@thelinuxcast Ask them why Google is removing the dialer and other bits out of AOSP then. 🤣 Breaking what is actually open source isn't very commendable.

@dhrystone@techhub.social avatar

Returned my unopened (duplicate) to Costco today and got a full refund.

My advice to everyone - don’t buy this device. Apple have the best implementation of an interface in terms of prettiness and speed, but the worst implementation of an actually efficient and useful operational environment in the entire ecosystem. They’ve shown up to someone else’s game wearing a Burger King crown and expecting everyone to play by THEIR rules. and have already given them the 🖕and are NOT integrated. It’s fucking horrible. It really is.

I’m still trying to force feed myself the koolaid with my remaining ATV but I fear that very, very soon it will be put back in its box and Craigslisted off to some gibbering goose who doesn’t know there’s far better tech out there.

I can’t wait for the new and Max. I have too many streaming devices already, but not as many as I have or . Still have to catchup.

bitterseeds,
@bitterseeds@fosstodon.org avatar

@dhrystone I've never nor will I ever buy something like Apple TV, I have all the clients on my TV, XboxOneX and PS5. I looked at a friend's Apple TV and couldn't understand buying something that left Apple in total gatekeeping control.

> Ubuntu Desktop 20.04 recommends 4 GB RAM. Yet the Ubuntu Server 20.04’s minimum RAM requirement is only 512 MB. Do they fill Desktop Edition with that much bloatware or services?

TIL

https://dietpi.com/forum/t/why-do-software-nowadays-take-so-much-more-memory-and-processing-power/4514

bitterseeds,
@bitterseeds@fosstodon.org avatar

@Barredo servers shouldn't run Xorg/Wayland and servers won't be using FF, Chrome and other desktop apps. So comparing any requirements between a server and a desktop is kind of pointless. Not trying to be a jerk, just saying these are 2 different beasts. I do wonder how a server could get away with 512GB of ram ... it must not do much of anything.

dhrystone, to Mac
@dhrystone@techhub.social avatar

Need to find a free app for #Mac that does this with the system tray icons (I can’t remember the official name for this section of the desktop on MacOS). Screenshot shown. Basically just shrink the padding for all of them. I don’t need ANY other functionality, no hiding icons for example. Just more compact padding.

bitterseeds,
@bitterseeds@fosstodon.org avatar

@dhrystone I looked for such a beast and couldn't come up with much. I ended up just using Bartender to unclutter.

bitterseeds,
@bitterseeds@fosstodon.org avatar

@EpiphanicSynchronicity @dhrystone Oh. I use Bartender already. I want access to those apps via the menu bar but honestly, iStat Menus is what I want to view all the time and iStat Menus takes up quite a bit of space. I do think Apple should have come up with a solution since they put that big ass notch at the top of the newer Macs. They caused the problem, so they should have had an option like Bartender to fix it.

bitterseeds,
@bitterseeds@fosstodon.org avatar

@dhrystone @EpiphanicSynchronicity Yeah, it's a bit much for what it does honestly. I have an X1 Thinkpad with Linux on it and a AMD desktop workstation running Linux. I've paid for exactly one app outright which is Master PDF Viewer/editor and that was mainly because I hate Okular and the rest of the PDF tools under Linux kind of suck balls.

Welp after less than a day I moved the new AppleTV out of the lounge room and into the game cave where I can play with it in peace. Honestly the interface just isn’t as useful/practical as GoogleTV, slick as it is. Don’t like the remote either. It’s absolute failure to support live TV in the ATV interface is annoying as hell. So many people have danced about stating how wonderful the damn thing is. Apparently this is merely another example of blind fanboyism. Again, it IS slick. Just not as useful.

I think I might write up a far longer post about it on my website once I’ve had a few more days to give it a solid chance.

Speaking of remote, I wish to hell I could just continue to use the Alexa Pro remote I got for the FireStick, but it works neither 100% with the TV nor with the AppleTV. Shame as it’s the most comfortable-to-hold remote I’ve ever used. FireStick remotes in general are super comfy. Pity the FireStick interface itself < GTV.

So I've been talking about qtile crashing over the course of the last few months. It has happened across distros, so it wasn't :opensuse: related.

So after some investigation, I found that it was caused by a too many files open error.

Increased that from 1024 to 50000. Hopefully, that fixes it. Never seen that error before.

@majorlinux I would say because wiretapping landlines hasn't been effective in at least 10 years. And now they want to do the same to mobile. bitterseeds,
@bitterseeds@fosstodon.org avatar

@dhrystone @lifehasleft When you are being used by the ruling classes in the U.S. ... you get a LOT of backing $$$ wise and all that. Congress could amend or pass a new law to negate it but the House won't do it until the MAGAs are out ... hopefully in '24. It also helps that SCOTUS has NO ethics or ethics rules and the MAGAs have a 6-3 majority. Honestly, the court should be expanded to 12 and evened out a bit. McConnell fucked us all by holding back Obama's pick. It's all a shit show.

    California state Senate is taking up a terrible, terrible bill -- a link tax -- that purports to save journalism but in fact rewards financial manipulators. I asked the legislator who represents me to recognize this and help hill this legislation: https://dangillmor.com/2023/06/25/california-journalism-preservation-act-rewards-looters-not-communities/

    @dangillmor They could save journalism by breaking up the monopolies that control what sees print and coverage. A link tax is just another stupid idea.
