A while ago, I read about the psycholgical effect that kicks in when someone tries to fight for a good cause, but then makes a tiny mistake.

We are very hard on hypocrisy because our brains like when things add up.

I.e. a climate activist with a plastic cup triggers much harder than Elon taking a 5 minute flight in his private jet every other day.

The first feels wrong, while the second just meets our expectations.

I can't stop seeng this everywhere ever since.

This is an article that took a lot of strength to write and I might take it down again. But I felt like it is an article that is very necessary right now. https://bastianallgeier.com/notes/grandpa

Sometimes marketing is all about waiting long enough for your audience to forget about the 80s and 90s.

I love how ALDI celebrates this brilliant new design that saves 40% of plastic by removing the plastic lid.

The leader of the German conservatives introduced the idea to collaborate with the far right AfD yesterday. He knows that he won’t get kicked out or replaced as the party leader. He will paddle back a bit after some backlash and that’s it. It doesn’t matter that he just meant on a community level either. The idea to collaborate with Nazis is now officially speakable without consequences. I feel sick!!

German news in 2023: Despite all the rain this winter, the ground water level is too low and experts demand a national plan to fight drinking water issues. This is fine.

Holy shit. VanMoof ran out of money and is currently in a legal process to avoid bankruptcy. Their app to control bike settings is already stopping to work properly for some users. It seems that you can still lock and unlock, but this is a shitshow: https://mastodon.notsobig.co/@phill/110701490478043590

Smart home stuff, smart bikes, smart whatever tech that gets bricked because the company folds is just the worst.

This printer review is hilarious: https://www.theverge.com/23642073/best-printer-2023-brother-laser-wi-fi-its-fine

We had one of those printers that just printed fine for years before it broke down. We replaced it with a Canon printer that feels like one of those first ink-jet printers. It works roughly 10% of the time and it is such a pain in the ass. How can this printer problem still be a thing in 2023?

Google Domains is shutting down. The Google service graveyard is truly impressive. They kill their projects more regularly than most people floss.

How would someone ever trust them with important parts of their business? It’s like renting an office that has a high probability of burning down next week.

Lovely German project to visualise utopian future versions of cities all around the world: https://realutopien.info/visuals/

I want more of this. More positive self-fulfilling prophecies. I also think that it's totally fine to positively overshoot and be naive about it. Why shouldn't we be allowed to just dream big here?

When the effects of populism turn up in your family it’s especially scary. I shared a fact check by the Fraunhofer Institute on claims by a conservative/right CSU politician on a German TV show here yesterday. I also sent it to a family group. Afterwards a family member called me and we had a pretty long, interesting conversation about that show and the fact check.

I couldn’t be less interested in Bluesky - another Jack Dorsey experiment. As if we learned nothing from the past.

But it’s also interesting to see how Mastodon‘s flaws are now used as an argument. No quote feature? Instances are hard to find? We need an entirely new platform with better UX. As if this was unfixable.

It’s the restlessness of an industry that no longer seems to be able to overcome any form of discomfort and leaves at the slightest hint of hype for a new place.

Our town is finally supposed to get fiber access, but the company who installs the cables needs 40% sign ups. All households that signed up will then get the connection for free in return for a 2-yr contract. The sign up phase runs out in July. So far only 30% signed up. The cable dude told me that they struggle with all the old folks and folks who think that a 16 MBit connection is fast enough for the future. 😭

We use Paddle to sell @getkirby and while they are great in general, they've replaced humans with an AI bot for support requests.

This is what our clients must go through if they contact Paddle instead of us. (real redacted protocol) We can only apologize. It's embarrassing to get those protocols. It also causes additional work for us to read through this.

We told Paddle about it without success so far. Please, don't do this. Don't throw a chat bot at customers if this is the result.

TIL a teacher for religion in our school invited a creationist who taught the kids about dinosaurs and mammoths potentially living 300 aD together with humans and came up with all kinds of "evidence": The big flood created a perfect climate for those creatures and stone carvings in Angkor Wat show Stegosaurus-like animals together with humans. Parents luckily instantly protested and now she has to correct that.

Our son isn't attending religion. I think we made the right call there 🙈

Reading the latest thread by Mastodon‘s CTO @renchap made me realize once more how small the team behind all this is and how they really try to listen to feedback and get it right.

It’s incredible what they‘ve achieved. It’s literally David vs Goliath compared to other social media platforms.

We should always keep that in mind when some things are not 100% smooth.

We get an ad-free, algo-free, tracker-free, lunatic-billionaire-free space in return 💛

On such hot days, we used to tightly close our German shutters (Rollläden) as a heat shield. Then a couple years ago, a builder told us that this is just wrong. Air between shutter and window can get up to 90 degrees, damage the shutters and the window and heat up rooms significantly more. You are supposed to leave a gap at the bottom for circulation. Works wonders and seems so obvious in hindsight. I still see them tightly shut everywhere. Don’t know where this is coming from.

The Meta discussions here boil down to a simple problem: There are three target groups …

A) wants the Fediverse to be huge and successful.
B) wants the Fediverse to be a niche product.
C) wants the Fediverse to be huge, successful and a niche product.

I'm going through various AI coding helpers for a few months now. I want to keep an open mind and understand if there's something really mind-blowingly helpful. But so far, I haven't found anything that is more than "nice to have". I think it's also a lot about the tasks that we need to solve at @getkirby Coding speed is never really an issue. That's why I don't massively profit from autocompletion help. The obstacles are always conceptual questions. Did you find anything indispensable for you?

Yesterday, I got some really nice comments after I wrote about my social media fatigue.💛

Here are such great people and 99% of the times I get more energy out of this place than I put into it.

It's strange that I let a few ruin this for me.

I guess my fatigue also isn't so much about just social media but ALL THE NEWS.

It's about knowing that things could be better, but we actively choose to make them worse.

I blocked a few people and added a BS filter and I feel a lot better today.
