ngl, have a bit of FOMO about this year, but it just wasn't possible for me to make the trip. Maybe next year.

Moving to the EU is something I would love to do but the legal overhead is daunting.
Plus it's hard to get an EU org to hire an overseas worker.

berensn,
@berensn@noc.social avatar

@thisismissem
I've been trying to get hired over there while still in the US, which makes it very hard.
I just took a role as a security engineer, after eight months of looking, just so i could transition into that specialty from my generic cybersecurity operations role.
My future strategy is going to be get hired at an international org and transition overseas internally. It might be easier that way.

So I wrote a thing last night, that's very personal, and pretty scary to publish, but I'm publishing it for me, if you like it, great, if you hate it, so what.

Becoming the ‘sober friend’

@thisismissem
Becoming sober is a hard path. Social pressure to drink is intense, people questioning why you don't drink is tough to deal with, its none of their business but somehow they still feel they're entitled to a justification. Those are the external pressures to drink while you're trying to eliminate the internal physical and psychological habit of drinking.
Its not easy, some days its all you can do hang on, taking it a second at a time.

While AA does exist, my personal opinion is that therapy, especially therapy focused on addiction is best. If you want an alternative to AA, smartrecovery.org is a very popular, secular, group therapy format that can be in person or online.

    The AI that is replacing people either doesn't even work right a lot of the time or isn't even the right technology to replace people in the first place.

    Its like companies are afraid of being left behind in the AI race or that their competition is going to suddenly gain 1000x the profit when they shoehorn AI into their workflow

    berensn,
    @berensn@noc.social avatar

    @AAKL @Cbsnews
    True, which is why it baffling to watch since companies are typically more conservative when it comes to adopting new technology.

    What good is the 14th Amendment if noone is brave enough to use it 🤬

    A Colorado judge on Friday allowed Donald Trump to remain on the ballot in the state's election next year, but found that he "engaged in insurrection" by sparking the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol by his supporters.

    @Joe_Hill @Free_Press @Teri_Kanefield
    What's the point of the 14th amendment if it lets the people it should most apply to off the hook?
    The judge carved out a specific exception for the person who committed an insurrection.

    Thanks for the insight though, I'll keep it in mind when I do get an interview.

    People go to Stack Overflow because the docs and error messages are garbage. TLDR exists because the docs and error messages are garbage. People ask ChatGPT for help because the docs and error messages are garbage. We are going to lose a generation of competence and turn programming into call-and-response glyph-engine supplicancy because we let a personality cult that formed around the PDP-11 in the 1970s convince us that it was pure and good that docs and error messages are garbage.

    berensn,
    @berensn@noc.social avatar

    @Itty53 @benlindsay @hyc @mhoye
    The majority of technical documentation I've come across is uber high level and so abstract it loses meaning.
    Documentation is getting better, especially when it includes examples so you get an idea of what the high level abstraction actually means.

    berensn,
    @berensn@noc.social avatar

    @Itty53 @benlindsay @hyc @mhoye

    I don't need arcanely abstract function documentation, nor do I have the time to pry apart what the documentation authors mean when they write documentation like that. Functional documentation is more useful to a majority of users than high level abstract documentation that is useful only to a minority of users.

    berensn,
    @berensn@noc.social avatar

    @Itty53 @benlindsay @hyc @mhoye

    Calling people not wanting to parse high density abstract documentation isn't lazy, it's using their time on what they deem important. Calling someone lazy for wanting a functional example of how to use a library or function instead of delving into the docs to decode their deep secrets and understand all their aspects reeks of intellectual snobbery.

    There should be exemptions that can be applied for if you're a person who does this sort of work, or if you handle classified docs.

    Otherwise if you want to avoid searches, overnight ship your laptop and other stuff across the border and pick it up on the other side.
