Left from #PyConUS about 33 hrs ago. Had a scratchy throat this morning w/ a negative test and just now have a positive test.

I went out with various groups, unmasked, throughout the weekend. This was a risk I was willing to take. Still, I'm glad I was wearing a mask in the convention center around folks who did not choose to take that same risk.

I'm gonna go rest now.

@tylerdave Dave, I really appreciate you sharing this to help us all know more about our exposure and calibrate our choices accordingly. I have just taken an antigen test this evening (negative) and will test again a few times over the next few days, given the exposure.

I hope you have a full and quick recovery, and if you want some suggestions I may have some. Glad you are resting.

I asked my small biz customers to pay by check or e-check and many actually have! I have to invoice them separately so it’s tedious but the real ones are down. well, the real ones plus the lady from Texas who told me she was happy to start getting in the habit of paying for things by check due to the 15 minute city people eventually using credit cards to shut down commerce from longer distances 🤗

@seachanger I am interested in possibly buying some shelf-stable salmon - https://schoolhousefish.com/shop/tongass-wild-alder-smoked-coho is intriguing! Is the label shown there the only label on the package? Or is there an additional nutritional label with estimated calories etc.? That would help me decide on order size. Thanks!

This new short fantasy story by @bpladek was so captivating. A compelling, closely-observed piece - I laughed aloud at:

'He tried to sound careless.... "Pretty sexist of me, too, right?"....

“Nah,” said Adrian, in the tone that meant, I hadn’t thought of it, but yes.'

I think this will resonate with a lot of readers who wrestle with questions about representation and OwnVoices in fiction.

It's weird and cryptic, but I have to share: I see that some people do some mostly-good things, and I suspect that some mostly-bad people are making them do them.

Some day I'll probably write a book about it. Or at least a draft blog post that I'll never publish.

In the meantime, I think that I won't ask the people who are doing the mostly-good things too many questions about it.

brainwane,
@brainwane@social.coop avatar

@aharoni I am, of course, incredibly curious.

    Revisiting and appreciating @HeyChelseaTroy 's https://chelseatroy.com/2023/04/21/whats-the-point-of-tech-conferences/

    "concentrate the right groups of people into a space to catalyze conversations that lead to Big Things"

    "Cons become worth it from the conversations that happen between folks who otherwise might not have met, that endure beyond the event itself"

    "I (and you) have almost certainly benefited from cons we’ve never been to and never heard of."

    brainwane,
    @brainwane@social.coop avatar

    The "Cons are not industry newsletters" part is particularly interesting, as I also think about it through the lens of public professional recognition and public mastery validation, and how culturally discouraged it is in our subculture to say "I am seeking the professional respect of my profession."
