You're going to eat a cheeseburger.

You can choose between two cheeseburgers: one will cause a cow and its calf to die, the other won't.

Which one would you choose?

Go :vegan:

beto,
@beto@2c.taoetc.org avatar

@vik not at all.

I'd rather not bring into existence animals that would have a miserable life, 20x shorter than it should be, and that die in fear.

Do you also support people breeding dogs to fight? Because you could use the exact same argument to justify that.

beto,
@beto@2c.taoetc.org avatar

@vik you still kill them. You still treat them like things that exist for your benefit.

Are there therapists who specialize in helping children who are stressed out giving tech support to their parents?

My mom is a mathematician. She can program w/ punch cards. But, she & Dad just don't keep up with tech anymore. Drives me nuts.

Gave my dad an iPhone for Christmas. They HATE it. Probably would hate any phone. Now they say it's recording their conversations.🙄

Dad holds down the buttons on the side when he picks it up. Activates the voice assistant... they think it's a hacker.

beto,
@beto@2c.taoetc.org avatar

@futurebird I've been running an email server for the family since 2000. Yep, 24 years.

My mom still pings me once a month asking if the email from the "email administrator" telling her to do something is legit.

I always say "mom, I run your email. We talk every week. Any message about your email server is a scam. If there's any trouble I'll tell you".

She still keeps asking. But I prefer this to her being scared of asking and installing some malware that steals her money.

@Quinnypig when I worked at Facebook we'd see all metrics spike 4% on daylight savings... because metrics were computed on California timezone.

I bought a mattress from a brand called Avocado (https://www.avocadogreenmattress.com/).

My manager said it was a terrible idea, because the mattress would be really hard for a while, be perfect for one day, and after that it would be very squishy. 😄

Edit: wrong link!

Hey makers of all kinds! What’s your favorite instrument, software, or tool of any kind you use to make music? I’d love to know

beto,

@DoctorDeathray the Teenage Engineering #OPZ is my favorite. I've probably written 200+ songs on it.

But if I could have only one instrument, I think it would be a baritone ukulele.

    "Yes…fantasy is escapist, and that is its glory. If a soldier is imprisoned by the enemy, don’t we consider it his duty to escape? The moneylenders, the knownothings, the authoritarians have us all in prison; if we value the freedom of the mind and soul, if we’re partisans of liberty, then it’s our plain duty to escape, and to take as many people with us as we can.”

    @mibwright my favorite fact about Brazil: if you get caught trying to escape from prison there's no extra punishment, because the law understands that wishing for freedom is not a crime; it's just part of being human.

    beto,
    @beto@2c.taoetc.org avatar

    @RickiTarr my favorite breakfast is what me and my partner call "mega bagel": an everything bagel with cashew spread, hummus, avocado, cucumbers, capers, tomato, and everything else we can find in the fridge.

    My usual is home made granola with coconut yogurt.

    Right. mail-tester.com now gives my mail server 10/10. If my next email to my GMail-using friend ends up in her spam folder, I shall be sending a strongly-worded letter to Messrs. Page and Brin. Which will end up in their spam folders. Damn. Haven't thought that through.

    TLS, SPF, DKIM, and DMARC; Oh, my! No wonder so many people just use GMail. Oh, wait! Maybe there's a reason GMail keeps giving us new hurdles to jump…

    beto,
    @beto@2c.taoetc.org avatar

    @katyswain I've been running my own mail server for 23 years. I also get a 10/10, but every time I email someone's Gmail account it will go to spam unless they have emailed me first.

    It's my constant reminder that big corporations will screw open standards and silo their users for profit.

    Psst, you no longer need JavaScript to create an exclusive accordion!

    As of Chrome 120 you can give <details> elements a name value.

    Just like radio buttons, those with the same name will form a group, of which only one can be chosen at the same time.

    https://developer.chrome.com/docs/css-ui/exclusive-accordion

    Exclusive Accordion (aka “named <details>”) is also supported in Safari 17.2 and up.

    Recording of the exclusive accordion in action.

    @bramus what about Firefox?

    So sad to see the proprietary Internet coming back and people simply ignoring other browsers.

    Maybe people should also add to their website footers "better visualized with Chrome 120+ and 1024x768" as well...

    beto,
    @beto@2c.taoetc.org avatar

    @bramus you said "you no longer need JavaScript to create an exclusive accordion"

    That's only true on an internet where no one uses Firefox.

    Thirty years of Internet have shown me that:

    1. Self hosting is always worth the trouble.
    2. Open source is always a better option in the long run.
    beto,
    @beto@2c.taoetc.org avatar

    @simon_brooke I agree (though I think self-hosting on cloud is better than nothing).

    I've used https://hoppy.network/ in the past to host services at home, you get a public IP for $8/month. There are cheaper solutions. But running servers is challenging — users need to manage upgrades, backups, security issues.

    We need to build tools that make this easy for non-technical people.

    beto,
    @beto@2c.taoetc.org avatar

    @simon_brooke I'm working on a blogging platform/social media that tries to help with that:

    1. Users run a binary in a computer connected to the internet (I'm planning to use https://redbean.dev/).
    2. Friends find each other and exchange data via WebRTC (requires exchanging usernames via some other channel first).
    3. Users discover people via their friends, growing their network by adding friends-of-friends.
    4. User data is automatically backed up in their friend's instances.
