@blakeashleyjr@fosstodon.org

I am a DevOps Engineer that has traditionally specialized in web applications (WebOps), specifically massive, complex, popular WordPress sites that should have been a static webpage.

I am currently coding in the Go programming language and loving it.

I spend my free time writing here, working on my homelab, training in Jiu-Jitsu, reading, or planning my next backpacking trip.

I am looking into hosting a instance. Already got a nice domain for it and have the general idea how to do it. Anything I should know before starting?

@kris what's your plan for hosting it?

If @protonprivacy is serious about the recovery email/numbers being optional, they should remove this non-dismissable (dark pattern) warning in their settings tbh

It's even worse now that it shows an orange dot on the security center sidebar icon in the inbox as well, there's no escape! Let me accept the risk!

blakeashleyjr,
@blakeashleyjr@fosstodon.org avatar

@jonah @protonprivacy not revealing your identity to the government even under threat of warrant is not a standard threat model, in my opinion. If it is part of your threat model, it's your responsibility not to be stupid.

I gotta say since switching to FOSS finance tool, Actual Budget, I've been really happy with the experience. They've struck a nice balance between minimal, but powerful.

I am considering building a home media box from scratch but don't know what direction to take. I want modern apps, codecs, that kind of thing.

Can you build an android TV box from scratch? Kodi?

I was rushing to take the bus and my phone decided to run away from me and it just had a nasty fall alongside some bouncing and rolling.

Thankfully, not permanent damage was taken! Just a few scratches in the screen protector. :blobfoxcomfyhappy:

@joel phones seem to be much sturdier than they used to be. Do you find the same to be true?

@joel when I was younger, I felt like every other phone I had exploded upon contact with the ground.

restic to the rescue. Restored 5 GB from a snapshot (one hour old) in 5 mins and the .zsh_history file there was intact. 😅

@underlap great work! Keeping your dotfiles in a git remote also helps protect you from things like this.

    Do you have an opinion on manifest v3 @jonah? I am going to give ublock lite a chance. Google's implementation aside, seems like a move in the right direction, no?

    @jonah @privacyguides thanks. Not for me at the moment. My uBlock is customized to the max on Firefox.

    Seems like it may be a good bet for the less tech/privacy interested folks in our lives, no? Set the defaults and leave it.

    Arista 7050 in the rack, along with a lot of rearranging to get all the power into the bottom.

    I had an extra full-length shelf, so I used that, since the switch weighs a ton. The docs say it can hang from the front ear brackets in a 2-post rack, or from both front & back brackets in a 4 post rack. My rack has 4 posts and they don't look strong. The rack is too deep for it to reach the back posts as well.

    I should be able to close the whole thing up, for the first time in a year!

    Ok maybe it's a tad bit early for New Year's Resolutions, but I'm looking for recommendations on a personal task manager. I started using Obsidian this year and it's been a game changer for documentation of all the things (personal, work and otherwise).

    But not finding a groove for my todo lists there.

    Todoist? Microsoft Tasks? Is Apple Notes good enough? Anything opensource? I can self-host, too.

    ironicbadger, to random
    @ironicbadger@techhub.social avatar

    it's important to reflect every now and again.

    i've had heated discussions with friends about "just settling" and “being happy with what you have". that's just not me.

    i enjoy the chase and pushing my comfort zone and most importantly, learning new stuff and sharing it too. inspiring others to install linux for the first time, or smoke a brisket themselves, or take to the race track or whatever it might be - that's what gets me out of bed in the morning. but you gotta speak about these things from experience, and there's only one way to get that!

    blakeashleyjr,
    @blakeashleyjr@fosstodon.org avatar

    @ironicbadger I think the trick is doing both at the same time. "I am happy with what I have" and "I can't wait to improve myself and my situation" can live happily beside each other.

    In fact, I think that is the only way to flourish. It also allows you to relax on holidays and weekends while loving to work during the week, at least most of the time.

    stfn, to homelab
    @stfn@fosstodon.org avatar

    I finally worked out out a way how to use with both local access, and via VPN.

    Dashy allows to create subpages, and so right now I have a main page with links pointing locally (192.168.0.XXX), and a subpage with links pointing at the VPN IP of my homelab. This way I can easily switch between dashboards.

    This has been bugging me for some time, I am so happy to find a clean solution.

    It's described in the docs how to make subpages: https://dashy.to/docs/pages-and-sections/

    Screenshot of my Dashy homelab dashboard with a list of services that I use. But this is the subdashboard for use via the tailscale VPN. The links to service point to the VPN IP of my homelab.

    @stfn What you need is split horizon DNS. One link wherever you are, and it always routes to the right place.

    @chris Unfortunately, you won't be able to run docker on an iPad, so that's a no go.

    You could, however, set it up on a server at home or vps and remote in with something like blink.sh (https://blink.sh/).

    My Christmas wish: a halfway measure between Qubes and every other OS. The Qubes model (nested virtualization with color-coded VMs, separate networking settings, etc.), but with KVM and Wayland.

    Designed for normal people who may not have their lives in danger, but want to have a privacy-focused OS without losing most of the comforts of modern Linux.

    blakeashleyjr,
    @blakeashleyjr@fosstodon.org avatar

    @jonah I wonder if anyone is trying anything like this?

    Seems like Distrobox (https://github.com/89luca89/distrobox) plus NixOS or Silverblue would do the job.

    Obviously Podman/Docker is less secure than a full VM but it is far better than nothing.
