/MiniDebConfCambridge#Schedule and a live stream is available at https://onsite.live.debconf.org/player.html

I'll be discussing @mobian and how we can improve itself for at 11:30 UTC

Interestingly, a significant chunk of https://www.jeffgeerling.com/blog/2023/so-you-want-make-raspberry-pi-killer applies to the "market", especially the section about software support.
Actually, you could replace with in this section and it would still make a lot of sense! Kudos to @purism engineers for that 😉️

Since https://fosstodon.org/@linmob/111437486318142093 is not entirely unpopular: If you are wondering if I recommend this setup: I'm torn. Two batteries make the PinePhone Pro more useful, and getting once one gets used to the keyboard, it's nice to type on.
If you have a PinePhone Pro that's sitting in a drawer, go for it - if not, there are lots of micro laptops out there that may be better by having things like a backlit keyboard, a pointing device, or a slightly bigger, not 2:1 screen.

awai,
@awai@fosstodon.org avatar

@martijnbraam @linmob I thought the same, until I saw the price: 510€ with the SoM included + 130€ for shipping to EU... 😐️

awai,
@awai@fosstodon.org avatar

@martijnbraam @linmob well look at the topton L4: not upgradable, but the same exact case, Intel-based and... half the price + free shipping!

J'y parlerai de l'utilisation de Debian dans les systèmes embarqués (et donc un petit peu de @mobian bien sur 😉️), et il y aura plein d'autres confs intéressantes !

Does anyone else have too much fun naming their devices?

The home speaker thing (aka "speaker of the house") is named "Nancy"

The bluetooth headset I use for remote meetings is "Can you hear me now"

My laptop is "lappy" (ok, wasn't creative with that one 😅)

IoT-only wifi network with "smart" things is "skynet"

I'm sure there are far better ones than these, please share!

awai,
@awai@fosstodon.org avatar

@craftyguy I'm afraid I'm being way too serious: my main workstation is "skynet", the home/file server is "jarvis", and the mini-PC acting as set-top box is "wall-e", etc...

agx, (edited ) to linuxphones

After lots of cleanup over the past releases I'm inclined to switch 's main branch to track git rather than the latest stable version as I can then catch up with new wlroots features faster. Stable releases would then be cut from a wlroots-0.xy branch tracking the stable wlroots version. Good idea?

@agx Whatever makes development easier/the smoothest is likely the best option

awai,

@poVoq @Shatur The PBP doesn't include a modem (so no LTE antennas), has only 1 (cheap) camera, bigger display/form factor, no touchscreen, smaller eMMC, cheaper audio codec...

Also, the PPP's display is way better (and therefore costly) in both contrast and color-correctness to the OG PP one.

Comparing the PPP & PBP prices based only on the fact they use the same SoC really doesn't make any sense unless you look at all the differences, and even then, it's dubious...

i think the linux kernel might be missing some sort of way to declare the sequencing of drivers in terms of temporal interdependency. this is the second time i encounter where the module load order matters. the first time was with external bridges and internal display engines on imx8m

awai,
@awai@fosstodon.org avatar

@mntmn Isn't that what fw_devlink is meant for? (unless I completely misunderstood the whole thing, which is definitely possble)

Linux-first, Coreboot, EDK II... Looks like we'll soon have another lovely tablet and a perfect target for @mobian !

I would love to see an LTE modem integrated in such a device though, so I could finally get rid of my SGo 2
