    @grivettcarnac I thought you should go down all the stairs (don't take elevator).

    The fire department has ladders and cranes but apparently they only go up to about 6th or 7th floor, and depending on landscaping/trees may not be able to reach some apartments.

    Bit of info for people on the front.

    I was uncertain on website mention about what "access" to RAT kits at our community health locations meant. Would they give me a kit or just do a test on me there?

    RATs are hard to find, and our boxes from last year are almost depleted.

    So I called, and they don't have RAT kits at community health sites now, they've been moved to library branches. Website is out of date. FYI

    bjb,
    @bjb@fosstodon.org avatar

    @ottaross If you're talking about those green boxes of five tests, I see my pharmacy(*) has some at the cash, and they just handed me one when I asked.

    Speaking of those tests, I just used up a few tests recently (people I occasionally come in contact with were coming down with covid so I tested myself) - I think the test liquid is seeping out of the capsules, there is less of it in each cspsule now. So they definitely expire.

    There are moments when I try to remind myself of my luck, having the comforts of a citizen in a modern, developed-country and to live a non-precarious socio-economic status.

    There is no more resonant moment of that than when I climb into bed. A roof over my head, warmth, and enough space to stretch out comfortably. A lot of people don't have those things. Bed time here, so g'night.

    If you want to play with laser cutters, buy properly designed laser machines from reputable manufacturers, seek out training, and have good answers to beam, fume and fire safety. Don't buy rays of blinding from Honest Ron's Amazon Emporium.

    @dancinyogi Bad advice for "every instance". But pick your battles and try not to piss people off because every antagonistic interaction has a cost.
    If you can make your point in a constructive way, do it that way.
    Realize that at the beginning of your career, you may benefit from more experience to expand your viewpoint.
    But if after consideration you want to be "not nice" ... do it!

    @TessForeverBlue @teamheardle My friend loves his vacuum, it has a plastic bin that collects the dirt, he can remove it, empty it, and wash it instead of changing bags.

    Consider getting a vacuum with reversible air flow, so you can fill air mattresses quickly and easily.

    I like my regular vacuum, motor and dirtbag on wheels, with longish hose and beater head and bunch of attachments to direct/concentrate air flow.

    There are other types, small hand model, central vacuum.

    bjb,
    @bjb@fosstodon.org avatar

    @TessForeverBlue @teamheardle I also bought a teensy vacuum, meant for cleaning electronics, but I've misplaced the air flow attachments. Should be good for small crevices like window tracks on horizontally sliding windows, as well as keyboards and inside computers, one I find the attachments again.

    bjb,
    @bjb@fosstodon.org avatar

    @Rasta @TessForeverBlue Yeah my friend has a shopvac and loves that too. Seems a bit large for regular household usage though.

    The handheld model is good for cars and other places potentially far from household power outlets (battery powered).

    bjb,
    @bjb@fosstodon.org avatar

    @TessForeverBlue @teamheardle Whatever vacuum you get, choose one with lots of power. It sucks trying to vacuum with an under-powered vacuum. Well, bad wording. The good vacuum sucks, heh.

    Anyway. Get the powerful vacuum.

    You won't need a beater head on it if you don't have carpets or upholstery to vacuum.

    bjb,
    @bjb@fosstodon.org avatar

    This is an attempt to convince young people who object to excessive capitalism, to avoid talking to older people who object to excessive capitalism.
    It is an attempt to convince younger people that "all" older people are the cause of society's ills so that they won't learn from what has and hasn't worked in the way of protests.
    There are lots of older people who have protested and are protesting. They would be thrilled to work with the upcoming generation on this.

    I suppose I am looking for a bit of validation here. I wear a mask to the grocery/pharmacy/etc. My father is very ill, my mother isn't so great, and I visit them often. I wear a mask so I don't catch COVID and spread it to them. I guess the reaction I get around here for wearing a mask is getting to me. I'm being called paranoid, ridiculous, etc. Not one person wears a mask here, from what I have seen.
    Remind me, please, that I'm NOT being ridiculous. I'm surrounded by those who say otherwise!

    bjb,

    @dancinyogi @cwgrody
    Yeh it rendered the person asking me speechless too, when I said I was taking advantage of the opportunity to wear it while it is still legal (can't find the reference, but just before covid hit, Montreal was just bringing in a law to make wearing a face cover during a riot illegal. But who defines when there is a "riot"?)

    Seems like Montreal police are still buying and installing surveillance cameras, waiting for the chance to make face coverings illegal again.

    Good morning everyone. Its friday and the weekend will be here in a few hours. I hope the end of the week is wonderful and awesome for you. Please make time to relax and just be in your own space. That is one of the most peaceful things. Always be kind.

    Today we are gonna be talking about the Einstein Ring.

    An Einstein Ring is a remarkable outcome of Einstein's general theory of relativity. When the observer, the gravitational lens, and the distant source align in a straight line, it gives rise to a ring-shaped image known as an Einstein ring. This phenomenon occurs due to gravitational lensing, where the gravitational influence of a foreground massive entity, like a galaxy or galaxy cluster, bends the light from the distant source. Consequently, a distorted image of the source is produced. The formation of a ring-like image is an extraordinary case of the precise alignment of the source, the lens, and the observer. It shows those regions of space that would otherwise remain hidden.

    bjb,
    @bjb@fosstodon.org avatar

    @Quietgirl82
    I was at a science museum in Sudbury recently, probably Science North, and in one interactive display demonstrating gravitational lensing, I manipulated the view on the screen to show an Einstein ring!

    Basically the light from the far object flows around the gravitational lens on all sides and comes together, reconverges, towards the viewer. When you move the gravitational lens to one side, the light ring thins and splits on that side and all goes to the other side.
